Story A Managers Journey to the top - Notts Fall To Heavy Defeat Against Yorkshire

Nottinghamshire vs Worcestershire 1st Innings

Squads_NOT_v_WOR.jpg

Well again, we were without our star bowlers for the One Day match against Worcestershire. Swann was in some great form and it would be good to have him back. He was in good form after getting Man Of The Match in the first test against the West Indies for scoring 61 and taking 5/47 and 3/106. We made no changes to the side that beat Somerset in the FC match, earlier in the week. Only 1 change was made to their side who played us in our last Challenge Trophy match, Kervezee in for Ali. They won the toss and elected to bat and as conditions were good for batting, we had to bowl well.

Adams and Pattinson shared the new ball. The first few overs were good and Pattinson got his reward, bowling Moore out for 2, the score 8/1 after 4 over's. Klokker dropped Smith off Adams when he got a faint edge through to the keeper but Adams struck in the same over, getting Solanki trapped in front for 5. What a great start, having them 9/2 after 5 over's.

After scoring 5 from the next over, the bowlers put on 3 straight maidens which put the batsman under pressure and caused a streaky shot from Mitchell, miscueing the shot over mid on for 4. 20/2 after 10 over's and the powerplay was taken straight away.

Andre Adams was taken off after bowling 7 over's, 4 maidens, 1/6 and Lawson was given 6 being scored off the last over of it bowled by Lawson.

Although the pitch wasn't too good for bowling, there was some clouds in the sky and it allowed Pattinson to swing the ball into the right handers and get the occassional one to move away and the swing brought his second wicket, swinging the ball into Smith who was bowled for 13 off 44 and it was 34/3 after 16 over's.

Pattinson bowled out his 10 over's, taking 2/30 with 1 maiden and it was 51/3 after 20 over's. Ealham was brought on to replace Pattinson as he had bowled out and he only conceded 3 runs off his first over.

Mitchell and Kervezee were trying to rebuild the innings and were at 66/3 after 24 over's. Spin was introduced with Jason Brown. Maybe he could take an important wicket.

Mitchell and Kervezee survived 17 over's together before their partnership came to an end, Kervezee trapped in front by Ealham for 27 off 50. They were still going very slowly at 88/4 after 33.1 over's. Ealham had bowled 6.1 over's for figures of 1/14 so far with Brown bowling from the other end with 0/13 from 5 over's.

Ealham was rested after bowling 7 over's for 1/16 and Patel was given the ball for the first time in the match after 35 over's. He took a wicket in his first over, Mitchell trapped in front for 33 and we were in a commanding position. Knappett and Batty were now at the crease. It was even better for us when Batty was trapped in front by Brown for a golden duck and Brown had his reward for an excellent spell.

Patel took his second wicket in his third over and Ali was out for 2. They took the final powerplay in the 41st over with the score 97/7 and Adams was brought back into the attack. Ealham bowled from the other end. Knappett made 13 but edged behind off Ealham and he was back in the pavilion. Jones went without scoring and it was 110/9 after 44 over's. Adam came in to bowl his 10th over.

Adams finished a great spell with figures of 1/17 from 10 over's including 4 maidens. A wonderful economical bowling performance from the New Zealand bowler. Ealham came in to bowl his last over. He finished with 3/24 from his 10 over's and all bowlers had bowled well. We still needed to get the last wicket though. Lawson was brought on for his 6th over and he would have 2 over's to bowl if needed. Brown took the final wicket of Arif in his final over for 11 and they were all out for 135, Brown finishing with 2/26 from 9.2 over's.

I was really happy with our bowling performance, Adams taking 1/17 (10), Pattinson taking 2/30 (10), Ealham taking 3/24 (10), Brown taking 2/26 (9.2) and Patel taking 2/4 (3) and Lawson bowled well without reward. It should have been an easy chase but you never know what could happen.

Do people prefer the writing this way. Just shorter paragraphs and I don't think I wrote as much.

Nottinghamshire vs Worcestershire 2nd Innings

Squads_NOT_v_WOR.jpg

We started off playing safely and conserving our wickets and were 24/0 after 10 over's and the bowling powerplay was taken straight away. The first wicket fell in the 17th over, Wood trapped in front for 13 off 45. The score was 41/1.

We were just taking it easy, going at around 3 an over, 79/1 after 25 over's, Shafayat on 32* and Patel on 24*. We were 94/1 after 30 over's and we took the batting powerplay.

Shafayat brought up his fifty off 105 balls and the Required Run Rate was only 1.6 an over, needing 24 runs from 15 over's.

