West Indies in England 2009

Im impressed with the selections trying some of the top county performers, first time in a while that I haven't had any major qualms with the squad.

Onions certainly proving himself to the selectors at the moment 20-5

On a dreadfully flat road at Taunton as well. Durham made 543 in the first innings, and now Somerset are 54/7. 5/20 for Onions from 9 overs is a heck of an effort, a wicket each for Harmison and Thorp as well, really good performance from Durham so far!

I tell ya what, this Chris Woakes lad is really starting to make an impression on the game!. He's playing for the England Lions today, and already has a wicket, getting Lendl Simmons out for 4, and going for only 1 off his first over. He's definitely going to be one for the future, certainly more so than Saj Mahmood ffs. Woakes actually gets guys out, and good batsmen as well.

Very impressed with the selectors. Bresnan has been picked :D. Very good news there, he can bowl and bat very well. So he's capable in both departments. Onions has been impressive recently so that's a good selection too. Shame that Shah was dropped but it had to happen unfortunately.

Shah did himself no favours by warming an IPL bench rather than making merry with Strauss, Hughes & co. Bopara is the most deserving at No. 3 atm imo.

I have to say that the WI should have included Rampaul in the test squad. I understand the reason behind including a all-rounder like Bernard but his domestic record is nothing impressive. Rampaul missed a good number of 1st class games but he still finished as one of the leading wicket takers in this years season.

I wouldnt mine a pace attack of Edwards, Taylor and Rampaul.

Woakes with six, who is this guy. Cricinfo just says he is a Right-arm medium bowler. How fast is he.

Not sure how quick he is, probably operates at about 135k's I'd imagine. The big thing with Woakes is, that he's getting top batsmen out. Did a job on Justin Langer earlier in the season, and looks a real talent. Certainly one to look out for.

ODi squad for this series also announced today. Morgan's included, Foster drops out with Prior keeping, Sidebottom's in the squad, Strauss returns as captain, Bell's in the squad and Tim Bresnan is also included. Abit annoyed that Sidebottom and Prior are in, as I don't think they're good enough, but no real complaints. Good to see Eion Morgan getting picked!

Squad: Andrew Strauss (capt), Ravi Bopara, Ian Bell, Owais Shah, Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood, Eoin Morgan, Matt Prior, Dimitri Mascarenhas, Tim Bresnan, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, Ryan Sidebottom, James Anderson

Morgan? Irish openner? I remember him. Wouldn't suprise me if Neil O Brien and Rankin get picked in the near future. Rankin's a real talent. I'm suprised England aren't all over him yet. I like these new names. Bit dissapointed Key didnt get a go. I've seen Onions once or twice and he seems a good hit the deck type bowler. Height as well. If he performs against the Windies he may trouble Ponting. Not sure who Bresnan is but he sounds like another Broad. Lol get that Woakes kid in.

Morgan's a middle order batsman.

Niall O'Brien won't get picked, only averages 24 for Kent and 36 for Northants compared with his career boosting average of 81 for Ireland. He's really not good enough. As for Rankin, meh, not good enough either. Averages 17 with the ball for Ireland, but 29 for both Derbyshire and Warwickshire, so there are far better options as far as I'm concerned. Morgan's the only current Irish player good enough to play for England.

Onions isn't really a hit the deck bowler either, he generally bowls quite full, gets abit of movement off the seam and in the air. Can bowl at speeds upwards of 85mph when in good rhythm and when fired up, as proven yesterday when he was fired up against Langer and bowling at over 87mph consistently.

I'd actually rather see Woakes in the Test side ahead of Bresnan as well tbh. Bresnan's a good OD bowler, but has only really had 1 good season in FC cricket. Woakes has only had 1 season himself, but looks a real talent, getting good batsmen out with good deliveries. Bresnan's never really looked more than an average FC bowler. He's better than he was when he last played for England and got destroyed by Jayasuriya, but I'm still not sure he's good enough. Have to wait and see.

Rankin's got a lot of raw talent imo. Could be knocking on the door sooner rather than later.

Bresnan is a pretty talented bowler and batsman. He's done quite well in OD Cricket for Yorkshire and he's starting to impress in FC cricket as well.

I agree with you about Bresnan. OD wise he's done very well for Yorkshire but he needs more time to impress in FC cricket. He's starting to do well though, he's had a good season under his belt and hopefully that does wonders for his confidence. Although I'm quite happy he's been picked as well because I like him a lot.

As for that Woakes. Wow, this guy looks like a serious talent!

He bowls at 80mph which is 130kph. He is definitely medium pace, but he picks up a lot of swing, both ways, from what I have seen.

Is that his top pace Manee or his average? If he can bowl it both ways all he would need is an extra yard of pace and he could be a real handful on the international stage, not that I've seen him bowl.
