India tour of New Zealand - Jan to Feb 2014

New Zealand have obviously been a better team. Be it ODI's where they stopped Kohli's second innings spectacular run , the first, or be it here, dismissing Pujara in both innings cheaply, a rare sight again!

Our batting was hopeless in the first innings barring Rohit Sharma's knock, and bowlers looked clueless after restricting them to 30/3. So it was basically the second innings where we showed some fight. But tbh, batsmen are all to blame for.

Also tbf, New Zealand bowling fast bowling attack is really good, if not at par with the best.

People will criticise the decisions which went against their teams, only to prove a worthless point and bring forward the DRS discussions. Some decisions were bad, some were fine, some being absolutely fantastic.

In the end, what a game of cricket :clap That's what matters. Hope to see another thriller.

Really well said mate, you've summed it up perfectly.

India in their last 10 away test series have not won a single match. Not one.
You are comparing two different generations of cricketers there, The team that lost(first 8 matches) was in transition phase, The last few matches SA and NZ are pretty encouraging for a young team, all the matches were close and well played .The bowling department has issues but in a year are so this will become one of the very best sides .

And for the regular comments against BCCI what they are doing is totally not fair agreed , but what other boards and the respective fans have to learn is what BCCI is today is because of self sustainability and support of fans.
First Fans of these nations have to show up for the Test matches, more viewership on media and support their team and board so that they are not dependent on other boards, this is why ENG AUS and IND have the say they have in the meetings.

So if you want your Boards to have a better say in matters then its your responsibility to support your teams properly and encourage the sport more in the nation.Thats the only way it can happen, not pointing fingers.Other wise the Breadwinners will always try to have more say (more biased) in the matters plain and simple.
It was really sad to see the turnout at Auckland.Hoping for a cracker of a second game and hopefully better turnouts.
From what i have seen NZ team is doing their duty ,now its time for their fans to back it up.

What's a Bangladesh? ;)

EDIT:

Fact Checks for you Mega; India in their last 10 away test series have not won a single match. Not one. Before you start labeling better teams as cheats, maybe take a close look at the facts. Hopefully it takes a good ol' schlocking from a "second tier" test nation to humble up the BCCI and make them realize they a) don't rule world cricket and b) don't get to decide who wins before a series starts. "Rankings" are meaningless. Best team wins on the day. India turned up treating this series as a joke, have been beaten and humbled every step of the way.

This is wonderful thing for Test cricket, whether you realize it or not. Enjoy your IPL's, we'll take the moral and physical international victories against a bullying cashed-up cricketing nation who can't win a match that doesn't involve guns for hire from around the world to bulk up a corrupt domestic 20/20 competition that's ruining young, test players all over the world.

West Indies, Bangladesh, South Africa and Sri Lanka are all on the phone to NZ right now thanking us for reminding the world any side can beat anyone.

That's the way cricket should be.

Best. Post. Ever.

Kudos

NZ fans are disgusting over this. Every time Indian cricket fans say something in defence of their team, they raise the BCCI Bogey.

Please don't put us all in the same boat, I would like to think I've been pretty fair in discussing the game. Just like I'm not going to say all Indian fans are sore losers because the majority of your fans are great, there has only been the odd comment on other forums here or there that I really don't agree with.

Agreed. But it was pretty hard to understand why every other team wants to blame BCCI for everything, including trying to influence results.

I don't agree with a lot of what BCCI does, but then it's clear that the big three (India, England and Australia) are the money spinners of the game and that they will naturally want to call the shots in administrating the game at the highest levels.

Am really surprised about the complaint in previous pages on DRS needed or not. When you deserve to loose, you will loose. End of Story.

Through out this tour, I see no hard work or efforts being done by us. In this test, It was only the third innings in this match that deserves credit for India, otherwise pure domination by Kiwis through out. When you bowled pathetic, gave away the wickets in pathetic way - expecting a win in the end is just way too much of optimistic expectation! I personally feel good about this loss, because it makes sure that Dhoni & other undeserved people don't get away with one innings efforts to continue being horrible again.

Saved me some typing, but I'll just reiterate this point, the team that lost 8-0 away to England and Australia is not this team, this teams overseas journey starts at South Africa away.

