Australia A tour of Zimbabwe

Players like Warner can be so focused on getting boundaries that they'll play a lot of shots for no runs, particularly those low percentage "dinky" ones. One dayers require batsmen who can reliably get a single off any sort of delivery more than batsmen who can potentially get a boundary off any sort of delivery.

Hughes has always been able to play an accumulative role in one dayers, but this is easily his best effort. Last I saw, Hughes looked much more comfortable playing into the leg side and so perhaps when that translates to one day cricket, Hughes v2 is a more all-round stroke player.

Hughes in the past struggled to rotate the strike because of his short ball weakness but it seems his new technique has put him in better stead. Key for him is to carry this form on for NSW and remind the selectors he can play OD cricket before the selectors put him into the Langer basket.

Cummins misses out with a back strain. The first class side looks to be grooming quite a few players for the Test side, while the one day team is very much a development squad.

The one day squad is a bit harder to gauge. There are a few players there that I would hesitate to make a team out of and it looks as though 19 year old Mitch Marsh might actually be the best player in the side. It could use a Wade or a Christian; someone young, but not that young. Of course the positive spin on that is that this is a team that could learn quite a lot. However, the one day leg should be the tougher portion of the tour, so it does seem a bit odd. They might not learn so much if they can't bat 50 overs.

My other qualm is that Hilfenhaus is not the only senior bowler who could use a chance to get some things in order. If players like Khawaja, Hughes, Beer and Krejza are only in the squads so they can press their case to play Sri Lanka, then where are all the others? McKay probably won't be fit, as he only started jogging last month and this tour is next month. However, what about Harris or Bollinger? They have both played IPL, so even if they're not fully conditioned yet, they're not carrying anything serious. It seems like the policy is that injury prone bowlers are rested and fit bowlers bowl until they're injury prone.

Not a bad prediction - his batting and bowling averages were very good for the series. I'm surprised at how well they did, I really am. I thought the bowling wouldn't have been strong enough, but it turned out to be their strength.

The four-day squad looks a lot stronger, but I hope Hilfy and Siddle aren't played for both matches. I would really like to see Copeland and Butterworth given proper shots.

I guess Hilf and Sid are just training and providing support. The tri-series was the toughest part of the tour and in spite of some squeaky bum moments, they got through it with the youth policy. They should be able to keep it up.

Numbers might be against our beloved Other Son of Swampy, but I would suggest it's more likely that all the batsmen play and one of Krejza, Beer or Starc misses out.

Finch has been added to the four day squad so that's it up to 13 again. Any chance they'll play with both spin bowlers? They did in the one dayers, but then they pretended O'Keefe was an all-rounder and you can't do that with Krejza or Beer.

OSOS didnt' bat in the warm-up match so I would suspect he's benchwarming for at least the first match proper.

Hmm so it sounds like they enjoyed tucking into the spinners, but they went a bit too far against Beer and got out...3 of them were caught Krejza, Copeland, Hilfenhaus - outfield catches maybe? I'm not too excited about spinners that are easy to score off.

Hard to know what to make of it really, it was only a 2 day game so they had nothing to lose. Beer is meant to be an economical spinner not a Krejza. We will know more when it comes to the proper stuff. Still too bad O'Keefe wasn't playing as that would have given us a better idea of what was happening.

Looks like we have a bowl off going on with Siddle and Hilfy opening the bowling. No Butterworth which is disappointing and they only just fitted Copeland in by taking out a batsmen.

Seems like Krejza will bat at 7, hopefully we can keep Zimbabwe to a sub 250 total.

Very solid start for Zimbabwe so far, haven't lost a wicket. This will give us a good indication of what the bowlers are made of, most likely requiring the spinners to make a breakthrough.
