Was it a good move to recall Irfan in the Indian squad?

Why would you drop the only bowler who did anything of substance in England? Slap in the face.

I think they have just rested him for this series. I feel he will be back for Australia test.

Squad looks awesome to me. 3 fast bowlers and 3 deserving spinners in the squad. Good to see Rahane coming in with Kohli.

India name an almost full strength squad against a Gayle-less Windies side. Meaning more are prone to injuries prior to the massive tour of Australia. Do the selectors even realize that Dhoni too is human? Really doubt that.

What? Are you serious Haarithan? All are back after injuries. We need to perform and keep the momentum going on before Australia series. Its a good move by selector. Gayle is a factor but he is not God. He had not played in the last series yet West Indies were competitive(although they were back home) Move on from Gayle.

i can bet you dhoni himself want to play... He will be getting rest from ODIs but in test matches he surely want to improve his form and will be looking to test New Fast Bowlers for Aus Tour..

But Why They Chosen Yuvraj, he was flop in last Aus tour.. Rohit Sharma Should have got chance in place of Yuvraj..

Yeah be happy with this squad for all you can. But the last thing I'd wanna hear from you Indian fans during the Australian tour are those silly excuses like 'we fielded a B-team and hence the defeat'.

Good thing they rested Praveen, though I doubt he'd be off any use in Australian conditions. But then, that's what the Aussies said off Jimmy Anderson and look what happened then. ;)

If I were the selector, I'd have rested Tendulkar, Dravid and Dhoni. India showed they could beat the Windies with a B-side even in the Caribbean's backyard. So why not here?

India don't play too many practice matches, so for Sachin, Sehwag, Yuvraj, Ishant, this will be like a Practice Series..

and i have read in one tweet by zaheer khan, that he has started to bowl.. :yes

Praveen Kumar took 10 Wickets in 3 matches in 2008 CB series.. So he will be in TEST squad for sure Against Aussie..

Very good squad. I guess the selectors have lost faith in Amit Mishra, and so the next best bet is Rahul Sharma inspite of him not having played any international games. Anyways, he won't play a test here since Ashwin and Ojha will be the premier spinners. I am worried if the inclusion of Yuvraj Singh is a sign that he is a front runner for Australia. Pujara is bound to be fit for the Australia tour, and if so he should replace Yuvraj Singh for that tour (with Kohli and Rahane retaining their places). And hope Kohli/Rahane get their chances in this series with a few seniors opting to sit out voluntarily. Each senior can play a test or two at the max and rotate among themselves. This is the best chance Kohli/Rahane will get to make a headstart in test cricket. Also will Harbhajan find a place in the side for Australia (a side he loves playing and against whom he has had so much success)? If Ashwin does well here, then nothing wrong in keeping Bhajji out, but Bhajji vs Australia is something to think about.

Make no mistake, Praveen suits for certain conditions and England is a major place where Praveen was bound to do well and he did. He is not going to do well in all conditions with the kind of pace he possesses. He is a big hearted bowler and can toil away for longer periods of time, but we can do better with a bowler who has at least 10 kph more pace than Praveen.

----------

First Test is in Delhi and the New pitch has some more pace and bounce..

For first time in Indian History, Indian Fast Bowling Attack will be about PACE.

A Leg Spinner is must but Picking Leg Spinner for Test Matches on Basis of IPL does not sound good to me..

Quite true. An Indian pace attack which is all about pace, bounce and height is a rarity and the selectors have pulled off one such attack. I would still have a left armer in there, but its time now to try out this combo and see how it works. Ishant is the senior pro here and he will play. It will be a shootout between Yadav and Aaron. Yadav might get the nod over Aaron due to bench seniority, but I would take a punt on Aaron to see how he goes in tests. He is the more exciting of the two, and I would gamble on him.

Regarding Rahul Sharma - you don't have any other backup spinners with great performances in domestic cricket. Maybe Rahul Sharma has done well in domestic cricket (what are his recent domestic stats, I heard somewhere he has been good).

I think Dhoni might rest from the ODI leg. Also this side is just announced for the first test, not the entire series.

He averages 44 with bowl in First Class Cricket.. Dhoni or Duncan Fletcher must have seen something in him otherwise picking a Spinner on basis of IPL Performance for TEST is seriously crazy..

Looks like Hildtich and co have taken over the Indian selection panel :p Spinner averaging over 40 and barely played 10 matches has them written all over it.

M S Dhoni (capt & wk), Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, R Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Virat Kohli, Varun Aaron, Ajinkya Rahane, Rahul Sharma

Mixed feelings.

Good to see Yadav, Kohli, Rahane, Ojha in the squad.
But picking Ishant, VVS, Dravid, Gambhir, MSD, Sharma, Sachin...all stupid, stupid picks.

Overall...stupid squad. Ishant, VVS, Sachin, Dravid, Gambhir, MSD...all have seen so much cricket already and are crucial to our series in Australia. Why have they been picked? What if they get injured? Ishant and MSD are already carrying niggles.

Ojhan and Ashwin are our top two spinners...what's Rahul Sharma doing there? Similarly, Aaron is nowhere ready for Test cricket. They both have hopefully been picked just to gain experience. But given there are only 3 fast bowlers in the squad, Aaron might play. Which is just BAAAAAAD foresight. RP Singh was picked for the England tour, played, did alright for a guy horribly out of shape and form, then played some Challenger trophy games...if he's still in the picture, then why isn't he on this tour? You pick him out of nowhere to play a couple of crucial tests, and then when he finally has some match practice behind him you drop him? And where's Munaf? Or Vinay Kumar? Aaron as third seamer over all those guys? SERIOUSLY?

And somehow Yuvraj has wormed his way back in. Why?

Baaad selections.

Sad to see Abhinav Mukund was not picked, he did OK considering he was playing against a WI and ENG bowling attack who were quite capable of taking 20 wickets on their home conditions. IMO, he should have been persisted with in home test series against WI.
While taking nothing away from Rahane, who is a good find for India and has shown good promise in ODIs and T20s..with international schedule being so jam packed for India, I guess team management should think about separate set of openers/reserve openers for tests and ODI/T20.

Good chance for young bowlers to make an impression..but I wonder why Praveen Kumar can't find a place in squad announced for 1st test. He was a late-entrant in Indian test arena and has since done very well in WI and ENG. May be selectors could have rested him for ODIs, but why cut a promising test career short ? We have seen how he did in WI and ENG,this home tests against WI could have shown how PK does on docile Indian pitches, where there is no help for fast bowlers.

Eagerly waiting to see Pujara in whites for India, this guy is born to play test cricket and with Australia series looming large, needs to given every opportunity to be battle-ready.

Pujara is not completely ready yet. He is going to play a few domestic games to prove match fitness and should be available for selection for Australia, and I DO SERIOUSLY HOPE HE IS SELECTED! If at all a player needs to be groomed for tests and to replace one of the big three, its Pujara (then Kohli, then Rahane, then Rohit Sharma)

The only player deserving rest was Dhoni but given his lack of form in tests he needs to play this series to get back in form in tests as well. Good to see selectors picking a full strength squad, we saw how even after resting from WI tour, our players got injured in the England tour. If anything this series might help them get much needed match practice.

Rahul Sharma's selection is bizarre given Mishra was looking good in WI and just had a bad tour in England like every other Indian player, he should've been persisted with imo.

+1 to the suggestion