I'm already seeing the Dhoni should no longer be Test captain paradox hitting the interwebs, so again, the realistic goal set at the start of these overseas tours was to replicate something England did in their bid to overcome their spin troubles (3-0 humiliation in the UAE vs Pakistan, 1-1 draw vs Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka and 2-1 win over India in India), that's the goal and with the 3 overseas Tests thus far, I can cite significant improvement.

Is cricket not popular in New Zealand? or is it only test cricket that people don't watch ... stadium was empty even on saturday and sunday and I think most of the people that were on the stadium were Indians .

From what I have heard its $40 for just one day, plus Eden Park doesn't look great to watch test cricket at. The crowds at the Basin this week should be really good though.

Also forgot that the rugby league nines are on at Eden Park this coming weekend and is apparently sold out, so people probably saved their cash for that. A lot of excuses I know :p

Not to be rude or anything but you sound like MSD giving excuses at the post match presentation :D , but is that ticket price same for all the venues in NZ ? here in India you can get ticket as cheap as 7-8 dollars .

I've said it way back in 2012 that Dhoni doesn't cut it as Test captain. Proof my blog post here: Hari's Corner - Indian Cricket needs a passionate Test captain

Fact is even when Dhoni was the most hyped up persona in limited overs cricket, many of us recognized his shortcomings in the longer format. And it was about a home series I was writing about... not overseas...

Is there any effort at all to improve the quality of umpiring standards among umpires?
Yes, there is. There's a reason why we have the elite panel. Their right decision percentage is taken into account.

Is there a system in place to evaluate umpires performance and if it is, how effective are they?
They basically take all the right decisions over all decisions and multiply by a 100 to get a % correct decisions per umpire. If it drops too low, they're removed from the elite panel.

Maybe we can start looking to the enhancement of the decision making process of the umpire, and if necessary, work on methods to enhance their performance on field. Until some other technology better than the DRS is found, we can atleast improve the umpire.
All of this is really theoretical. The DRS is a great system compared to just having on-field umpires. It is far more accurate. With time, it will also improve. However, it is the best that we have. The processes you describe is pretty much already in practice. The DRS is superior to umpires, end of story.

The main reason the BCCI opposes the DRS technology is because of the cost of operating the technology per match. That number is ~$60,000 per test match (around 10k-12k per day). As the BCCI is run by money hungry penny pinching pigs, it opposes the DRS. They know that the Indian public won't stop watching cricket, so they're willing to decrease it's quality - just like the "L" advertising during the matches that are often seen on Indian cricket channels. There are simply too many Indian fans and cricket holds basically a monopoly in the country. They can decrease the quality and no one will stop watching.

The best part about all of this is that their mascot - Sachin Tendulkar - publicly stated that he's against the DRS. I love Tendulkar, just like any Indian, but throughout his career, he never opposed the BCCI. He never questioned them. He was the one player that could rise above all, and say that things are being conducted in an awful manner without any consequences, but alas, he didn't. The worst incidence of this is how the BCCI has basically gagged all of the players - that they cannot say anything against the BCCI and a few other topics. Tendulkar was the one player that could've publicly been against the gag because he was above everything. He wouldn't lose his spot. Imagine the implications that gagging players holds for future players. It's completely anti-union. There is no transparency. Sorry to say, but the BCCI is completely a money making monopoly.

RE: The lack of a crowd. They were asking $30 per day for basic seats along with not doing their usual half-price-for-final-day pricing at the gate. They also usually let everyone in for free if there's going to be a result. The Wellington Rugby Sevens was on this weekend, which means a tonne of bums at home. Couple that with Aucklanders consistently being shit supporters of Test Cricket in NZ the crowd was about what could be expected. You'll get a great crowd at the Basin and I would dare say Auckland is probably in it's last throws as a test venue, but i've said that before. Shameless showing by cricket fans in Auckland, but that has plenty to do with the pricing just being a bit silly for test cricket in NZ...

...mostly due to India cancelling the third test in the series because, greed.

What an epic. I ended up going to 9/12 sessions, so good!

I'm looking at the prices online for the next test match, it says $43 for one day and $93 for a match pass to all days. Its a shame really, I went to a heap of games as a kid and now I know why, under 16s are only $13. They would probably make far more money if they made the tickets around $20.

Hopefully we get a game half as good here in Wellington, was your match pass really $50?
