A.Strauss - Fantastic first innings knock of 169 gave England the impitous to get a big first innings lead. A quick 19 in the second innings but was to aggressive late on day 3, which gave India a bit of belief going into day 4.
Overall Rating: 9
A.Cook - Only just made double figures for his runs total in the match, scoring 1 & 9. Poor at the top of the order, being bowled by Pathan in the first innings and run out in the second. Took 2 catches
Overall Rating: 2
M.Vaughan - Made two starts but was unable to go on, hitting 39 and 43 in the first and second innings. The second innings knock was particularly impressive, steadying the ship whilst the top and middle order fell apart. Brilliant bowling choices and was the winning captain. Took two crucial wickets, that of MS. Dhoni and V.Sehwag. Also had a run out and a catch.
Overall Rating: 7
K.Pietersen - Fell 2 short of his half century in the first innings, managing to put on a good partnership with A.Strauss. Made just 7 from 24 balls in the 2nd innings when someone needed to play a big knock. He was cautious in both innings and maybe needed to attack the bowling like we are used to seeing. Took 1 catch.
Overall Rating: 5
P.Collingwood - Made a total of just 4 runs in 14 balls. Lost his wicket twice to part-time spinners, V.Sehwag and S.Tendulkar respectively. Didn't really contribute with the ball, but did manage to be his usual brilliant self in the field with 3 catches and a run out.
Overall Rating: 3
I.Bell - He only amassed a combined run total of 19, falling victim of Irfan Pathan and a Kumble run out. Never got going in either innings and didn't contribute anything to either of England's innings. Bell did manage to make one huge contribution, claiming the massive wicket of MS.Dhoni in the second innings. Dhoni was leading India to an unlikely victory before, on 83, Bell got him caught by K.Pietersen. This wicket started the rot for india as they fell just short of their victory target.
Overall Rating: 4
M.Prior - Scored 26 from 46 in the first innings before he was trapped LBW by A.Kumble. He couldn't step up to the plate in the second innings, scoring just 9 before he fell to S.Tendulkar. Prior took no catches behind the stumps but nor did he drop any.
R.Sidebottom - A poor test for Sidebottom overall. Took just the 1 wicket, that of A.Kumble in the second innings, and scored 25 runs. Didn't bowl with particular rhythm and was in-effective on a bouncy track. The Indian batsman played him comfortably and never looked threatened.
Overall Rating: 2
[*]C.Tremlett - Like Sidebottom, Tremlett never looked threatening with the ball. He didn't get the rub of the green in the 2nd innings when India were fighting for the win, but apart from that he was very poor. Just 3 runs in the first innings and 7 in the second summed up Tremlett's test match. Almost the worst possible start for Tremlett in his first test match.
Overall Rating: 1
[*]M.Panesar - The stand out man for England throughout the test match. Scored vital runs and took a handful of wickets, including those of Tendulkar and Dravid. He took the wicket of Karthik, Jaffer, Tendulkar, Dravid, Pathan, Ganguly and RP Singh in the match and managed to dismiss Dravid and Tendulkar twice. A simply outstanding effort with the ball, and he even managed to hit the knock of his career. A tremendous 38 from 84 deliveries down at the bottom of the order was the difference between England winning and England losing. A truely exceptional performance from the England spinner.
Overall Rating: 10
[*]J.Anderson - His bowling didn't realy stand out, but his 2nd innings kncok of 12* in 55 balls was brilliant. He kept with Monty as these two put on 46 for the final wicket, which gave England a lead of over 300 to play with. He took 2 first innings wickets of S.Ganguly and RP.Singh but only managed the 1 wicket of Jaffer in the second innings. Overall a good performance from the Lancashire seamer, and compared to the other pace bowlers he was by far the best.
Good to see you back Trev Those reviews are excellent. Excluding Monty, overall bowling ratings for England(pace bowlers) are not that impressive.. This is where India has something to think on!
V.Sehwag - Made just 11 in the first innings, but hit a fluent 29 in the second before he misjudged a M.Vaughan delivery. He got his side off to a good start but failed to capitalise on the chance to make a big score. Wasn't used as a spinner with Kumble and Tendulkar doing a good job with the ball. He took 1 catch.
Overall Rating: 4
W.Jaffer - A slow 21 in the first innings and never got going during the chase, scoring just 9. A pretty poor opening partnership with V.Sehwag in both innings and never looked settled at the crease. Was poor with the bat but took some vital catches in the field, 3 in total.
Overall Rating: 3
D.Karthik - Karthik was among his fellow top order team mates as he could only amass 30 runs in his two innings. M.Panesar dismissed him both times which rounded off a very poor test match for Karthik and the Indian top order. He managed to claim two catches.
Overall Rating: 3
R.Dravid - A fine knock of 62 in the first innings was the reason why India managed to make it past 200. With others falling around him he really held together and played a captain's innings. When India needed him in the second innings he could only manage to face 2 balls before M.Panesar took his wicket for the 2nd time in the match. Some real innovative captaining gave his side a chance, after he bowled Tendulkar and Kumble with the new ball.
Overall Rating: 7
S.Tendulkar - A very poor test by his standards, scoring just 35 runs in total. M.Panesar, like many others, was his downfall claiming his wicket in both innings. Although Tendulkar didn't flourish with the bat, he bowled pretty well. He took 3/49 in England's second innings and was the pick of the bowlers. He also claimed two catches.
Overall Rating: 6
S.Ganguly - Two quick fire scores of 18 and 19 rounded off a pretty poor test for Ganguly. He looked in good nick, but threw his wicket away cheaply. He wasn't needed to bowl and just the one run out capped off a very poor test with bat and in the field.
Overall Rating: 3
MS.Dhoni - Made a useful 22 in the first innings before he was trapped LBW by Vaughan. The knock of the match in the second innings, under pressure and almost guiding India to an unlikely victory. A brilliant innings of 83 from 132 deliveries, and even though he fell at the time when he needed to make a century, it was an all-round sublime innings. He didn't have much to do behind the sticks and caught 1 catch from 1. An almost match winning performance from Dhoni.
