Story A Managers Journey to the top - Notts Fall To Heavy Defeat Against Yorkshire

He didn't even get into double figures in the first match of the season as well which is why I dropped him.

Worcestershire vs Nottinghamshire 2nd Innings

Squads_WOR_v_NOT.jpg

We were in a very strong position going into their innings. Defending 374 was not a tough ask but the bowlers still had to bowl well if we wanted to win. Moore and Solanki were opening the batting. Adams was to bowl first.

Moore hit 2 fours in the first 3 balls but Adams got his revenge, Moore mistiming a ball from Adams down the ground to Pattinson who took an easy catch. Pattinson took the ball to bowl from the other end. Pattinson was taken off after 2 expensive overs which brought Jermaine Lawson into the attack. He was hit for 11 runs off the first 4 balls but struck the next ball, Smith trapped in front for 12 and it was 51/2 from 6 over's. Solanki was bowled by Adams for 31 off 26 and that was the big wicket. They were 63/3 after the first 10 over's which was a good start for us. Both Adams and Lawson had bowled really well so far.

Andre Adams was taken off after bowling 7 overs for figures of 2/40 and Pattinson was given the ball again. The Required Run Rate was now 8 per over so it looked like we were in a commanding position. After 17 over's, Brown was brought into the attack. Brown was being hit but he took an important wicket on the last ball of his third over, Mitchell dismissed for 59. Patel was given a chance to take a few wickets in the 23rd over. He was hit for 13 runs in his first over so the spinners were not really working. Voges however took Brown out of the attack after 3 over's and bowled himself. The change worked, Ali trapped in front for 11 off 5 balls and it was now 166/5. The batsman were taking the attack to Patel as they hit a six and a four to start the next over but Patel was trying hard and it paid off as Knappett was bowled out for 53 off 40 balls. After conceding 28 runs in 2 over's, Patel was taken off and Adams was to bowl again. He showed his good form, getting Ali trapped in front in Adams first ball of the over for 8. Adams took his 4th wicket 3 balls later, Mason edging behind to Klokker.

They were in a lot of trouble at 212/8 and Lawson was brought back into the attack. It was now 159 runs needed from 20 over's but they only had 2 wickets in hand so it would not be easy. Adams was to bowl his 10th over and he still needed 1 wicket to take his fifth wicket. He couldn't get it though as the Batty and Jones hit him for 8 in the over. Lawson took his second wicket as the ninth wicket finally fell, Jones caught at short leg by Adams for 21. As Adams had bowled out his 10 over's, Pattinson was given the ball to bowl to Batty who was on 23* and Arif who was only on 1*. 2 play and misses and an LBW appeal to start the over but Arif managed to keep it out scoring 3 off it. Arif couldn't survive the good bowling from Lawson as he popped one up to the bowler for a caught and bowled and Arif was out for 4. Batty finished on 23*, Worcestershire all out for 233 in 33.1 over's. Adams was unlucky not to get a 5 wicket haul but finished with figures of 4/52 from 10 over's. Lawson took 3 wickets and Brown, Patel and Voges all took 1 wicket each. Wood was named MOTM for his double century.

You were pretty dominant that match.
Adams was great with the ball, but there was no doubt Wood deserved man of match.

Nottinghamshire vs Somerset Day 1

Squads_NOT_v_SOM.jpg

Only 1 change was made to the side that thrashed Worcestershire a few days ago, Mark Ealham given his first game of the season, in for Mark Wagh who didn't score in the One Day match against Worcestershire. Anyway, the pitch had a bit of grass on it and looked like it could help the pace bowlers a fair bit, especially later in the game. It didn't influence Voges' decision as he won the toss and had a bat.

Wood and Shafayat made their way out to the middle to face the new ball. It was a very slow start, only 10 runs coming off the first ten over's but we hadn't lost a wicket. Shafayat and Wood both made their way into double figures without too much trouble apart from slow scoring. Shafayat was trapped in front by Thomas for 17, 40 minutes before the lunch break. Patel brought the fifty up with his second boundary and it was 53/1, Wood on 20* and Patel on 11* with 20 minutes left in the session. It was a very slow session, only scoring 61 runs from it in the 32 over's bowled. Hales was going slowly but solidly on 23* off 97 balls while Patel was going a bit quicker on 13* off 31 balls.

