India in England Jun-Sept 2014

The loss of an opening batsman leaves India with little options. They have flown M Vijay back, but he hasn't arrived in England yet. The team management is likely to promote Ajinkya Rahane to open and employ Ambati Rayudu at No.4.

England seek limited-overs reboot | Cricket News | England v India | ESPN Cricinfo

Looks like Vijay won't be available in time, so the only option is to open with Rahane and Dhawan, and play Rayudu in Rahane's middle order slot, I actually would like to see Raina promoted to #4 and Samson play at #5 (instead of Rayudu).

I stopped reading the article halfway through our predicted XI, really weird seeing Umesh in there, Mohit really hasn't done anything to warrant being dropped, and Umesh is a woeful limited overs bowler.

I don't know how many of you remember Dhoni's 183 in Jaipur, during his struggling days. Just saw the video for time pass, but got refreshed by the power hitting of the man !!! [HASHTAG]#GET[/HASHTAG] REFRESHED...

I remember seeing that live, in India, and one moment I remember quite distinctively is when a graphic of highest individual scores by Indians was put up and Dhoni was just ahead of Ganguly because of the *, I couldn't have been happier. :D

Good times, back when I cared about ODIs and in general loved cricket, to think I was only 9 years old...

I don't think Mohit is being dropped, rotated is a better word. Just as Umesh sat out the first match and already had some ppl calling for MSD's head for that alone. Umesh has had a good tour of Aus with the A side so everyone is looking forward to seeing him play. So if he plays that would be great. Lets hope he is a better bowler now.

Also I think that Bhuvi could/should be rested, and both Umesh and Mohit could play or even Dhawal Kulkarni.

If it was a case of rotation, then like you said, they're rotating the wrong player, he just arrived in England for the limited overs leg of the tour.

Wonder if Moeen Ali will get the nod this time .. Curious to see how we tackle him in ODIs[DOUBLEPOST=1409333168][/DOUBLEPOST]

LOL. Don't remember anyone calling for MSD's head over the exclusion of Umesh Yadav. It was disappointing nevertheless

I remember Dhawal Kulkarni playing for India before .. but can anyone recall what speeds he bowls at ? I think he is another one of those Vinay-Praveen-Munaf type who bowls in the 120-130 range.

There was a post by someone I don't know who, but remember reading something to the effect of Your captain is so stupid for not picking Umesh, and has a fetish for mediocre medium pacers and some more stuff along those lines.

Haha. I actually remember that now.

In all fairness, Dhoni does love his medium pacers because they work so well in Indian conditions. And sadly, most of them are mediocre.

Dhoni does have a thing for slow orthodox spinners, but I don;t remember him ever going out of his way to play mediocre medium pacers. Long ago there was some guy who bowled the final over of the world T20 final, thats about the only guy in 7 years of captaincy I could recall. Still doesn't make it a fetish.

Sure the general standard of pace bowling in India is not great, but I don't remember any medium pacer playing for India under MSD who at the time was not part of the top medium pace bowling pool in India.

Ah .. beat me to it. Legendary Jogi (incidentally, a Sharma as well)[DOUBLEPOST=1409335276][/DOUBLEPOST]On the Raina at no.4 suggestion - I would leave him at no.5
Looks like he enjoys it: 'Improved my concentration a lot' - Suresh Raina | Cricket News | England v India | ESPN Cricinfo

Raina said:
"At No. 5 you can control the game," Raina said. "Over the last eight-nine years, I have played at all spots. I have usually had MS [Dhoni] batting with me. I have learnt a lot while batting with him. At CSK, I had Michael Hussey to bat with. Have worked a lot with lefties. Here I have Duncan Fletcher. Stephen Fleming [the Chennai Super Kings coach] is also leftie. Gary [Kirsten] too. Have spent a lot of time talking to Gautam [Gambhir], when I was in Delhi during this break.

"No. 5 is a challenging position. You can control the game from there, at the same time you have high responsibility. You know that after Dhoni and [Ravindra] Jadeja, you don't have much batting. Over the years I have learnt how to bat with the tail. The two innings that I played in the World Cup, they were with the tail. There, I began to believe I can put together good partnerships with the tail. That there is no need to play rash shots with the tail. I have improved slowly."
