New Zealand in England May - June 2013

C'mon NZ - just keep batting. Prob best put 600 on the board before declaring ;)

:D

I think they probably had enough at lunch, I predicted what Michael Yawn would say when he started off by saying the kiwis should hit out at 6-8 runs an over after lunch - that he'd be looking at a 500 target.

I think the stat is something like four times in history out of TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY FIVE targets has a side batting last chased down 400+ . I would like to know how many times the bowling side has set far more than necessary and run out of time to bowl their opposition out when 7-9 wickets down.

The kiwis should win from here, a rather devastating blow to England who maybe got a bit complacent on tour or simply playing in India then here was too much for them to adjust to.

Not clever from England 1st innings, not much better 2nd innings. Nightwatchman approach fails, and what's two wickets to WILLIAMSON about?!??! 12 career wickets now, four in this series.

Well this will be our first series loss to the kiwis since 1999. This would be only the NINTH Test won by the kiwis, the first series won by New Zealand in New Zealand since 83/84 and only their fourth series win ever over England.

Pretty terrible performance from England all round but this will be a very deserved series win for NZ. What odds would you have got for England to win both limited overs series and lose the Tests?

----------

Whenever England start trying to force the pace, read play like the dominant Aussie sides of the noughties, they end up gifting their wickets away. Their success with the bat has been built on wearing down the opposition and setting platforms for their lower order to up the tempo.

Agree with Owzatt on one thing for sure. Broad is not currently a test number 8!

Forget this test match as a whole, England were absolutely battered taking into account just this solitary day of cricket - a day they needed to dictate terms most. NZL scoring a run a ball 200 for the loss of just 3 wickets to England's 90-4 at an old school scoring rate. Pathetic.

Cricinfo:

Alex: "and with that, Auckland university attendance for the 26th of March has just plummeted"

Bet Callum would rather attend uni though :spy

It's just a different side to the one that went to South Africa. New openers are scoring runs which we haven't had in a long time. Solid but young middle order with a lot of potential, McCullum back at his rightful destructive spot of #6. Southee back into the attack, Martin in for the horrible Patel.

From our lowest low to rebound like this has been great. Pretty young side too so the future is looking OK. Bracewell will be fighting with Wagner for the 3rd seaming role, and maybe McClenaghan too.

New Zealand scored just above run a ball compared to England scoring just above run a over. Just the match we expected between #8 and #2 teams.

When you're 350 ahead you can play a lot more positively. Fulton did the hard work the previous night and stayed in to reap the rewards. 35 off 23 overs that first night. McCullum only knows one way, and it's coming off more often that not lately.

Where I thought McCullum was particularly good was in attacking Panesar when he tried to bowl the Gilo-line (rough outside RH's leg stump). In the past that line has stifled runs but McCullum just has so many shots he was able to score just as freely.

I feel england are probably missing pietersen more than they usually would here. He is the sort of person that, if he'd got going, would have attacked on this pitch, spread the field, got runs on the board.

credit to NZ though, fulton's been immense and their bowlers have been a lot better.

We've been poor, but I'd expect us to get it right in the home series. Pitches that do more and batsmen with more confidence from early season games should make a major difference.

As for this series, time to start the rain dance. :spy

Is it just me or does like England take 1 step forward and 2 step backwards all the time?

Win 4-0 v India in ENG - becomes #1 Test side
Lose 0-3 v Pakistan in the UAE - major questions on their credibility
Draw 1-1 v Sri Lanka in SL - improvement from the whitewash in Pakistan
Lose 0-2 v South Africa in ENG - lost their #1 rank
Win 2-1 v India in IND - they've done it, they've finally mastered the turning ball!

Ofc, now they're looking at a 0-1 loss to New Zealand in NZ, and if my math is right, that should see them lose their #2 rank...

Lose 0-2 v South Africa in ENG - battle for #1, remain #2

England lost their number 1 ranking only after their 2-0 series loss at home to South Africa. Came mighty close to losing it in SL, needing a win in the second and final test (one they successfully did).

Needed only a series draw against South Africa to retain the #1 ranking as well - one they failed. Since then, they've been #2, and will go #3 with a loss at Auckland today.

Played 18 Won 5 Lost 8 Drawn 5 since their 4-0 drubbing of India.

*I included today's defeat at Auckland beforehand in those stats

Pitches that do more will only help the bowlers that do the right things with the ball. Attacking the stumps and bowling a fuller length would be a good start, and that is what the Kiwi bowlers do consistently.

It amazed me when Broad looked perplexed at the suggestion that he and the other bowlers in the side had bowled shorter than the Kiwi's. Is he thick or what?

Everything Broad has achieved in his career so far tells me that yes, he does seem a bit thick.