Patel brought up his fifty off 100 balls before being dismissed next ball and it was 131/2, needing 5 runs from 7.2 over's to win. Voges was dismissed for a duck but it didn't mean much at all. We were losing some late wickets though as Brown got out for a duck as well. Shafayat took us past their score with a boundary so we won by 6 wickets with 5.2 over's to spare. Patel was named MOTM for his 2 wickets and half century.

A good result for us and we won mainly due to our great bowling. We had won both our Challenge Trophy matches against Worcestershire and we were sitting in a good position on the table.

Just read through both innings, nice work.
Adams was outstanding with the ball, and Shafayat and Patel got you home easily with the bat.

Hampshire vs Nottinghamshire

I'm just going to post the full match now instead of innings by innings.

Squads_HAM_v_NOT.jpg

The only change being made to the side was Chris Read being brought in for Klokker who had dropped 2 catches over the last 2 games and starting to lose the form he had shown in the opening 2 games. Voges lost the toss and we were put out in the field. Adams and Pattinson took the new ball.

Lumb was the first wicket to fall, trapped in front by Adams for 1 off 11 balls and they were 4/1 after 2.4 over's. A great start. Pothas lasted 5 balls before being dismissed, trapped in front by a yorker from Pattinson for 5.

Adams had bowled an expensive over next up but then Pattinson and Adams teamed up to take the third wicket, Crawly popping it up for Adams at short leg off the bowling of Pattinson and he was out for 5. 22/3 and we were in a superb position.

They started to get hold of the bowlers going to 52/3 from 10 over's and we took the bowling powerplay. Jermaine Lawson replaced Adams who had taken 1/22 from 5 over's. Pattinson was taken off after 6 over's with figures of 1/34. Ealham took the ball.

We finally took the fourth wicket, through the bowling of Lawson, Ervine edging to slip for 19 and it was 76/4 after 16.4 over's. Voges nearly took a screamer at slip to get rid of Benhime but it just slipped out of his hands.

Brown was first brought on in the 23rd over to replace Lawson who had bowled 6 over's for 1/30. Ealham bowled 7 over's before being taken off for Patel who bowled really well last match. There was a dropped catch off his first over which didn't please him.

There was only 24 runs hit in the 9 over's from the spinners since Patel was brought on but they still hadn't taken a wicket as Carberry was now in the 80's with Benham on 30*. Carberry couldn't go on though, trapped in front by Brown for 82 off 110 balls and it was 163/5 from 36.3 over's. Brown was given a rest after bowling 8 over's for 1/36 in which Adams was brought back on into the attack.

The change worked as Benham mistimed it high into the deep where Pattinson took the catch and it was 176/6, Benham out for 41. The batting powerplay was taken after 39 over's but Patel stayed on and went into his 7th over.

He had bowled a maiden in the powerplay which was excellent. Adams was taken off from the other end probably because of Pattinson still having 4 over's left but there was only 8 over's to bowl them. He only conceded 3 runs from his first over back into the attack. Patel continued going into his 9th over.

Adams took the ball again from Patel who still had 1 over left but would it prove a good move. He started off well after bowling a short ball that beat the edge first ball and then pitching it up and it took out offstump. They were 205/7 after 48 over's and Patel, Pattinson and Adams still had an over left. In the end, Pattinson took the second last over, most probably for Adams to continue from the other end for the last over.

Maybe it wasn't a good move as Cork hit 5 fours in 5 balls to have a massive 21 runs off the over. Adams bowled from the other end. 4 runs came off the last over and they finished the innings 231/7. Cork finished on 41*.

Adams had bowled really well for 3/43 from 10 over's, Pattinson was good up until his last over where he was hit for 21 giving him figures of 2/67 from 10 over's and Patel was really economical taking 0/23 from 9 over's with 2 maidens.

Scorecard_HAM_v_NOT_1st_Inn.jpg

So we needed 232 runs to win from our 50 over's. It would still be pretty hard despite it being still a pretty good pitch to bat on. Wood got us started hitting a six of his second ball, a half volley being smashed over mid wicket and then he backed it up with a four later in the over. 11 off the first over.

Shafayat only made 2, bowled by Mascarenhas which brought Samit Patel to the crease. We were 46/1 after 10 over's, Wood doing nearly all of the work with 29* off 22 with Patel up the other end with 5* off 28.

The spinner, Tahir was brought on early and Wood took a liking hitting 2 boundaries off the over. Wood was bowled by Taylor for 48 off 37 balls and it proved a very crucial innings. We were 74/2 off 14 over's, the required run rate now 4.3 an over. The bowling powerplay was taken after 17 over's.

