India won the toss and elected to bat first on a normal wicket hoping to put on a good score.
DeFreitas struck twice for England in his opening spell, claiming both Tendulkar and Ganguly lbw cheaply.
Sidhu and Shastri were repairing the damage in a 38 run stand off 45 balls when drinks were taken.
