New Zealand will be very disappointed, unless they reach a score of 250 in these final 4 overs.

Its the final 3 overs as its a 49 over game due to various reasons (Day/Night game can be a 49 over affair only on C2004!)!

New Zealand on top - Set India a target of 263 to win!

NATHAN ASTLE 120 - INDIA REQUIRE 263 TO WIN!

Riding on a superb scintillating century from Nathan Astle, New Zealand has set India a target of 263 to win this final match. Astle has been the chief destroyer for India by scoring a stunning 120 before he was out in the final over to Anil Kumble who picked up 3 wickets in the end.

Chris Harris stepped up the aggression in the final overs to take New Zealand past the 250 mark. Astle and Harris hit superb lofted shots in the final overs to dent India's confidence more on the field. Astle was out in the final over caught at the long off boundary. Mc Mullum and Harris then took New Zealand to 262/5. The Indian bowlers barring Sehwag and Kumble suffered at the hands of Astle and co. Sehwag had the most economical figures of 2/27 (9 overs) whearas Kumble had the best figures of 3/52 (9 overs) though a trifle expensive.

Astle's knock was interspersed with fine hits to the fence. A surprising thing is that, we saw no sixes today from the blade of the New Zealand batsmen. Yet, they have set a very challenging total for India on a breaking pitch which has already started taking spin going by Kumble's turning deliveries.

India now require 263 to win this match. Since they have already reached the final, they should not be too concerned for the total but they know that a defeat here will allow New Zealand into the final with a psychological lead over India due to the fact that they would have beaten India and entered the final! So India need to win this game to avoid that psychological lead and instead take on England in the final. England seems a better option for India to face off in the final!

Also as mentioned in the picture above, New Zealand needs to beat India and get the 4 points for entering the final because their net run rate is below that of England and even if they bowl India out within the 40th over, they will exit the tournament. So only chance for New Zealand is to beat India or exit the tournament!

sai i think NZ are short by another 25 runs, India can chase with their famed batting line up

I think anything above 260 is a tough total for India to chase. here on NZ wickets, high scores are not possible and with the wicket taking more turn in the night, it would be increasingly diffcicult

India make a lightning start - 31/0

Sehwag & Tendulkar make electrifying start - 31/0
India 31/0 - 5 overs
V.Sehwag 16 (14)
S.Tendulkar 13 (16)

A blistering start provided by Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar has sped India off the tracks. India who needed 263 runs to win this match and go into the final with prime confidence, have started off in imperious fashion. Sehwag in particular looks in the same dashin form that has instilled fear in the minds of bowlers worldwide. His sweep shots today have fetched maximum runs. Three sweep shots for three fours. The English crowd have now joined the Indian crowd in cheering every Indian run. After all, they know that the fate of England in this tournament totally depends on an Indian victory today!

Sachin Tendulkar, who started off in a scratchy manner not scoring a run for the first 10 balls then took off in a big way, hitting three consecutive fours off Jacob Oram in an over. The first four was a lofted straight drive that just missed Mc Millan and long off. The second four was a beautiful cover drive to the boundary which reminded one of the Tendulkar of the old. The third shot was the peak - a superb sweep to mid wicket boundary that had no one chasing!

A superb start by India. New Zealand havent bowled too badly. The Indian openers are taking full toll. New Zealand might introduce their spinners early to put the brakes on the Indian scoring which can be an effective way for NZ to pick up wickets! An engrossing game ahead!

Astle Played a super innings though he takes a long time to get it!, never the less, reasonable score!, but a good start again by INDIA, they will click the total in time i assume...

GREAT CRICKET - INDIA SLIGHTLY AHEAD!

SEHWAG SLAMS 50 OF 47 BALLS! NEW ZEALAND FIGHT BACK!
Virender Sehwag 50* (47)
M.Kaif 5*
D.Vettori 1/7 (3)

If one wants to watch cricket at its best, then log in to this current India - New Zealand match going on at Auckland. This is what cricket is all about - a team fighting to enter the final, the other team not wanting to lose in order to maintain their supremacy over the rest in the tournament. At the 15 over stage, it can be said that India hold the slight edge due to the rate at which they have scored their runs. Sehwag has slammed his 50 off just 47 balls and is looking dangerous for another big score!

But but but, New Zealand have fought back with two quick wickets courtesy Daniel Vettori and Paul Wiseman. First to go was Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar had just swept Vettori for an imperious four to mid wicket. Vettori bowled a flighted delivery straight on the stumps to Tendulkar. Tendulkar getting overconfident, stepped out of his wicket to smash Vettori out of the ground but missed the ball completely and Mc Mullum behind the stumps did the rest. Tendulkar was out for 31.

Next to go was Yuvraj Singh for a duck!! Yuvraj Singh played a short spinning ball from Vettori on the backfoot towards mid off and took off for a non existent single. Paul Wiseman at mid off scooped on the ball and effected a lightning throw to Vettori with Yuvraj short of his ground by miles. Yuvraj was gone for nought and New Zealand celebrated. India were 62/2 and in trouble!

Next to come in was Kaif. Kaif started off well with a backfoot straight drive for a four. But still India were lagging behind the required run rate after the completion of the 14th over with only 69/2. But Sehwag had new ideas. He then took over in the 15th over and completely smashed Shane Bond out of the attack to surge India ahead of the required run rate. The 15th over by Shane Bond read: 0,4,4,4,4,4 . First ball was a dot ball. The next 5 balls were utterly smashed by Sehwag for five consecutive fours. First ball, it was a superb cover drive for a four. The next ball, Sehwag came down the wicket and lofted Bond straight for a four.

The fourth ball off the over was flicked through square leg for a boundary. The fifth ball was lofted to fine leg for a four and the sixth ball was a gorgeous straight drive that would have left even Sachin Tendulkar, the master of straight drives, proud!!

India right now are ahead on the required run rate but New Zealand have picked up 2 important wickets of Sachin and Yuvraj. If New Zealand can put the brakes on Sehwag and India, they stand a chance of picking up more wickets! This should prove and enthralling contest from now on with the battle between bat and ball!
