BBL|11 - Derp's Megathread + General Discussions

Six! Sam Heazlett sends the priorly economical Zahir up into the stands over long on.

2/58 from 10. Nabi Xfactoed in for Pattinson.

WICKET! Instant impact from The Prez. One spits and bounces and a top edge from Heazlett goes to Harper's gloves... Mujeeb licking his lips. 3/63

WICKET! Fourth spin wicket of the game. This time, though, it's not because of good bowling (as opposed to the first three). Cooper holes out to deep mid wicket. 4/80

Class from Jake Lehmann! With our permanent players failing, someone else needed to stand up, and Jake Lehmann dispatches Sutherland to the cover fence.
4/92 from 15, and the Surge is taken.

Lehmann brings up his 50! Short and wide crap from Richardson and it's put away.
WICKET! Pfeffer can't clear Sutherland, the tallest man on the field, on the mid wicket fence by about ten centimetres. Unfortunate. 5/98

Shot from Lehmann! Ramps Evans to the fine leg rope. More conventional flick takes the over to 13 from.

McGiffin with his first BBL four! A lovely cut off the back foot beats backward point.

WICKET! A nice dive and tumble catch by Nabi gets rid of Lehmann finally. With that, Kane Richardson becomes the second best bowler in the BBL all time. 6/124

Nabi nails his yorker in the final over! Four dots from Prestwidge (no blame on the 18-year-old) mean just two come from it. 6/128 it finishes. Nabi, Zahir and Richardson limit an inexperienced Heat unit, but Jake Lehmann played outstandingly and Jack Clayton (and, to a lesser extent, Steve McGiffin) showed their promise.

I'll leave you with a question: Sure, the replacement players for Melbourne and Brisbane haven't 100% performed. But they've shown enough to make this a question: could the BBL support 10 teams? I say yes. Canberra and Gold Coast have the market and the venue required, and there's a glut of young talent and club cricket stars who are ready and willing to make the step up.

WICKET! DAVID GRANT CAN HAVE
sorry, I got carried away there and had to censor that. Anyway. Harper ramps David Grant into his own stumps. Is the upset on? 1/0

A quiet few overs. A few nice boundaries by Shaun Marsh, but otherwise the Renegades haven't quite played to their optimum. 1/31 from the five

Welp... McGiffin's not started great. A four from a wide one, then just a good shot from Shaun Marsh for a six (only just) over cover. RRR is now exactly six.

And we do have a secret bowling weapon! One that will break the spine of the Renegades! One that will win us the... IT'S SAM HEAZLETT??? Marsh is on fire and nails it straight for six. That shot also confirms the Bash Boost going to Melbourne. Hits the next ball over mid wicket, both bringing up his 50 and ending the night of the ball which lands in a construction zone.

Finch joins in off Will Prestwidge! It's not hit very well but it's hit into space. Lands just short of the rope. Chance from the third ball, but Finch edges it into the keeper's finger and over his head! A tad late jump from Pfeffer. Next one squares him up. Prestwidge has bowled a great over after that first ball. Last one swings down leg and off the thigh pad - no wait, the edge - to the fence.

Cooper bowls now, and Finch hits one... into the rope? We need to check. Yep. Six. Gets onto the next one better though and puts it into the stands! 1/96 from 10

WICKET! Fakhar with a great catch! Shaun Marsh takes on one too many from Mujeeb and Fakhar runs in and takes a slightly slower and two handed replica of Ben Laughlin's Superman catch! Marsh out for a lovely 57. Renegades 2/96
Ignore the merge warning, I accidentally posted it.

Maddinson gets a short ball from Grant and hooks it 88 metres into the third deck!
WICKET! David Grant gets another one! His pace batterymate McDonald takes the catch at wide ong lon. Maybe there's a comeback? 3/106

WICKET! Grant picks up another. Big high ball taken by Mujeeb at square leg. Sign him permanently, Heat people! Grant can't even believe it. 4/115

Update: David Grant is now on my lockscreen.
WICKET! Ronan McDonald with a huge smile on his face. Harvey flicks the ball straight to Lehmann at forward point. The Renegades haven't won it yet... 5/118
Six to win the game! Maddinson only just clears the man at square leg, but he does, and the game is done. Or is it? According to the umpires, there's another run required. Yep. The single's taken from the next ball and that is game. Some outstanding performances shown by the Heat's replacement players - David Grant is my new favourite obscure cricketer, and shoutout to Ronan McDonald and Jake Lehmann too - but the Renegades, with star bowlers and batsmen, had just too much.
Second game coming up shortly!

Scorchers XI: 1 Kurtis Patterson, 2 Cameron Bancroft (wk), 3 Colin Munro, 4 Laurie Evans, 5 Ashton Turner (capt.), 6 Aaron Hardie, 7 Ashton Agar, 8 Andrew Tye, 9 Matthew Kelly, 10 Tymal Mills, 11 Lance Morris.

Scorchers X-Factor Subs: Peter Hatzoglou, Chris Sabburg.

