India in England Jun-Sept 2014

Can rain save India here? Hope so. Without rain, I dont see even a draw for India here. I do see a few positives for us in the form of Varun Aaron, who has been very impressive with his bowling so far. If he can continue this good work and if Umesh Yadav can come back into reckoning, India can dream of fielding a good pace attack when we tour Australia this year.[DOUBLEPOST=1407510111][/DOUBLEPOST]
unless its going to wash out all the three days i would prefer it not to rain.

Rain right now is good for India. You want as much spice for the bowlers which rain can bring. With England 6 wkts down, we need 4 more for pretty much nothing. Rain could help. And also, instead of using our spinners to give the pacers rest, rain does that work. So let it rain!

Word is that its getting better very fast. Just a few puddles in the outfield, and they are now starting work on the covers. We could perhaps get an hrs play in afterall.[DOUBLEPOST=1407510621][/DOUBLEPOST]Inspection at 4:30 PM local time.

The inspection is at 9pm IST. We could still get a couple of hours play if there is no more rain. As we saw yesterday, light is`nt an issue here if its clear. This partnership has really ruined any chances of a comeback for us. Also, I was surprised with the combination that Dhoni went for after lunch. Pankaj has been expensive and outside of the few deliveries where he is unlucky, he bowls a lot of crap at 125-130 kph. Another 30 runs is all that we have in order to bowl them out.

Yup I did the +530hrs, but its not DST yet :D This bit of rain won't save a test, so either lots of rain, or none at all. This bit of moisture will only make it worse when India bat.

BTW since we are doing nothing here, what are your thoughts on the commentary team. Personally I love to listen to Dravid. Sanjay Manjrekar on the other hand is an expert of stating the obvious. If there is an obvious to be stated, you can be sure that Manjrekar will say it.

Not entirely a bad day for India. England are effectively 85/6. However, even if we dismiss them with a lead of 150, the Indian batting doesn't look strong enough to survive 5 sessions. If only we could redo the first session of Day 1 :(

So much so the pinnacle of cricket that the ICC struggles to get a tournament off the ground and running for the format; 2013 - cancelled, 2017 - cancelled, I'm sure 2021 will follow suit as well.

How a Test championship didn't predate the World Cup is just beyond me.

Even now a test championship isn't feasible due to a match taking five days. The West Inidans were the champions in the 80's early 90's followed by the Aussies, now the South Africans.

If the English can get up to anything above 300 would be a mighty ask of the Indians. Maybe this is the game where Kholi will finally produce a legendary test inns, we all know he is capable of it, if he doesnt fire and England make over 300, game over for the Indians!

Well I am sure the Ashes feels more Important, because England have felt the Euphoria of winning an Ashes, once they win the world cup, I am sure they will realise that an Ashes doesn't come close to winning the world Cup (The 50 Overs, one). The t20 world cup is more a fan service thing than anything.

Also 50 over cricket dead ... really? All major cricket tournaments are still 50 overs ... WC, CT, Asia Cup. You are clearly taking T20 too seriously. T20 is fan service. On a tour no one even cares, what the result was in the T20 fixtures. Its always the Test series, then ODI seris and T20 series, who cares?

50 overs obviously. And yes Individually Test Cricket tests a cricketer most, but as a team, winning the 50 over World Cup is (wwwwwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy x 10000000000) bigger than winning some random test series.

I think ODI form of cricket is dying and has been dying for some years now. Not sure if you have read articles on a proposed 4 inns ODI type format. Ironically enogh the Indians are promoting the T20 brand which in itself is the chief tormentor of the ODI format. Anyway enough of this side talk maybe we can create a thread and discuss it there. Patiently waiting for an inns defeat here!

On a sidenote, ODI cricket will never die unless interest for it dwindles down big time in India. And it will never dwindle down big in India. Right now, ODI is still the most popular form of cricket with the Indian audience. Its the middle ground between 5 days of test cricket and the "all stuffed into 3 hrs" form of T20 cricket. The middle overs need some minor tweaking, but even without tweaks, an ODI gives great entertainment for us who just dont want to watch a highlights package (which is essentially what T20 is) and also for those of us who find it hard to sit through 5 days of cricket with the possibility of no result inspite of 5 days of play.

And its laughable that a bilateral series like the Ashes is referred to as the "pinnacle" for English fans. How does it become the pinnacle when only two teams can compete for it? Total rubbish IMHO. Though India have a major rivalry with Pakistan, beating Pakistan is not the pinnacle for us. The World Cup is the pinnacle. If a test championship comes in, it will be the pinnacle for us (yes there are some fanatics in India too who are happy with us beating Pakistan in a WC match even if we do not go on to win the tournament, but that is a massive minority right now)

Now thats the pinnacle of cricket for me, nothing beats a clash between these teams.

I dont call myslef a fan of English or Australian cricket but with all the traditions and history associated with the ashes I can understand why the fans of both sides enjoy the ashes immensely. To think otherwise would be an insult to them.

I agree that ODI is still top in India and thats why in one of my posts on this thread I posted that it was Ironic the Indians are killing ODI the most with the advent of T20 cricket. Sometimes I think all the euphoria about the ODI world cup is because it is rare, occurs every four years and I am certain if India loss the next two worldcups ( which may well happen), ODI cricket will surely lose popularity in India and by your calculations die!

lol we can wait another 28 years too you know, I dont understand this mentality that indians are following cricket only when team wins, i find that insulting we have been following cricket for a century whether team wins or looses and it will continue.

With all due respect to ashes, its long tradition and its memories close to the heart of an ENG or aussie fan, it cant claim the title pinnacle of cricket. The word pinnacle is reserved for something ultimate which tests a team across conditions and with other teams not just a test series with one team coming on top of the other team alternatively at times however good the clash between them may be.
