Pakistan and Australia in the UAE August-September 2012

Shafiq needs to make use of his starts. Fact is Pakistanis have yet to learn how to convert 20s and 30s into match-winning scores.

Nice stuff by Starc he is coming along nicely. Bailey is making a good fist of things, will be good to see more of his finishing ability as that 6 spot could be his then.

If Kamran Akmal was opening , then surely Starc would not have taken 5 , and about Bailey , it was the Misbah's fault to make two seemers play , 3 seemers could've done a early breakthrough . Pakistan selection :facepalm

A ship of failure sinks on a sea of excuses.

I don't think they need Johnson either unless they bat him at 7 and get shot of Christian. I realise this isn't a fair comment, it might just be his face, but for such an ordinary player Christian looks so arrogant.

Maxwell has some way to go before being a more than average spin bowler, but I would think they'll give him a fair few matches. Look how many chances Steve Smith has had.

Yeah Maxwell is a long way off a competent spinner. Dave Hussey is probably just as good right now. Australia might be able to do the old Hussey/Clarke/Maxwell cobble together 10 overs thing, but it really just creates another issue for when Watson comes back. He is your 'proper' all-rounder and makes Christian redundant really.

The other thing to think about is Doherty's development. He might turn into a reasonable ODI spinner, but if the selectors are determined to avoid him and pick Christian, how the hell is he meant to improve?? Perfect chance to give him a shot in foreign conditions in a series that very few people in Australia will be watching ie. no pressure to win.

Again batting laid us down but now its predictable we cant get pass 220 or even 200 and rely totally on bowling but ajmal was great but again there were no pressure on aussie batsman to score aggresively. Now going in 2odi our only thinking should be put anything above 230 or more atleast it will challenge aussies in uae conditions specially ajmal

Aren't you people blasting Pakistan way too much for just one batting failure ? What needs to be considered here is they have not played much in the last few months and may be rusty. Do, wait for the next match and see how they perform before dishing out the dirt onto them.

Uhm, no. The batting has been underperforming for awhile now, some changes need to be made.

Well with Watto we also have to cater for the fact that in the future, his bowling workload cannot also be depended on.

So whether its Christian or M Marsh, i think having another quick-bowling all-rounder has much future in the best AUS ODI XI.

Lets not forget Doherty was pretty crap in England, so regardless of the fact that this is a low key tour, on current form, he did not deserve to be picked as a spinner.

Well yea his bowling has much work do before he can his bowling can be totally depended on to bowl 10 overs. But until we get back an ODI spinner as good as Hogg again, Maxwell should remain.

Plus if we think of the 2015 world cup and champions trophy next year, the conditions probably won't need a front line-spinner.

Best ODI team if all are fit and available:

Warner
Wade
Watson
Clarke
D Hussey
M Hussey
Maxwell
M Marsh/Christian
McKay
Starc
Bollinger

M Marsh/Christian
White
Bailey/Ferguson/S Marsh
Pattinson/Cummins

Yeah I realise he won't last forever, but at the moment I bet Clarke trusts Watson with ball more than those 2, and it showed last summer when both Watson and Christian played. Christian was always the last bowler turned to, and really only to give him the chance to roll his arm over. My view is to only start selecting those guys when they are actually needed.

I'm definitely no Doherty fan, but I'd love to know how Australia expects to develop a spinner when they won't give one a go. Nothing like crushing a guy's confidence by playing Maxwell or Dave Hussey ahead of him.

Plus EVERYONE had a crap tour of England, bar perhaps McKay.

My opinion? Screw Maxwell & Marsh/Christian, instead play Wade at #7 and include an extra specialist batsman instead of pissing around with all-rounders, whether it's White, Shaun Marsh, Ferguson, Bailey, Phil Hughes whoever... Watson, Clarke and D.Hussey are good enough as a 5th bowler. Bowling lineup could be anyone to be honest...Starc looks one for the future, and I still like playing devil's advocate by supporting Mitch Johnson - in part because he's a pretty good bat at #8.

I just favour the idea of starc and johnson being 20 overs of something batsmen don't usually have to deal with.
