Today. It is starting at 2:30PM EST today and is going to be a Day/Night game!

India vs New Zealand - Final league ODI

India vs New Zealand - at Auckland!

Now, the series enters the final league ODI between India and New Zealand at Auckland. The last ODI between the two sides at Christchurch was a thrilling 1 wcket win for India. Ajay Jadeja shone in that match, scoring a brilliant 95* to win the match for India off the last ball.

Now many things have changed since then. For New Zealand, this ODI is a virtual semifinal. They have to win this to progress to the final or they are out of the tournament. However, the least chance they have for progressing to the final is to ensure they bowl out India within 40 overs and then score at a faster rate to ensure that they are ahead of England in the net run rate needed to enter the final. But all this only if they get the bonus point.

This is going to be a Day/Night game with good warm weather throughout the day. The pitc being offered is a turning track that will take spin throughout the day, especially more so in the night. So the team that wins the toss will most probably have a bat first and then let the second batting team play on a turner in the night with the ball stopping at a few places of pitching.

Regarding the Indian XI, Ajit Agarkar is being dropped from the XI as is being replaced by Murali Kartik. Agarkar has endured a very poor series and he gave away 49 runs off 4 overs in the previous match. New Zealnd go in with the same team that beat England in the previous match at this same ground.

So, all eyes on this game which is a semifinal of sorts for New Zealand. For India, its a game which they need to win to keep up their confidence going into the final!

New Zealand elect to bat first!

New Zealand elect to bat first!

The match between India and New Zealand officially starts. Lets get down to the pitch report with Martin Crowe, former New Zealand player and a part of the commentary team for this series.

Martin Crowe: The pitch looks a good batting track to start with but will take enormous amount of spin as the match progresses. It will become increasingly difficult for the batsmen to counter the spin as the match progresses. My take - the team that wins the toss should bat first or should gear up for a hard time during the night of the match!

R.Shastri: Thats a good sign for the spinners who have not had much success in this series so far. Lets get down to the toss with the two captains.

Rahul Dravid tosses the coin, Fleming calls Tails and Tails it is! Fleming wins the toss.

M.Crowe: Your call Fleming:
Fleming: We would have a bat first. A good wicket for the spinners in the night. We would like to take advantage of that

M.Crowe: An important game for you to enter the final. Your team?
Fleming: Yes of course. All depends on the result today. We are going in with the same team that won against England.

M.Crowe: Disappointed with the toss Rahul?
Dravid: No. We would be happy with either decisions. We are better players of spin than many other teams

M.Crowe: Any changes in your team?
Dravid: Murali Kartik comes in for Ajit Agarkar.

M.Crowe: Thanks Rahul. So gentlemen, New Zealand are going to bat first!

New Zealand start off in a commanding fashion!

Astle kick starts New Zealand's innings with a half century!
Nathan Astle 52* (55)
S.Fleming 25 (28)

Nathan Astle has kickstarted the New Zealand innings with a very fine half century. New Zealand ave progressed to 80/1 after 15 overs at over 5.5 per over. Some very aggressive hitting from Astle after the 5th over saw the New Zealand run rate zoom from a paltry 4 runs per over to over 6 runs per over.

Fleming, who also started off slowly gradually built up momentum and cracked a few boundaries along the way. Just when the Indian bowlers started dropping shoulders, Kumble bowled a wonderful slow googly that surprised Fleming and induced a mistimed shot and was caught at mid off.

Styris has now joined Astle who aggressive batting is causing too many problems for the Indian bowlers. The Indian bowlers havent been too good today with Nehra being the most expensive among the bowlers. Kumble was introduced as soon as the 8th over into the attack which sums up the day for the Indian bowlers so far.

Hopefully New Zealand will be able to build on the good start that Astle has provided.
