3rd Test: England v Australia at Old Trafford Aug 1-5, 2013

this owuld have ben a great days play if it wasn't for the ridiculous umpiring, seriously this series has been horrible. WHAT'S HAPPENING ?

Ah - it looks as though the Third bloody Umpire has been at it again today! And naturally, it's England on the wrong end - again.

The umpires haven't been good enough in this series. Khawaja didn't get anywhere near it, and Smith was dead LBW. Though I thought the 'edge' that was given not out on review was fair enough.

Aussie grit today from Clarke and Smith. Smith doesn't have me convinced as a test player, but boy he fights it out. At least, he contributes in some way, though he was fortunate today. The pitch looks quite flat. You know it's a good batting wicket when Jimmy Anderson's not got wickets and going at 3.5.

Just hope the Aussies bat all of tomorrow and wear those poms out.

I think a better solution is to define "inconclusive". What the hell is that? It would make sense only, if the pictures were not clear enough to be that.

Just saw the Broad LBW and as the saying goes what goes around comes around.

You're being sarcastic right? Sorry I can't tell..

I watched the Khawaja one on the highlights and just wow. :facepalm

I thought an LBW we didn't get was hitting, so did dorkeye but the system application is so faulty they're giving "umpires call" which is a kop out. How can you have 'technology' show it is hitting then say it isn't hitting enough............?!?!?!?! :facepalm It either is or it isn't, and had the umpire given it out then the appeal would have failed with exactly the same evidence.

Anyway, while much murmuring has gone on about a whitewash, the inevitable good day for the aussies has come upon us. I've long maintained Bresnan and Broad a) don't offer enough different from each other and Anderson and b) shouldn't open the bowling. I'm not blaming them for this, but I think our bowling attack should have included either Finn or Tremlett.

What Broad and Bresnan add with the bat isn't going to help much if we're light on wickets and variety and something different should have helped on a pitch like this. England are worldbeaters when everything goes their way, they're on pitches that they can score quickly on, or the ball swings and/or the opposition batsmen oblige. Bit of hard work and it's the 90s all over again.

The aussies will want to pile on the misery, should really be looking at 450+ . No point blaming DRS for this particular 'mess'. I see C5 made a meal of Clarke making 100 batting four, one swallow does not equal a summer and by the law of averages a top batsman like him was bound to make a score batting in a position he's got a poor record in.

Good to see Rogers make a score, he'll be disappointed not to have gone on, but this Test could have proven 'make or break' for him. Whether the aussies will be able to cut through England is another matter, they will just have to try and post 500-600 if they can and put pressure on England.

England will find it hard to get the aussies out for much less than 400, then force a lead to keep up a whitewash possibility. If both sides haven't completed their 1st innings by the end of day three, I reckon it will be hard for England to win.

Why did that ugly 5ft inbred looking player review that CLEAR nick? way to waste a review rofl

Smith AND Warner gone, why he reviewed it what was he thinking

That is what you call a waste of a review.:facepalm
Seriously, he didn't know:eek:

This is one reason why player driven reviews stink. You're supposed to realise in that instant, 'ah of course, i know i hit my pad, but that other sensation i felt was ball on bat' Yeah right... Not every player will be a good judge of whether they've nicked it, not everyone has that 'skill'. And it's a skill that has nothing to do with cricket.

Haddin has come out with some aggression here. I think Australia have been a little bit reckless this morning eg. Clarke driving airily , Smith holing out, but if Haddin can do it right I'll feel a bit better.

DRS needs to stay player review, if a player is too stupid t orealise when he's hit the ball, that's entirely his own fault and not to be rude to Warner, lack of intellect. I remember playing school boy cricket and knowing when I edged the ball every single time.

And agreed, Haddin is playing a solid rear end knock, great century by Clarke and an overall better batting performance by the Aussies!

There has been some solid batting by Australia in this test match. It is important to make the most of batting first on a flat pitch, that will take spin latter on. Haddin and Starc combined well to get Australia's score past 500. Starc is very handy with the bat.

I would declare straight away after tea. I don't think there is too much more to gain by keeping on batting. I would have the full last session of today bowling at England. The England batsman will put up a fight so the Australia bowlers will need some time to get them out. That way if things go to plan, Australia can pick some wickets up before the days end and start again tomorrow.