The second session started and we wanted to get a bit of a move on. They did that scoring 22 runs off the first 5 over's of the session as Wood moved to 38* while Patel had just moved into the 20's. Patel moved into the 30's with a huge six back over the bowlers head. Wood was finally out on 45, bowled by Phillips. Wood's 45 came off 140 balls. Voges came to the crease to bat with Patel who was now settled. After 50 over's, we were 112/2 and Voges was still getting his eye in with 6* off 16 balls. Patel moved to 40* off around 100 deliveries but other than 1 streaky shot, he had batted superbly. Patel moved closer to fifty with his second six of the innings, hammered over point. They decided to go with the spinner late in the session hoping to take a late breakthrough. Voges and Patel were looking to battle through to tea so they wouldn't be looking aggressively. Patel brought up his fifty which was his 4th half century of the season, his second in First Class cricket. He still hadn't passed 100 though, getting out after getting good starts. We got through to tea, with 147/2 on the board. Patel was going well on 54* off 129 balls while Voges had just got himself in on 23* off 51 balls.

The third session was underway and we would be looking for 240 by the end of the day. Patel scored the first boundary of the session with another six over third man. Patel made his way onto 71* while Voges had just moved into the 30's. Somerset took the new balls after 80 over's, the score 187/2. Patel was on 75* with Voges on 41* and looking for another fifty. Patel hit another boundary to go into the 80's and the 200 was brought up for the loss of only 2 wickets. Voges had brought up another fifty. Could he go on to make a good score. In the last 6 matches, 5 scores had been in between 40 and 60 and the other score was 27 so he wasn't going on after getting a good start. He failed to go on yet again, Voges caught at short leg off Willoughby for 58, the score now 217/3. A good partnership between Voges and Patel there. Brown was nearly ran out for a diamond duck as he was called through for a risky single. Patel had moved onto 90* and there was now 1 over left in the day. Brown was on strike. 1 run to start the over. Patel got another single to give the strike for Brown for the last 2 balls. The last ball of the day was a bouncer and Brown gave himself some room and cut it away for 4. At the end of the day, we were 228/3. Patel finished on 91* while Brown was on 8*. Willougby was pick of the bowlers for the day bowling 24 over's, 6 maidens, 1/38. So we would be looking for some more runs on Day 2 before giving our bowlers a chance to take some wickets.

Scorecard_NOT_v_SOM_Day_1.jpg

Great knock so far by Patel, he will surely look to push onto 100 in the morning.
Your in a strong position ATM, but your slow scoring won't allow you to get max batting points.

Yeah but the pitch is doing a lot for the pace bowlers. Another reason I played Ealham so I wouldn't lose too much in the batting department but gain another pace bowler to bowl on this pitch. I was really thinking of bowling first but I decided it would be a nightmare to bat last on this track so I might give up max batting points to get a win.

Wow, Wood domination! Well played Hedger.

Fairly even first day there, already looks set for a draw.

Nottinghamshire vs Somerset Day 2

Squads_NOT_v_SOM.jpg

The second day of the First Class match against Somerset. The sun was out and it looked like there would be blue skies for the entire day. With 228 on the board for only the loss of 3 wickets, we could easily make 400+. Our slow batting might only get us a draw though but it was a tough pitch to bat on so I'm happy that we only lost 3 wickets on the first day.

