Story A Managers Journey to the top - Notts Fall To Heavy Defeat Against Yorkshire

You had to be kidding me.

Haha, I know right! You got 3 overs luckily and (:hpraise) Swann is in some great form there.

Another good read, good work Hedger.

I was expecting at least 15 over's for the last 2 sessions even though it was very likely to rain. Anyway, the last over before lunch was probably the winning over as Swann took 2 wickets in that over.

I just read few episodes (the last two) as I din't read them previously.
Great effort and I say that this is likely SOTM for January 2010..
First one to win in the new decade:hpraise

You smashed up Lancashire... (my favourite team :p)
Swann was excellent with the ball, as pretty much their whole batting line-up crumbled.
Broad got a hiding in the second innings.
Sidebottom was a deserving man of the match, for his all-round performance.

Thanks. I think I have a better chance than last time. The only time I had been involved in SOTM was with my IPL diary once which I was unlucky to come first but just_cricket's story beat me by 1 or 2 votes then.

Nottinghamshire vs Ireland CC 1st Innings

Squads_NOT_v_IRE.jpg

With Swann, Sidebottom and Broad all away on international duty, I would have to play some younger bowlers. I ended up going with Pattinson, Lawson and Adams as the 3 pace bowlers and Brown as the spinner and just play another batsman so we would use Patel and Voges as part time bowlers. The batsman we put into the side was Ali Brown who in his 3 2nd Team innings had scored 46*, 166 and 139. Bilal Shafayat was also brought into the side for the out of form, Jefferson. We would have liked to continue with another win in the Challenge Trophy but we would have to work for that result. Ireland CC won the toss and elected to bat first. There was not much in it for the bowlers so we would have to work very hard to restrict them to under 250.

Andre Adams opened the bowling to bowl at Bray and Strydom, the 2 opening batsman. Adams conceded 4 runs in his first over. Pattinson opened the bowling from the other end. He bowled a maiden first up which was good. We couldn't take a wicket in the first ten over's, but we kept it reasonably tight, only conceding 42 runs from it. Adams had gone at 3.6 an over while Pattinson had gone at 4.8. Lawson was brought on in the 12th over to replace Pattinson. Brown was also brought on a few over's later in hope to take a wicket. Lawson and Brown bowled well, not conceding too many runs before Klokker stumped Strydom for 43 off the bowling of Jason Brown. It was now 80/1 off 18.2 over's. Lawson bowled 5 over's before being taken off, replaced by Samit Patel. Patel proved a good change as O'Brien got out for 20. Brown had bowled 7 over's, 1/32 before being taken off for Voges to have a bowl. Patel struck again, getting the wicket of Botha, caught behind for 10 and after 30 over's, they were 125/3, Bray leading the way on 45* off 92 balls.

Bray finally brought up his 50 off 110 balls. All bowlers had bowled well, going at less than 5 an over, Patel pick of the bowlers so far with 2/16 from 7 over's. Voges took himself off after bowling 5 over's and getting hit around in his last over and giving the ball to Jason Brown again. Patel took a wicket with his last ball, Bray just hitting one straight back at him for a caught and bowled and he was out for 66 off 124 balls. Patel finished with figures of 3/35 off his 10 over's.

The final powerplay was taken with 9 over's to go and Pattinson was handed the ball back. Voges dropped White off the bowling of Adams at second slip and White had moved onto 50. Ireland CC's run rate had now risen to nearly 5 an over and they would be heading for 250-260 with 5 over's to go. White finally got out for 60 off 50 balls, popping one up for Voges at short leg off the bowling of Brown who was into his 10th over. Brown finished with 2/56 from his 10 over's. Klokker took a brilliant catch behind the stumps, Poynter edging down the legside where Klokker dived to his left and took the catch and the batsman couldn't believe it. Lawson had taken his first wicket and he was into his 7th over. Johnston lasted 4 balls before edging to Voges at second slip off Lawson and it was 232/7. Adams came in to bowl his last over, unlucky not to have a wicket before that, having a dropped catch off his bowling, another catchable shot, 2 near misses and 1 LBW appeal. McCallan hit Adams for a six before being trapped in front next ball for 8. Revenge can be sweet. Adams was unlucky again, having 2 close LBW appeals in the next 2 balls and finding the edge on the last ball of the over. He finished with 1/50 from his 10 over's but deserved better. Lawson bowled the last over and conceded 5 runs off it, Ireland CC finishing with 244/8 from their fifty over's.

Bray and White both made half centuries. I was reasonably happy with the bowling, especially with Samit Patel who bowled superbly. Brown and Adams were also very good with the ball, Brown taking 2 wickets and Adams taking 1 but deserved more. I would be looking to chase this down if we can build a few good partnerships and lower the RRR as we go.

Pretty good effort there, to keep them under 250.
Lol at Bray's snail paced innings, why wouldn't you just retire if you were going that slow...
You have a lot of depth in you batting line-up, so you should probably win.

