I can't believe people are suggesting that Afridi should open, he's a liability anywhere he bats and opening with him is like starting with a wicket down already. I'm all for Asif and Naved playing, Trescothick has a habit of murdering half-fit bowlers. Just look at what he did to McGrath last year.

Yeah, I must have missed the part where the other openers were putting on 100 for the first wicket. It might help if you think about it before posting utter rubbish.

First of all, is there any need to call my post utter rubbish? And second of all, the openers havn't put on 100 because they are facing one of the best opening attacks in the world, and Hoggard and Harmison are actually getting them out, wheras Afridi will almost certainly throw his wicket away. Australia's openers struggled against Hoggard and Harmsion, as did New Zealand's, as did the West Indies' and as did South Africa's.

I believe Mohammad Asif one day will be as good as McGrath, If you have seen him bowl against India, amazing, line and length. If he plays we gonne win the last test.

Akhtar would've still played if he had played in the second rained out match against West Indies A, that way he'd have had some more match practice. They sent Asif and Naved back home to be able to treat him. His treatment is done and he is fit to play now, which is why he is back in England. I completely agree with you on the openers situation, they need to be given more chances as a pair before chopping and changing.

I dont think he would have played even if he took part in second match against Windies A, because I read that he had a fever, so thats why he was ruled out

I think Afridi should open in this one. Our regular openers arent doing anything great are they ? With Afridi trying to score fast there is always a chance that he could atleast give us a start of 50-0, with our regular openers there is no chance of that happening.

Well The Oval is bound to be a great batting track with spin coming into it at the end.

I think Afridi is a very immature cricketer but a talent.

What have they got to lose, if they do play him?

Asif is a good bowler and a hot prospect, but he isn't anywhere near the McGrath bracket. Until he proves himself in England, Australia and South Africa, he can't be fully judged.

Nobody said he's as good as McGrath. That'd be ridiculous. But if you had seen his spell against Sri Lanka at Kandy, you'd understand where the comparisons originated.

That's where the McGrath comparison came from Nightprowler.

I have seen his spell against Sri Lanka, and his bowling against India, and I agree with you that he is very good. If he bowls well in England, South Africa and Australia, then I will really take note. But for now, he remains as a bowler who has a lot of potential, rather than a World Class bowler.

like McGrath can never be the Wasim ;).

McGrath was better by far in my opinion, but that doesn't belong in this thread, and the last thing I want to do is cause a Akram vs McGrath debate.

Iqbal gets a game does he? Looks like KP can re-aquaint their rivalry.

I don't see anything wrong with his post, except that if Asif plays we're definitely gonna win. He said that Asif will be someday be as good as McGrath, I have the same opinion. The statement implies that Asif has a lot of work to do.

We could waste a whole thread on that topic. :p

I didn't say there was anything wrong with it, he's entitled to his opinion. I just quoted that to show you where the McGrath compariosn originated from.

I think that Chapple is miles ahead of Glen McGrath. :p
