I wouldn't read too much into it to be honest. I don't understand how Rana Naved was ruled out for the entire test series, and now he is being tipped for a comeback?
He was originally ruled out because the Sussex guys thought he was going to need surgery on his groin. PCB specialists ruled otherwise. I'd still be wary of playing him though. Asif on the other hand didn't sustain a serious injury.

I stand by the fact the captain should be at 3.

Strauss has been an opener all throughout his test career. We shouldn't change that now and Cook is adjusted to three. And last year Bell really fitted in a 4 didn't he!

Ian Bell looks World Class at 6, but he looked like a rabbit at 4 last year. I think the quality of bowlers has to come into account though.

I have to agree with Sureshot here, Strauss and Trescothick average 52 together; They shouldn't be split up.

Especially not by moving Strauss, Trescothick does need to find form though.

On the Bell argument, I think he's got more used to Test Cricket in the last year. Up to the Ashes, he'd hardly played, apart from an odd game here or there and the Bangladesh series. I think he'll settle into a long term number 5 for us, with Collingwood maybe being pushed out for the return of Flintoff.

The fact that both of those players have both had spells out of form in the last couple of months and yet they still average over 50 is testament to how good they are.

i think having Strauss with him, Tresco has a license to play a few shots, because Strauss can also play a few which can bring boundries, on many occasions these two have notched up 150 runs, and then the third man comes in, Vaughan, and it gives him confidance, or shud do.

England have a habit of collapsing at important times

It would be harsh on Colly and he is one of the best fielders in the game, only other I can see dropping is Cook. But he'd play well in Aus.

I'd love Colly to play in Australia, he looks like teh kind of player where the likes of Warne and McGrath sledging him won't deter him, and maybe even spur him on.

lol, Warne and Mcgraph have gotta watch themselves this year, if there blood pressure raises too much at thier age, itll have bad effects on them :p

I'm really sick of the Pakistan team managment now, one day they say Akthar will play, next day he's not playing. One day Farhat and Butt were suppose to open, next day you see Akmal opening. Then they send back Asif home, and now they call him back again saying he might play. Now they send back Taufeeq and Butt back home.. and bring in Mo Hafeez, what difference is he gonna make in 1 test ? he failed against the mighty westindies A in practice match. They should stay as 1 collective unit, and give more chances to the openers, theyre making it worse by changing the combination every single test!

Akhtar would've still played if he had played in the second rained out match against West Indies A, that way he'd have had some more match practice. They sent Asif and Naved back home to be able to treat him. His treatment is done and he is fit to play now, which is why he is back in England. I completely agree with you on the openers situation, they need to be given more chances as a pair before chopping and changing.

Cricinfo are reporting that Naved-ul-Hasan and Asif are both in the frame after bowling well in the nets, with Hafeez and Farhat confirmed as openers. I'd like to have seen Afridi and Farhat open the batting, as I think Afridi can give a team that start it needs and lets face it, he couldn't do much worse. Factor in his bowling which has been decent in the matches that he has played and for me, he should be starting.

Afridi lacked any maturiy and/or common sense in his 2 tests earlier in the series.

I wouldn't mind playing both Naved and Asif, no match practice and I'm happy, especially if they are in the field for 5 sessions.