Nice, a competitive total there, can't wait for the chase. Would be a remarkable win if you can pull it off considering the personnel you have missing.

Just because I'm crap and I need Broad and Sidebottom to put on a 200 run partnership, it doesn't mean that I will lose since I am not missing any specialist batsman. I'm only missing my bowlers so my batting won't lose very much at all.

Nottinghamshire vs Ireland CC 2nd Innings

We should have been able to chase down this total. The pitch was still very good for batting and I don't think it would get much worse later in the innings. Hales and Shafayat were opening the batting facing Langford-Smith who was opening the bowling.

Shafayat hit the second ball of the innings for a boundary but Hales was dismissed next over for a duck, caught at second slip off Botha. Shafayat only made 5 and we weren't doing too well at 6/2 off 4.4 over's. Patel started to get going, and went to 16 including a huge six over point. Patel and Voges had got a partnership going and it was 63/2 off 15 over's. Patel brought up a well made 50 off 61 balls. We used the second powerplay in the 29th over with Voges and Patel still at the crease. Patel was forcing the pace while Voges was going slowly with 39 off 83 balls. It went bad though when Samit Patel got out for 63 off 81 balls. It was nearly all over when Voges was trapped in front by Johnston for 46. Brown went for 1 and we now needed 118 runs @ 7.3 an over to win the match. We lost Klokker early in his innings but despite a good partnership between Wagh and Adams, we still fell 60 runs short of the target, finishing 184/9 from our 50 over's.

Besides Patel and Voges you showed little resistance.
Your openers didn't do enough, and neither did your middle to lower order.
Like Binnu said, good luck for your next match.

Ouch, your key men didn't take charge in the chase. Would have expected more from Voges.

Worcestershire vs Nottinghamshire 1st Innings

Squads_WOR_v_NOT.jpg

I was disappointed with our batting effort in the previous match but I decided to only make 1 change, Wood in for Hales who got a duck in the last match. No changes were made in the bowling department. Voges won the toss and had a bat. The pitch was good for batting although the outfield was slow so there could be some aerial shots during the match.

Shafayat and Wood made their way to the middle to face Imran Arif to start off with. We batted the first over well, scoring 7 off it, Wood hitting a four going over the top of cover point for a 1 bounce four. We had got off to a good start, being 25/0 after 6 over's. Shafayat was going slowly on 11* off 26 while Hales was going a lot quicker with 14* off 10 balls. Wood continued to shine with his first six, a wonderful lofted on drive, clearing the long on boundary and then hit another boundary next ball. The fifty was brought up in 8.3 over's which was pretty good and after 10 over's, we were 60 without loss, Shafayat on 16* off 33 and Wood on 42* off 28 balls.

Shafayat was trapped in front next over, out for 17 and Arif had his first wicket. Wood brought up his fifty off only 32 balls. The second powerplay was up and it was 87/1 after 15 over's, Wood on 58* and Patel on 9*. Patel also hit his first six of the innings, with a nice lofted square drive over point which took Patel into the 20's. Wood moved onto 80* off only 61 balls. We took the powerplay now while Wood was still in and on fire and Patel was now well settled on 25* at a run a ball. Wood brought up his century during the powerplay, coming off only 75 balls. A wonderful effort from the opener. There was still a chance for him to score a double century with still 26 over's left in the innings. 45 runs were made in the 5 over's of the Powerplay which was very good for us. We were definately looking for 300+ here today, especially if Wood stayed in.

Patel brought up his fifty off 46 balls which was a nice strike rate as well with Wood on 108*, the score 180/1. Patel got out for 56, caught at short leg off Arif who took his second wicket. Voges brought up the 200 for the team with 2 consecutive boundaries, and he moved onto 8* off 4 balls. 200 runs coming from only 30 over's. We were easily heading for 300 at this rate. It was not good putting Wood down on 119 because he was going along very well and could easily make 150+ if he kept going. Voges raced away to fifty, coming off only 43 balls. After 40 over's, we were 267/2, Wood still not out on 138. Wood brought up his 150 with consecutive boundaries and we moved on to 281 off 41 over's. Voges was caught behind for 58 off Ali but he had already done enough damage with the bat.

That brought Wagh to the crease. We had brought up the 300 and Wood was still not giving up on his 200, slogging to move onto 165*. 7 over's left for him to score 35 runs. Wagh was dismissed without scoring but it didn't mean much to us as Wood was doing the hitting. Ali Brown hit his first ball for 6 which Batty didn't like one bit. Wood was definately looking for 200 as he hit his second six in the space of 2 overs and he now had 3 in the innings. Wood moved onto 195*. 3 over's left in the innings so he would definately get it if he didn't get out. The 350 was brought up and Wood had scored his double century, coming off only 138 balls. The rest of the team applauded him from the pavilion. We finished the innings with a massive 373/4, Wood finishing with 208* and Brown hitting a quickfire 28* off only 18 balls with the bat. We were looking for an easy win here.