Patel made his way back to the middle on 91* with Brown at the other end on 8*. Patel hit the first runs of the day with a boundary through point in the first over. After 100 overs, we were 237/3. Brown was the first man to go on Day 2, edging to second slip off Caddick and he was out for 12. Patel was not out on 97 and Klokker joined him at the crease. He was off the mark first ball with a boundary. After surviving 2 LBW appeals that weren't very close to being out, he hit the boundary that brought up his century. Well played from the young all-rounder. His century came from 240 balls which was pretty slow but that didn't really matter. Klokker moved into the 20's off only around 40 balls so it wasn't too slow to start an innings. Patel was hitting the ball with brute strength as he drove Banks down the ground for his 4th six of the innings. We had played fairly well this session, playing a bit quicker, having scored 65 runs in 20 over's, a bit over 3 an over. Klokker was trapped in front by Banks for 28 off 62 balls but Patel was still down the other end on 124*. We now had 1 over to get 5 runs to get an extra batting point, meaning we would have 3 as we would have passed 300. Ealham did that by scoring a four in the third ball of the over after Patel had hit a single to start the over so we had 3 batting points and the 300 was up. It only took Ealham 14 balls to get into double figures which was good. There was now only 15 minutes in the session. We were 325/5 at the end of the session, scoring 97 runs in the session. Patel was not out on 139 with Ealham on 15* so this was the main partnership from now on, going into the bowlers after a wicket fell. Adams could hold a bat but was still not classed as an all-rounder.

I asked the team to score some quick runs in this second session as we were still going slowly. That caused the wicket of Ealham, trapped in front for 18. Patel quickly went to 150* and raised his bat to the crowd. 3 slips and a gully was put in for Adams but he was off the mark with a 2 and then ran a single the next ball to move onto 3*. Patel was finally dismissed for 158, bowled by Caddick and now we were into the tail. Adams was looking to score quickly since he was batting with the tail and moved to 18* off only 27 balls. Adams had trouble scoring from then on and got out for 20 off 43 balls. We were 368/8 now. Pattinson managed to hit Banks down the ground for a six off a full toss. It was very well timed. Brown was out for 14 and we were 395/9. Pattinson couldn't get us to 400 as he was trapped in front for 15 leaving Lawson on 1*. He had the best strike rate of the innings, having a SR of 50. 397 was a very good score on this pitch and hopefully our bowlers could show that, bowling Somerset out cheaply.

Scorecard_NOT_v_SOM_1st_Inn.jpg

We ended up having to bowl 1 over before tea, which Adams was to bowl. 3 runs was scored off the over and we went and had tea. Pattinson was to bowl the first over after tea. It took us 4 over's to get the first wicket, Pattinson getting Edwards caught at short leg by Adams. Adams bowled 5 over's before being taken off for Lawson. The change worked, second ball being edged by Francis to second slip where Voges took a good catch moving to his right. Ealham was brought on in the 15th over for Pattinson who had bowled 7 over's, 1/33. With an hour left in the session, they were 71/2. Lawson couldn't take any more wickets in the rest of his spell and was taken off after 7 over's for Adams to bowl again. Brown was given the ball with 20 minutes left in the session in hope to take a late wicket. It worked as Durston edged behind to Klokker who took the catch and Durston was out for 69, Somerset now 103/3. We were now down to 3 over's left in the day and Adams was going into his 9th over. Adams bowled the last over of the day and it seemed like they survived the day but Hildreth was bowled by Adams for 2 off 14 balls and they finished the day 116/4, de Bruyn not out on 21. Adams, Lawson, Pattinson and Brown had all taken wickets. We were in a strong position going into Day 3 with a 281 run lead and they only had 6 wickets in hand.

Scorecard_NOT_v_SOM_Day_2.jpg

Summary_NOT_v_SOM_Day_2.jpg

If it wasn't for Durston's quickfire 66, you would be well in control, which you kind of are.
A few quick wickets in the morning, and you'll be able to enforce the follow on, if you want that is.
Keep up the good work.

It probably depends on how much behind they are after the first innings. If it is between 150-175, I will probably bat again while if it is more than that, I will enforce it.

I pretty much always enforce it, unless there is plenty of time left in the game, and I feel I can get some batting practice in, in that time.

Nottinghamshire vs Somerset Day 3

Squads_NOT_v_SOM.jpg

The third day now and we had a good lead and were in a strong position. If we could get a few wickets early, it could cause the last wickets to fall in quick succession and we could enforce the follow on.

