West Indian Tour of India, 2013: Sachin's 200th Test Appearance

Why did Dravid never get the farewell that Sachin is getting btw? BCCI basically created a series for Sachin so why not Dravid.

Dravid and Laxman announced their retirement after playing their last test match. Ganguly and Tendulkar did announce their retirement before they had played their last test match. This can be one point. Another point is what i feel is Sachin is considered as a league above Dravids, Laxmans and Gangulys. I personally love Dravid more than Tendulkar in all aspects but this is it and we need to take it this way. Sachin is Sachin.

So as soon as Ojha gets some bounce, he immediately makes an impact. It is wonderful to see him doing well. A good day overall for India. Probably would have liked to see openers batting for a bit longer but can't complain as we got Sachin at the crease. Looks like he will bat only once in this test match again. I hope he continues the form that he showed today.

India v West Indies 2013-14 : Injured Kulkarni out of WI ODIs, Vinay Kumar called up | Cricket News | India v West Indies | ESPN Cricinfo

OMG! Why are they keep going back to Vinay Kumar? There are other bowlers who are better ODI bowlers than Vinay Kumar.

hmmm,I find this series a bit icky, a lot of the reasons are covered in that article War posted, but anyway... I didn't follow the setup of this series a few months ago so I have a question.

was this really setup as a goodbye series, as in, tendulkar indicated he wouldn't go to SAF so this series was hastily arranged.

Or was it set up as a "you're not going to SAF but we don't want to drop you, so here is a series, gift wrapped with bow, you can hit 200 tests and play in front of the mumbai crowd, it would be a perfect time to retire, don't you think? *nudge* *nudge* *wink* *wink*"

just wondering if it really is this big honourable goodbye or it was to get the BCCI out of a sticky situation.

This, StinkyBoHoon.

doesn't that make it even worse? there's still all the problems of the BCCI over-stating their power and the west indies surrendering to a pay cheque to be whipping boys but it's not even really a nice send off (which, had it been arranged properly, I'd have no problems with, tendulkar does deserve something like this, he's the biggest player in the game) it's a series that has been constructed, with some abuse of power, in order to push someone out the door without being unpopular.

Dravid and Laxman didn't wait for their farewell. We had the 2-test series against NZ at home where both of them could have signed off. Dravid chose to exit after the failure in Australia, and Laxman decided to quit just before he was offered a farewell home series vs NZ (well this is what the theory has been floating around for long that Laxman was hurt when he was asked to use the NZ home series as farewell, so he jumped into retirement).

There is no partiality there. Ganguly and Kumble were accorded similar grand farewells. Tendulkar's farewell is expected to look this grand because of the stature that he has in the cricketing world.

A fairytale ending in the offing? Hope so... Wont be disappointed if it happens, but want to watch the highlights of Day 1 (since couldn't watch it live). Seems like he played that classic straight drive. Want to watch that again! From here on, will be living on YouTube videos of such shots.:(:noway

Tendulkar is being considered too highly by some. The fact remains that fans of Dravid, VVS will feel let down cause of the farewell preparations in place for SRT.

What we also need to understand is that SRT gets a longer rope than the others-something that has not gone down too well with me. Spineless selectors have been unable to drop him when he was woefully out of touch. But rules seem to change when you consider the likes of Dravid, VVS, Ganguly & Sehwag.

Even the players you mentioned whose fans will feel let down, consider Tendulkar too highly. SRT has gotten that longer rope because he deserved it. Even when he was out of form, he kept showing glimpses that he would return to form anytime soon. For example in that recent disastrous Australia tour, he kept batting very positively and got all nice and neat cameos without going to get the big one. SRT fans can also say that SRT has been treated unfairly in the aspect that any non-big score (read hundreds) by SRT is generally looked down upon as failures. Only if SRT scores a hundred is it considered a success. If not, its a failure by most's standards

Dravid, VVS didn't choose to have farewell games. They left before they could be accorded one. Its their choice and it should be respected. But their fans can't feel let down because their heroes choose what they did.

So Sachin was never out of form?

He was out of form till last test match since we won the world cup. Let see what happens tomorrow. Dravid and Laxman managed to retire from test cricket after they faced a worst form. But Sachin didn't do like Dravid and VVS did and we all don't know why he done so. Maybe Sachin was there to build up his 4th place before getting retired and he may have been got it as Rohit or Rahane or any other else. We all don't know what Sachin thinks, what happens behind the doors and what is going to happen in future. But anyway Sachin is out of form now. If he will manage to score ton tomorrow then it will be a finish like a boss nor it will be the worst end like Dravid and Punter had. :(

This. :yes

I think you might have smashed the nail on the head with this on SBK, i never really thought of it so deep. And while we or payed journalist might never get the BCCI to admit it, this is likely the real truth.

All the players who bear their team on their shoulders are legends without a doubt, not sure why we want to see a split and assume the way they departed from the sport.

Did we even know Bevan's farewell though he is the common name being still referred for being a match winner in any country? To me personally, Tendulkar or Dravid or Sourav or Laxman or Kumble, all already are in hearts of millions across the globe for their own contributions. Just because one announced the departure in advance, doesn't bring that person to the top over the person departed all of a sudden with no prior announcement. Everyone equally deserved/given respect & a strong SALUTE for the contributions!

There can be never another Sachin, like wise there can be never another Dravid or Laxman or Kumble or Sourav or Lara or Ponting! They are stand-alone classys in their own era in my view.

I do love Sachin and accept that he is one of the greatest ever cricketer! But i don't really want to buy stories that say if Sachin scores anything below 100 it is failure and Sachin has never been out of form etc.. C'mon lets be practical.

And in general it can't be told that fans think so because i know a lot of people who don't say such amusing stuffs.

It is not 'It is failure'. It has been looked upon as failure by most of Sachin's fans just because they were so much fan of him and there is nothing wrong in it.

Me being a Sachin's fan since 1995, I always greedily expected 100 from every innings he batted and every innings I watched. That doesn't mean that there is a serious flaw in my expectation, as being a biggest fan of someone will make that person to go above & beyond in terms of expectations. There were numerous occassions where I just threw my TV remote just because Sachin got dismissed cheaply, Yes to me it is a failure but that doesn't imply that his failure has brought the world to an end.

In other words, in fans world - be it a movie or sport or software or anything, there is no boundary for expectations. People who doesn't prefer to be a fan are very much welcomed to stay away from it than spotting the other that it's wrong to look upon in so & so way. People who don't prefer to see others as someone's fan, are welcomed to just go past it instead of standing by & spotting - 'hey you know what? Going crazy behind a so & so isn't just an amazing story'.

Only if SRT scores a hundred [in a winning cause, batting second, on a non-subcontient wicket, against a non-minnow, in the Final of a tournament] is it considered a success. If not, its a failure by most's standards.

Fixed it for you .. :P

Actually this applies only to internet folks from my experience .. off the web, people around me either love the man or like him a lot. A few criticisms here and there, but there is always a huge amount of respect for what he has achieved.
