FOOTBALL Football Manager Discussion

This game actually sucks and SI suck. They have been giving us the same game since Championship Manager 4 and have only updated the database, done a few bug fixes (some bugs added), made it look better and added a few things.
09 needs to be something new, it isn't really acceptable after so long of having the same game recycled year after year.
I agree, although it is just about playable with the 8.0.1 patch I am still pretty disappointed with the game. The match engine itself seems to be getting less and less like real football (Was watching little dots or reading text ever like real football???? But you know what I mean). Transfers are a joke to be honest. The team talks and press interaction are a waste of time, yes they have increased effects now and they also seem to have slightly different results but its the same 4 or 5 bloody options, there is no innovation there at all. If they don't sharpen up their act they'll be overtaken by CM or the EA Series (Heaven forbid).

I disagree, I like FM08, its the most realistic one out there and the alternative is the excuse of a game that is the later Championship Manager. Rob, what can SI do to make FM better? It's the pinnacle of football management games, they have added new features over the last few years, affiliate teams is just one example of this, though there are many more. Maybe you'll like FM Live when it comes out in March, thats different.

Yes, but while at the moment there is no doubt that it is the best of the bunch. If they continue just bolting gimmicks they will eventually be overtaken They haven't really done anything to the heart of the game for a while now.

For example one of their spangly new features is the transfer centre. Its nice and all, but to be honest, did we really need it?

In the end, i have to agree that they do churn out the same game year after year. And year after year people ask for one thing, and its a major part of Soccer as a whole, Player/Media/Chairman interaction. The inactions is quite frankly a joke, as Kev says, 5 options for every situation!

The transfers are indeed pathetically stupid. Now i might be a Newcastle fan, but Oba Martins isn't worth £30 million, i would pay £20mil but £30 is slighty steep!

I don't believe SI see the CM series, or the terrible EA series as a threat, and they shouldnt. The game is way ahead of both, but lets be honest, it wont last. Every year you see a more notable change in CM.

Really, i'd be happy with the transfers being fixed, and more interaction. I don't think that people will stop the asking if they get them two right, but it'd make it a damn sight more realistic.

I have no major qualms, but there are a few things about the game which do bug me.

Firstly, the match engine doesn't seem to get significantly better version after version, at times it gets worse, especially when you consider the sort of whacky formations and tactics you sometimes have to use to get a decent performance and result out of a match.

Secondly, the transfer market. I'll admit I'm willing to pay slightly more for a 'hot prospect' and a little over a players' value but some requested fees are rediculous. For example, I was interested in van der Vaart, at the time his estimated value was 7.5M, so I offered 10M HSV rejected, I then enquired and they wanted more than double at roughly 18M, now he's good, but thats simply too much for my liking, so I looked elsewhere and found someone. It couldn't have been more than 3 months later when Fiorentina offered 8.5M and HSV accepted without a hassle. I think the major problem is that when a human manager bid the game automatically makes a worthwhile price higher than what it realistically should be to an extent, and it goes both ways usually when the game makes an offer for your players, you can't get away with upping your price like they do to you, you have to be very careful or they simply tell you off.

The last one is that I've been using the same lines to crap my players out after a dismal performace and the exact same one to congratulate them on an excellent result. As well as pretty much the same options to play around with other manager's heads. I'm all for the communications system, by why not take it a step further? Get a few more options in there, enough that you havn't figured out by the end of one season which works best with your team, and that the same talk will have the same effect each time, or with a different team. I always put 'I expect a win' and well that's all that is neccessary for my desired performances 90% of the time.

The transfer market is a bit stupid but sides won't let key players go in real life for a lot more than their asking price like Valencia want 100 million for Villa right now (not in game in the real world :p) and other sides like united would never let Ronaldo go unless it was for about 100 million. Anyone with key player status in game therefore should be extremely hard to buy but normal transfers for average players are wrong and need sorting out. One thing that annoys me is that top clubs don't sack managers often enough, because the managers they've got are obviously rated quite highly even if they only finish 4th every year winning nothing they won't sack them, someone like Madrid wouldn't stand for that for 1 year let alone 3 or 4.

It's so hard to win matches on 07. I've played about 4 matches, and I'm 20th. I've been unlucky though. Like it's a draw, then right at the end with literally a minute to go, they score a goal.

Exactly, quite frankly I was astonished earlier in the thread that Simbazz got Kaka so cheap (£50M plus 50% sell on isn't cheap I know, but for a big name in FM it is!). Don't know about in FM08, I've not gone longer than 1 season with it yet, but I never had problems getting Fergie or Jose fired in older versions ;)

Edit:

Maybe I spoke too soon ;)

Fergie resinged in my current game, quite rightly too :p Manure were doing rather disgracefully. On the other hand Grant has been keeping Chelsea up in the top 3 and no signs of him leaving just yet.

Don't get me wrong key players should go for bucket loads, but it just annoys the hell out of me when its an AI manager making a cheaper offer and it's always getting accepted, and that usually happens right across the spectrum.

Indeed it does, I can think of many occasions when I've been bidding for a player, my bid is turned down and at the same time lower bids from the AI are accepted.

Paul Jewell, Kevin Mead, Irureta and some guy who I can't even be bothered typing even though by now I probably could have typed his name out twice. We really have gone downhill!

I think they need either a 3D match engine or one like CM where you can see the ball's height so you are not thinking "Did that go in the bottom or top corner" or "Is that going over the bar" etc.

If you do well you also get given too much money to spend, at the start of the 2nd season as Coventry I got ?20m, this is without a takeover, I think other people have had silly amounts like ?80m with big clubs...

With all due respect to your post, what do you expect from a 2D pitch, it's called a 2D pitch for a reason. If you want a 3D view, go and campaign in their forums because you certainly won't get your qualms heard by SI on this forum.

Funny, I won two Bundesliga's with Bayern and 3 cups over the course of two seasons and I'm yet to have a silly amount to spend, and Bayern aren't exactly a poor club either.

You cant be bothered to type the name of one of European footballs greatest strikers ? Hristo Stoichkov is an a legend, Bulgarian iirc, awesome player.

I am a fan of FM 08, even though i havent played it for months :P. Its much more fluent, easier to get through a season and more fun. I am glad i bought it.
