I think MSD's place is the biggest conundrum in our lineup.
Dhoni played the kind of innings he has been playing for the past 3-4 years now. These 4 games have made 1 thing clear: Dhoni needs to be moved to no. 4 ASAP and Rahane should only be there as the backup opener.
And if I were being honest, MSD deserves to be in this lineup only for his keeping and to an extent, his on field acumen. His batting is not really suitable for no.4 either. I cannot see him playing the sheet anchor role, because he is so bad at rotating the strike in the first 20-25 deliveries he plays and forces the other batsmen to take unneeded risks. He is basically in the team for his keeping, which would work if it was our Test lineup. In ODI's you cannot really play a specialist keeper. It reminds me of Ganguly's ending days of captaincy when people wished that he would just be an off-field captain because he was a very good leader but completely out of place in the batting lineup.
And this question becomes even more uncomfortable in a T20 setup

Gambhir instead of Dhawan? Why ? The World Cup is happening in England. Rohit will be a walking stick. He is the one who could be replaced possibly
Are you really serious? You want Shikhar Dhawan out of the team, and that too for an ICC tournament? You tell Dhawan that it is an ICC tournament and he has a 'beast mode' switch in him that he will TURN ON instantly. Also, Dhawan has been batting pretty well in recent times to keep his place in the ODI side. It is actually Rohit Sharma who after his consistent failures in the ongoing South Africa ODI's, who should be in a shaky spot.
And you do know that the World Cup is happening in England, right? Three spinners (Krunal, Ashwin and Chahal/Kuldeep) in the XI is massive overkill. There could be games where even 2 spinners would be a luxury. Krunal Pandya is unlikely to play the World Cup if he is not blooded right now in ODI cricket. And I do not see him in ODI's first. He needs to come in the T20 route and then think of ODI's. I would play Krunal more in subcontinental conditions. And I dont see Ashwin in the World Cup unless his IPL leg spin experiment works spectacularly well that Kohli wants him back. Jadeja would be a better option (backup option) because of his batting, exceptional fielding and tight bowling. We already have the wristies to attack.

Ashwin's Leg Spin experiment will work
He is playing good in Vijay Hazare Trophy and Ashwin is also a good batsman
Why do you want to replace Krunal Pandya by Deepak Hooda ??
Krunal is better batsman and bowler than Deepak Hooda

From what I understand, someone used a racial slur on Tahir and Tahir complained to the security. Security asked him to accompany them into the stands to identify the culprit. And then this scene happened. I don't really see Tahir to be the kind of guy to go into the stands and rile up spectators without a good reason

Just like when he was the captain, India's losses, Mumbai's traffic and global warming are all Dhoni's fault. It was also fashionable then to be critical of him for selecting blokes from CSK.
To clarify, I respect a lot of your posts and enjoy them as well. But, this one is far out south. What could MS have done last innings? He started with a six and was striking at above 100 and then Iyer got out. Pandya soon followed and India were in peril of being bowled out and not playing 50.
Dhoni is not just in the side for the things you mentioned. Mark my words, if he's given the 4 spot and given time to build an innings he can still go at the death. I've not seen Dhoni ask for a lot of things and he clearly said that he wants to bat at 4 when he gave up the captaincy. But, this management is very far up Kohli's rear end and Shastri smells roses there. There have been so many instances that Pandya has come into bat ahead of MS and it's absolutely laughable. It's the third year of Kohli's captaincy and for most of it Shastri has been coach and we are clueless about 4, 5, 6 and 7.
