A first look at patch 2! [new video on page 29]

I think the main issue with caught + bowled isn't whether they catch or drop it or not - but that they get their hands to it and stop it without fail. In real life a large majority of the balls smashed at the bowler go straight through without a touch (or only a tiny deflection without loss of speed).
They still stop a lot more balls than they should, likewise with mid-on/off.

MattW, the big question I suppose would be: would you, as the bowling captain choose to have slips? Do they actually help you against the opposition, at least in long formats, or would it still be more effective to just have a ring field and wait for silly shots?

No, they don't come in to play enough. It's improved in the patch, which means not having one in place will occasionally cost you a wicket - but it doesn't happen nearly as often as it does to accept the frustration of leaking runs.

I did have a good run fairly early on with the patch that would have made me say yes, but playing longer I just couldn't justify it in the long run.

The exception is if you're on a pitch that has some big cracks and you can hit those, you'll get good edges off the deviations - so put a slip in place on that kind of pitch with fast bowlers.

I wouldn't call it waiting 'for silly shots' - wickets in the outfield don't feel nearly as cheap as they used to, but yeah, that's probably still the tactic.

A bit annoying then. Part of me would still be tempted to put in slips for realism sakes. It'd also be an artificial way of making the AI batting stronger, since you'd be effectively reducing your amount of fielders. That still means you're not trying your best to win though, for the sake of realism.

Related questions in that case...

1. When you get an AI batsman out, do you feel as if you earned the wkt or taking wkts seems random?

2. Do bowling plans work against AI or is it a case of putting ring around the AI batsmen and hoping they will hit a ball up in the air sooner or later?

without the patch i myself have felt and seen my bowling plan work. I look at the AI batsman who is in at the time and it said his weakness was back foot so i places fields for the short ball so i bowled short and slow and bang caught by one of the fielders i placed

How do you view the strength & weakness of bowlers/batsmen? By pressing R3 (Right Stick down)?

Yeah. I certainly feel like I earn wickets - even on pro.

I think everyone once they get the patch will go through a spell of absolutely nothing working for them, it took me a bit of adjusting to start getting it right again, your tactics might need to change because the AI doesn't just give up their wicket as easily.

Well I certainly bowl with a plan in mind and occasionally it works. Pre-patch I used to occasionally just give up, and start trying crappy deliveries and hoping that a bad ball will draw a bad shot - I don't find myself doing that anywhere near as much, and when I do it usually backfires.

I really enjoyed the match I'm currently uploading (120 minutes remaining) - while obviously there's the gap over how I experienced it with what I was doing with the controls and what it just looks like watching - I think it generally demonstrates plans working and failing, wickets that were earnt and punishment for when I was shit.

For the random match I played just hoping to upload something to calm down all the begging for more videos - I couldn't have asked for a better match.

MattW would you say the AI is better at match situations now with patch 2? Last thing I want is rolling teams out for less then 50 in a T20 or less then 100 in a ODI.

What difficulty do you play on? That's not so much a match situation thing as you need to go up a level.

Im playing on pro difficulty

This sounds quite promising. As long as the AI is competitive, it will enhance offline mode's longevity and other things such as realistic edges (number as well as variety) or scenario editor can be addressed in a future iteration of the game (hopefully DBC 15).

Move up a level and see if you get challenging games from AI.