Anyway, Brown was allowed to continue with his spin to start off the day. A boundary was hit in the first over and it was 5 off the over. Adams bowled from the other end. Kieswetter was the first wicket to fall on Day 3, trapped in front by Brown for 10 off 10. Adams was taken off after his 14th over of the innings and Jermaine Lawson was given the ball again. The change worked as he clean bowled Banks for 10 and it was 156/6 and we had a lead of 241. 1 wicket can easily lead to another, they say and that happened this time around, Thomas caught behind off Brown for a duck. Phillips was trapped in front by Lawson without scoring and we were now really on top, having them 158/8, Somerset needing 89 more runs to avoid the follow on. Brown was taken off for Adams to have a quick spell in hope to get the last 2 wickets quickly. It took him 2 over's to get the first wicket, Caddick out for a duck and Adams had his second wicket. They were now just set to defend, having batted out 3 maidens in a row now. There was still 41 minutes to lunch so we definately would want to have them out by then. And we got the last wicket the next over, Lawson getting Willoughby trapped in front for a duck, leaving de Bruyn on 53*. With a 225 run lead, we enforced the follow on as we fancied our chances to bowl them out for below 250 at most. Lawson took 4 wickets in the first innings, Brown took 3, Adams took 2 and Pattinson took 1, all bowlers bowling well.

Scorecard_NOT_v_SOM_2nd_Inn.jpg

We still had 25 minutes in the session left and after that last spell from Adams, he took a rest and Ealham opened the bowling. Pattinson bowled from the other end. They started off well, scoring 35 runs in the 7 over's bowled before lunch and they hadn't lost a wicket.

Adams bowled first after lunch and Lawson was also brought on from the other end. We hadn't taken an early wicket and Pattinson was brought back on for Lawson. He took a wicket at the end of the first over he was brought back on, bowling Edwards out for 29 and it was 1/70. Francis got reckless against Adams after he had bowled 6 over's for only 8 runs and got out to him, clean bowled by Adams for 37. So after 20 over's, they were 70/2 and there were 2 new batsman at the crease. Adams took his second wicket in his next over, and he had figures of 2/8 off 7.2 over's. 3 wickets in the space of 4 over's and we were back on top. There was still an hour left in the second session so we would be hoping to take another 1 or 2 more wickets before the end of the session. Pattinson got that wicket next over, getting de Bruyn trapped in front for 1. Adams was rested after bowling 8 straight over's and Brown was introduced into the attack. Pattinson had bowled well and took his third wicket, getting Kieswetter trapped in front for 6. So after failing to take an early wicket, they went from 70/0 to 81/5. Hildreth and Banks put on a 17 run partnership before Banks was trapped in front by Brown for 6. Pattinson took his fourth wicket of the innings, into his 13th over, 10th of the spell and it was 104/7. Adams was brought on for the second last over of the session and Brown bowled the last over. It was 117/7 at tea, and we had a 108 run lead.

Adams continued after tea, and Pattinson was brought back on from the other end. They were making sure they didn't get out as we were yet to take the 8th wicket in the first half hour of the session. Brown and Lawson were brought back on again as Adams and Pattinson couldn't take this wicket. Brown took the important wicket, Phillips caught in the outfield for 19 off 72 balls and we now only had a lead of 74. Klokker dropped Thomas on 29 and I don't think he was happy. We now had only 34 minutes in the third day and I think the players would have been happy to finish a day early. Pattinson was given another chance to take his 5 wickets, brought on for Lawson. Pattinson celebrated as he took his 5th wicket of the innings, Caddick out for a duck but he survived 22 balls and there was 15 minutes left in the day to take 1 wicket. Thomas was still at the crease on 39* off 117 balls. We only needed 1 ball though, Willoughby edging his first ball to Voges at second slip for a golden duck. So they were all out for 162 so we won by an innings and 63 runs. They collapsed after making a good opening partnership, going from 70/0 to 81/5 before they went from 104/7 to 151/8, Thomas and Phillips putting on a 47 run partnership and we ended up bowling them out for 162. We were very happy with our performances, our batsman playing well on a poor pitch before our bowlers did the job bowling very well. Patel was named MOTM for his 153. The toss was very crucial in this game, and ended up giving us a win. It was a very pleasing result without some of our best bowlers.
