Bangladesh tour of England, May-July 2010

This is the sort of thing that makes Test cricket so good. There's one day left and almost anything could happen. I'm really anticipating tomorrows play

I'd like to see us go into Old Trafford with 5 bowlers, but the problem is who do you pick as a 5th bowler? I have no confidence in Bresnan as a number 7 bat, and I'm not convinced his bowling is good enough either; he's taken 2 wickets in this match, one of them was Rubel, the other was Shahadat, that just isn't good enough. Broad's not good enough to bat 7, and Swann's not consistent enough. Who do we go for? Could potentially pick Rashid, as he is probably good enough to bat 7, but is his bowling good enough? He has 21 wickets at 35 this year, and 288 runs at 41, but is tha good enough? Another possibility is Shahzad, but I've not been impressed with his bowling from the little I've seen, so I'm not sure he's good enough, but it might be worth giving him a go at Old Trafford. I'm not convinced with Luke Wright as a Test player either, so really, there aren't too many options. It's all well and good in theory, but if picking a 5th bowler doesn't improve the bowling that much, and then negatively impacts the batting, then it's pretty pointless isn't it? We really could do with a class all-rounder to come through.

I'd probably have to pick Shahzad for the next Test, and bring Broad back in place of Bresnan. Chris Broad made it clear on TMS yesterday that Broad was miffed at being dropped for a Test match, so he will want to come back in, which allows us to bin Tubby Bresnan. So we end up going in with:

Strauss
Cook
Trott
Pietersen
Bell
Prior +
Swann
Broad
Shahzad
Anderson
Finn

It's not perfect, and the batting is a tad thin, but who else do you go for?

Prior is not a 6 now, he might have been when he first got in the team but now im even wary of him at 7

Averages 53 at 6, which suggests to me that he relishes the extra responsibility. The problem is though, which batsman do you drop? Can't drop Trott after a double century, Bell was our best batsman over the winter and Collingwood seems nailed on for a spot. Which of those batsmen do you drop once Colly gets over his 'injury'?

No one, thats why they can't go with only 5 batsman.

Bowling attack except for Swann does not look like it will trouble the Aussies either.

No way would I have Shahzad, I'd be looking for an all-rounder to balance it out a bit. Having Shahzad in the team makes an already crumble-likely team even more light in the batting department.

I agree Bres has to go, I just don't think we need a guy who bowls the way he does in the team, we've got Broad and Anderson bowling dangerously, and then bringing in Bres is just a bit too much of a get-away for any batsmen.

I'm looking at the CC statistics and not one name jumps out at me.

Simbazz added 1 Minutes and 30 Seconds later...

Over on those Aussie wickets, I reckon the experience Anderson and Broad have gained over the last few years may do them well, probably Broad more so, I think he's more prone to being the aggressor than Jim.

If Rashid was a quick bowler we'd be sorted, but being a leggie it's gonna be hard to get him in, as 2 spinners probably won't work in Australia. Who knows, there just doesn't seem to be a guy that jumps out, no-one currently in the side is good enough to move upto 7. I'd hate to see Bresnan batting 7 against Australia.

Well, I'm going up to Lords for the last day tomorrow, free entry for Under16s and it's half-term in England, meaning that I can get a lift up with my mates dad and watch what should be a great final days play at Lords tomorrow.

We are back to the "Dark 90s" again. The 5 bowler debate was large headache after Botham retired. England ended up picking jockers like Capel, Chris Lewis, Ealham, Irani, Hollioke, Hamilton, Young Flintoff & even Cork. To bat @ 7 especially overseas to try to accomodate 5 bowlers. It was a great quandary until Craig white (2000-2002/03) & finally Mastr Flintoff emerged as quality all-roundes that enabled us to play 5 bowlers for the majority of 2000s era.

As it stands we really cant play 5 bowlers ever again until a proper all-rounder emerges. Just have to accept that & work with in our limitations.

Could always pick your favourite, Luke Wright mate ;) Or the all-rounder that ripped through the Bangladeshi's in the Lions game.....Ravi Bopara :spy Almost good enough to bat 7 I reckon.

I do agree though. We've not got anyone good enough to bat 7 and bowl 20 overs, so we should play 6 batsmen and pick the best 4 bowlers. Jimmy needs to step up and start bowling properly, Broad needs to find some consistency, Finn/Onions or possibly Jones if he gets fit need to keep taking wickets and Swann will need to bowl exceptionally if we're going to stand a chance in Australia. Just lucky we're facing the current Aussie side really, and not the awesome side of '06-07.

Still though, if the ball is not swinging, who is going to back Swann up and take wickets? I sure as hell would not want Broad bowling for my life.

Broad's probably our best bowler when it's not swinging TBH. Getting Onions back would be a big boost too, he's more of a seam bowler, so he'd be handy when it's not swinging. Simon Jones would be fantastic to get back also, as he's capable of bowling with reverse swing. He's apparently started bowling for the Hamps 2nd's, so we could see him back in FC cricket soon. Be nice to see him finally play some more Test cricket after a 5 and a half year lay-off.

That was my point, he is pretty ████ to be our best when Jimmy is not in play. Broad would not even be in my 2nd Test XI attack

We need to look at our resources this summer to have a good idea what is avalible for the ashes.

Shahzad has to play in the next test. He hits the deck and can get something out of a flat pitch. It's important to have another hit the deck bowler around, since at the moment two thirds of England's attack (Anderson and Bresnan) rely heavily on swing.
Prior will be fine at six. He's played well there in the recent past and England have useful batsmen down the order.

It might be an idea at some point in the summer to trial Rashid in a test match. Swann will need to be rested anyway after the amount of cricket he's played over the last 12 months. The tests against Pakistan could be an option. Plus if he's very successful, he could be a full time option at seven and Australia haven't played spin that well recently.