Thunder XI: 1 Alex Hales, 2 Matthew Gilkes, 3 Jason Sangha, 4 Sam Billings, 5 Ollie Davies, 6 Daniel Sams, 7 Ben Cutting, 8 Nathan McAndrew, 9 Chris Green (capt.), 10 Gurinder Sandhu, 11 Saqib Mahmood.

Thunder X-Factor Subs: Arjun Nair, Brendan Doggett.

Final game for Mills, Billings and Saqib. Let's see... Hales is back, as is Matt Kelly
POTM for Gades-Heat is Shaun Marsh btw

Great start for the Scorchers. 11 from the first.

What a waste! Sandhu bowls one a full set of stumps outside leg, Bancroft tries to ramp and gets a toe edge.

Six that time! Bancroft finally gets a ramp, and it lands just over the rope.
And it's raining. Welp.

Seems very dumb that Pakistani players can play in some states, but not in others. Covid and vaccines are the same everywhere.

Back underway. 18 overs per side.
Seems very dumb that Pakistani players can play in some states, but not in others. Covid and vaccines are the same everywhere.
It has nothing to do with vaccines. Queensland's border requirements state that people who have been in another country in the last 14 days can't enter without completing quarantine.

I am a Queenslander, and while I appreciate our government has done brilliantly with the pandemic, the fact that a COVID positive only has to quarantine for 7 suggests that this rule's lagging a bit...

WICKET! Patterson goes ahrd at Sandhu, but gets nothing, and pops it straight to Short Cover. Easy catch for Cutting. 1/33

Oh no! There should have been a wicket. Bancroft gloves one to Billings, and both of them as well as McAndrew know it. The ump doesn't. Life for Bancroft

Lovely shot! Cover drive from Bancroft to the rope. Time to cash in for him.

1/59 from nine. Need to up the pace here, Munro and Bancroft

WICKET! Chris Green draws the reverse sweep directly to Jason Sangha at backward point! Dodgy dance. Trevor Bayliss is told about the coach's curse (or blessing???) and he asks to be talked to more. Touche. 2/61

Munro was having some issues speeding up. That six will help. Just clipped one on his hip from Sandhu up and on its way into the Scorchers' dugout.
WICKET! Welp. Next ball is shelled to Cutting at cover. Sandhu with his second. 3/80

Ball's being changed. Looks out of shape. Turner seems fine with it, as he pierces the gap at backward point for his second boundary (the first was a fairly average shot, so I didn't report it)
WICKET! The world's weakest celebration and Turner is gone. Big swing to try and take Mahmood down over cover, and a thin edge through to Billings. 4/97

4/99 from 14. Acceleration required

Runout referral from the first ball of the Surgfe, but Evans looks home - he is. Easy.

WICKET! Hardie picks out deep mid wicket from a Sandhu slower one. Three for the quick. 5/107
Wait... Sandhu is on a hattrick!
EVANS HITS THE HATTRICK BALL STRAIGHT UP IN THE AIR! AND BILLINGS CATCHES IT! Sandhu appears to have no idea too! First hattrick in Sydney Thunder history goes to Gurinder Sandhu 6/107

WICKET! Tye slices one into the deep and another catch for deep mid wicket. Sams is coming for the dismissed batsman's golden cap! 7/111

Agar gets onto Saqib! He's been expensive tonight and this one going 94 metres over the sight screen won't help that.
Droppd! Agar swings so hard he lets go of his bat. Meanwhile, Mahmood gets both hands to the sky ball that results but grasses it. The bat went further than the ball.
WICKET! Mahmood takes that anger out on Kelly! Middle stump has been uprooted.
Another six for Agar! In the slot from Mahmood and crunched 88 metres over wide long on.
WICKET! Agar tried to pinch a bye and failed. Decent end though. 9/133 for the Scorchers. Advantage Thunder, but the Scorchers are a defending machine...

I'm not going to be live blogging the second half as I'm probably going to be off to bed during it. Night all

Hello! I finally have coverage!

Sixers XI: 1 Justin Avendano, 2 Josh Philippe (wk), 3 Jack Edwards, 4 Daniel Hughes (capt.), 5 Jordan Silk, 6 Dan Christian, 7 Hayden Kerr, 8 Shadab Khan, 9 Ben Dwarshuis, 10 Jackson Bird, 11 Todd Murphy.

Sixers X-factor subs: Lawrence Neil-Smith, Mickey Edwards.

Scorchers XI: 1 Kurtis Patterson, 2 Cameron Bancroft (wk), 3 Laurie Evans, 4 Ashton Turner (capt.), 5 Aaron Hardie, 6 Chris Sabburg, 7 Ashton Agar, 8 Andrew Tye, 9 Matthew Kelly, 10 Peter Hatzoglou, 11 Lance Morris.

Scorchers X-factor subs: David Moody, Nick Hobson.

So, Munro, Vince and Abbott all out because of COVID I assume (unless Vince is in the England squad, I cannot remember). Sabburg in for the first time in eight years, while Avendano is the first ever player to represent two BBL teams.

See you soon!
