yeah i saw that retired hurt.
honestly, though, australia aren't carrying any more underperforming players (over a reasonable period of time) than anyone else.
obviously gillespie has lost the confidence of his peers now, and he will no doubt be replaced. it was necessary to play him in at least one test however, as he has been reliable in the past and deserved a chance to prove his worth. after edgbaston, though, i think enough was already enough.
hayden is the batsman that most people are calling for to be dropped. his 12 month form is still better than geraint jones, andrew flintoff, sourav ganguly, vvs laxman, salman butt and marvan atapattu.
if you look around the world most teams are "carrying" a couple of batsmen. often more. australia has the luxury of playing what is practically 7 specialist batsmen. this is a curse when they dont perform to standard. by contrast, england are playing 5 specialists. flintoff's abilities with the ball allow him a degree of leighway while batting, while it is debatable whether a more specialised keeper would be of less worth with the bat than geraint jones.
calls to put andrew symonds in the test team are baseless and foolish. you dont select a reserve batsman for the test squad simply so you can call up other batsmen ahead of him. symonds was ineffective in his test opportunities and that is more relevant than his form in odis.
