^Yeah the team was a mess, like War complained a little earlier...but it doesn't matter who they play if the batting is going to be so awful as that...Honestly, that was pitiful stuff.
But who are these specialist that are doing so well at the moment, that demand selection in the Australian ODI team in the likely positions, the likes of Maxwell, M Marsh or Christian would play?
In my opinion of the best AUS ODI XI, i don't see any specialist batsman or bowler who demands selections.
I can buy the 'no good batsmen around' part, but I think there are LOTS of pace bowling options that could be tried. Starc, Pattinson and Cummins are all there to be chosen. Hilfenhaus, McKay and Johnson are all better than Christian. Digging deeper we can find more too: Bollinger, Harris, McDermott etc.
I can see why Maxwell is picked - he's at least got potential (with bat...can't see anything special with ball), but I can't see how Christian's bowling will improve much, and he hardly gets a bat at #8. I hated James Hopes and Ian Harvey getting picked as #8s when they rarely ever got to bat while much better bowlers were in the wings eg. think of the pace bowling stocks being wasted in Aussie cricket while Harvey was playing at #8...
And of those 3, I think Christian is the worst bowler. I just can't see the appeal
Grr...anyway I could go on...but that's not the main problem
Top order ODI batting is woeful and if I were chairman of selectors I would be making some changes this summer. Watson, Clarke, M.Hussey are the planks to build around (Hussey for one more year). Maxwell and Bailey deserve to be retained. Warner, D.Hussey and Wade I would drop -each of them have been below par in EVERY ONE of the 3 overseas ODI tours and I think it's time the message was sent out that no one has a 'right' to a spot in the team. Has to be earned.