Wood's dismissal seemed crucial for Hampshire as the RRR had risen to 4.8 an over from 4.3 since he got out. Patel realised he had to get going with 25* off 60 balls. Voges was at the other end with 12* off 25. They did get it going hitting 18 runs from 2 over's and the RRR was now back down to 4.5 an over.

Ervine was keeping it tight though and Voges was bowled for 23 by Ervine and it was 129/3 after 29 over's. Brown now accompanied Patel at the crease. Brown had started well just rotating the strike and hitting a few boundaries as he went to 14* off 8 balls with 2 four's.

Patel was trapped in front by Tahir for 58 and the game probably just turned in their favour. Read was now at the crease. His first match of the season. The RRR had risen to 5 an over now with 12 over's to go and we were in a bit of trouble. The batting powerplay was taken.

Read was having trouble getting started and was dropped by the bowler but I think it was pretty good he was still at the crease for their liking as Read wasn't playing well at all. It was now really up to Brown who was on 36* off 45 balls. The RRR was now 6.4 an over for the last 5 over's, needing 32 runs to win and the 200 was brought up.

Well Read had started to get going and it was now 16 runs required from 3 over's. Brown was having trouble bringing up his fifty hitting 4 dot balls from the next over before getting a single to bring it up. 15 runs from 2 over's now. Could we do it.

Only 6 runs were scored off the 49th over so it left 9 required off the last over. We only managed 2 runs in the end, losing by 6 runs. I thought we could have won that but them last 3 over's were really crucial to them. I was happy with Wood's knock and with Patel's half century as well. I would have liked a win but we already had a few and were in top position on the table before this game so it didn't matter too much.

Well that was a very long update.

Ireland CC v Nottinghamshire

Will now just be playing the match and doing a small summary after it.

hedger_14 added 18 Minutes and 1 Seconds later...

We fell to defeat in this match after a poor battnig effort and you know it's poor when you're number 11 batsman gets the second highest score. Patel hit 29 but noone else other than the number 11 batsman, Lawson scored above 20. Langford Smith's spell of 3/25 from 10 over's really troubled us and we only managed 153 all out from 44.4 over's.

After 2 early wickets, one each for Pattinson and Adams, Botha and Bray put on a crucial partnership of 118 before Botha got out for 78. Bray scored 39 off 95 but his slowness didn't matter chasing such a low total. The only good thing to come away from this game was Patel's good performance, firstly scoring 29 with the bat and then coming back to take 4/19 from 5 over's with the ball. They won by 4 wickets in the end with 12.5 over's to spare. We needed to come back well now.

Unlucky with your last two loses.
Two losses to Ireland could end up being costly.
Samit Patel is real class, Adams was really disappointing with the ball.

Leicestershire vs Nottinghamshire

Squads_LEI_v_NOT.jpg

Well we made 2 changes to the side that suffered a heavy defeat against Ireland CC, Klokker back in for Read after making 154 and 43 in his last 2nd Team match and Fletcher was also brought in for Lawson after he took 6/60 and 5/50 in his last 2nd Team match. Hopefully he could continue his form in the first team. We lost the toss and were sent into bat.

We went alright scoring 210 all out from 47.5 over's. Wood hit 39, Voges hit 32 and Brown hit 23 but it was Klokker who scored 40 off 39 balls and Ealham who scored 43* off 50 balls that got us to that total. Fletcher also survived 22 balls at #11 to give us a few more runs.

We always had a chance to win this game and the bowlers bowled really well giving us that win, bowling Leicestershire out for 127. Adams took 2/32 from 8 over's, Pattinson took 4/31 from 9 over's getting himself man of the match, Fletcher bowled really economical taking 0/8 from 5 over's, Brown took 1/15 from 5 over's, Ealham was one of the best bowlers taking 2/24 from 7 over's and was unlucky not to get MOTM for that as well as his 43* and Patel took 1/14 off 3 over's but should have had 2 wickets and after bowling a maiden first over, having a dropped catch in it. We deserved the win and we came away with the 2 points.

Those are the standings with 1 match to play in the Challenge Trophy group stage. Leicestershire with no wins from all 8 games are out but there is still all to play for. Notts will play Hampshire in their final group match so a win will guarantee either team at least 3rd place. The other big game though is Worcestershire Vs Ireland CC, the winner taking top spot. Although, Worcestershire have a better net run rate so if Worcestershire wins, the team who wins out of Notts/Hants game will go through but if Ireland win, then it will come down to net run rate. If Ireland and Hampshire win, Hampshire will have a better net run rate than Worcestershire so both Ireland and Hampshire will go through but if Notts win, then it depends on how big they win by and how big a margin, Worcestershire lose by. Anyway, there is still all to play for in the final round.
