Bangladesh tour of England, May-July 2010

Signs a off slow ass improvement.

It's really difficult to bat on that kinda weather in Eng. Even the good teams have troubles batting under those gloomy sky.

So hopefully we'll have a sunny day tomorrow, and another fight back from Desh(?)

Bangladesh should be eyeing to avoid the follow on and get atleast 350 on board.
Come on Mahmudullah and Shahadat you can do this!!!

i doubt they can i know mahmudulla is a great batsman but shahadat isn't im predicting they'll be all-out by lunch.

I cannot blame the Bangladeshi batsmen for the performance really, there was never a time when the ball stopped seaming yesterday for the English bowlers. Even Australia struggled big time on a gloomy 3rd day at Lord's last year.

350? 172/2 > 225/7 > 350/13.5

Last time I checked we only have 10w's per inn.

I think it's about time the department of fair trade thoroughly investigated the policy on refunds. 28.5 overs was it and not a penny back to spectators  You go into a film and see less than a third of it you'd get a refund, or offered free entry to see the whole thing again. Go into a restaurant and get one course out of three you wouldn't get told "tough, it's our policy that if we run out of food and can't make your meal that you go without"

You pay for one days cricket, not TWO HOURS worth, that's in part why I refuse to go these days, that and the extortionate hike in prices which makes it an expensive lottery ticket. They should give part refunds for losing more than 30 overs, 60 overs and not just the current 25 over mark which they suspiciously just manage inbetween bad light all too often  TMS jokingly suggested the umpires were bribed, I think they are under instruction to do all they can to get past 25 overs even if light is a bit dodgy. And of course they do stupid things like take tea at the usual time, or at least earlier than need be (as yesterday) The cricketers did FA all morning, they could have had their lunch a bit later as soon as they knew the scheduled start and played for maybe three hours instead of risking losing light while munching on sarnies they probably didn't want and having a break they really didn't need.

All needs reviewing, people's hard earned cash is being stolen from people and it is a long day to be doing and watching nothing. Last time I was in said circumstance I made my way to the ground for just after 10am, being old trafford it wasn't a long journey, and I didn't see any play until pm. In fact it was near identical to yesterday except there was bright sunshine mostly while there was no play, it took them way too long to get play going and they did manage to squeeze almost exactly the same number of overs play in. Then of course it pee'd it down so everyone got soaked and left at the same time. But at least that ticket only cost me ?20, but a whole day spent from 10am to something like 5pm to watch 28 and a bit overs with no refund and seeing lovely sunshine with no cricket going on

As for the match situation. I know England would prefer to avoid not beating Bangladesh, but maybe they might have to. They bowled better yesterday, or did Bangladesh simply not bat as well. No real signs of improvement in Bangladesh, England didn't bat well, Bangladesh have as usual batted well in patches but not well enough to be competitive. I hope England do retain Finn for the next series to see if it is only cannon fodder he is half-decent against. Bresnan is the new Austin, best left in county cricket and called up in emergencies for shorter versions of the game.

Pierce Brosnan - double-o-seven
Tim Bresnan - double-o-zero

re the follow on, can see it being the only way England can be sure of winning it, as sure as they can be. Depending on the lead and when the innings ends they could bat again, but time is not in their favour and even if they are batting by noon I can see it taking them until near close to declare and they'll not want to risk not winning.

In some ways I hope Bangladesh do hold on for a draw, might teach England to pick good enough players and those that are to take the opposition seriously. That 1st innings was a disgrace, Strauss and Trottsky apart. Given the platform they built, and Trottsky making a double, England should have scored at the very least 50-100 runs more. If Morgan does play the next Test he needs to do a lot better, and I don't mean in terms of runs which was the only passable part of his innings. Great T20 innings perhaps

They should be all out by an hour into play, that is especially if England want to win. Had England not had a good session yesterday then I'd back the draw here, England certainly need to bowl pretty well from here on in if they want to take 13 wickets in two days and not having to do much batting.

Not really much preparation for better sides though, relying on bowling a side out for around 500 in both innings combined in order to win a test. Might well not have made 500 and be very much on the receiving end.

If it is any consolation to Bangladesh fans, this does remind me of Sri Lanka in 1991 a few years before they became a decent side. They had some decent players, offered pockets of resistance, but still lost quite heavily. England didn't play that well but still had too much, so it isn't a similarity in the two matches, but how the two visiting sides performed in patches

ENGLAND vs SRI LANKA (LORDS 1991)

England 1st innings 282
H.Morris 42, Stewart 113.
RJ Ratnayake 5/69

Sri Lanka 1st innings 224
Hathurasinghe 66, PA De Silva 42, RJ Ratnayake 52
De Freitas 7/70

England 2nd innings 364/3d
Gooch 174, Stewart 43, RA Smith 63no

Sri Lanka 2nd innings 285
Jayasuriya 66

England won by 137 runs

The bowling wasn't up to much, Ratnayake apart. The batting also contained Gurusinha and Tillekeratne who both averaged well in Tests, and Mahanama who didn't quite. Once those players established themselves, and chucker came into the side with Vaas they had a good side. Chucker made his debut in 1992, Vaas made his debut two years later (than that)

I just hope for Bangladesh's sake they stick with the bulk of the side and work on them improving, not necessarily just technique but temperament. Get a good ball there's nothing you can do about it, but you can avoid fishing outside off stump and being sucked in by the bowler. They are young, average age 23 I believe, and since they're not exactly competitive yet they may as well grow together rather than keep chopping and changing. If there were an obvious 'quick fix' player or two around then I'm sure they'd have been picked, so give the kids a chance. Sticking with the same players is definitely an option for sides struggling, better sides can't afford to do it if they want to win, but since Bangladesh have only won three Tests and two of those were against a depleted West Indies, they have nothing to lose that they don't already

Before people get harping on Bangladesh's failures, remember that England switch on in bad weather against much better teams. If you couldn't count on that, then James Anderson would not have played forty six and a half Tests. It'd be a bad show by Bangladesh if England had made 500 in those conditions, but that wasn't the case. The England seamers did bowl unplayable deliveries and with only 30 odd murky overs on offer for the day, it was one of those where the fielding team could maximise their efforts, while batting positives weren't going to amount to much, even if they did manage to get on top.

Yeah that's right, even Bresnan managed to beat the bat quite a few times and Swann wasn't even required later in the day. The old ball was moving both ways.

It would be a real shame if he got out playing those silly swings, just needs to pull his head together and play a long innings.

Yeah, head down Tamim son! It'd be pretty funny if bangladesh draw this, hope these two are still around when that deficit is covered.

This must be one of the highest Bangladeshi opening stands in their history.

Brook added 1 Minutes and 50 Seconds later...

They're going to lose. but they're doing ok at the moment.
