You have been on this Bell bandwagon as if Bell will score 100 every time he bats.
I'm not convinced he would have scored big, but at least he has the right approach to batting. Problem with most England batsmen like Kieswetter, Strauss, KP (not playing), Morgan, Broad, Wright, Bresnan (not playing) etc is they want to hit every ball for four or six like it is T20. We lacked a steadying influence, how many got out wafting at the ball or hitting a ball in the air to a fielder less than 10-15 yards away?
Even 30 or 40 from Bell would have steadied the ship, support for Trott who seemed the only one capable of playing a sensible innings. While Bangladesh may feel they deserve and perhaps actually do deserve credit, England didn't exactly force them to win it or indeed stretch them. The fact that England got close takes something away
Strauss 33 off 36 balls
Kieswetter 17 off 20 balls
Morgan 1 off 3 balls
Wright 15 off 22 balls
Shahzad 5 off 9 balls
Broad 21 off 25 balls
Fair enough for Broad late on having no choice, but only Collingwood and Yardy seemed willing to rebuild the innings before trying to take the skin off the ball, the above all having the common factor of scoring at a high rate of knots off not many balls - or getting out trying to. Strauss at least made 30, the rest made quickfire nothings and got out, collectively 59 runs off 79 balls at an SR of 74.68 when a bit more composure was needed.
Morgan comes in at 86/3, takes an awful swing at a ball and is out LBW. Wright's dismissal has an "iss" too many ie was dismal, Broad's dismissal was tame but I guess he hasn't been in form and was trying to get quick runs to save the game. Ironically, maybe if Trott had been a bit more composed he wouldn't have got out. He'd done the hard work getting the target down to six off four and should have been looking for the right ball to smash for four. There was no point getting Bell on strike, a decent yorker would have got him in all kind of trouble as he wouldn't have been able or willing to move his feet much, I guess the moment got to Trott and he was in "do or die" mode.
At least his contribution lasted, the selectors need to look at the number of soft dismissals and the approach and review their selection policy. Yardy and Wright need to go for me, neither is much of a contributor and an extra batsman and bowler might go some way to making the targets smaller and the chases less pressured. On paper a lower order of Wright, Yardy, and Broad may look handy, but in reality it ain't worth much more than 20-30 runs most of the time
