I don't agree. The team needs to be picked for the future so we have a chance to win the 2011 world cup. What's the point of picking a guy whose going to retire in two seasons when a younger guy could be getting the experience.
Incidentally I hear that Ian Botham has been in good form against his grandkids at the park - time for a recall?

I agree with you to a certain extent, but for the World Cup you need to pick your best players, regardless of age. I'm all for blooding the youngsters, but we need the best players in our side.

Anyway my team :)

Trescothick
Strauss
Joyce
Pietersen
Cook
Blackwell
Read
Mahmood
Gough
Harmison
Broad

As you might know, I don't really like ODI cricket anyway!

and had Mal Loye been one of our best players over the past few seasons I'd agree but he hasn't. He hasn't even been in the team, this is not the time to give him his debut whatever all the Lancastrians might think.

So you're saying that the ECB should give a younger player who is not as good as an older player like Loye should be selected because the younger player will be there for 2011 but Loye won't be. You must've already given up on England's chances in the upcoming world cup.

is blackwell fit?

thought he was crocked?

collingwood will 100% be in there..best fielder..useful bowler..

Fair enough, but I still think he's good enough for a game.

And I too thought Blackwell was injured.

I'm saying we don't know how good Loye is at ODI level and if he does turn out to be amazing he still won't be there in 5 years time. As it is the chances are it will take him a while to settle in if he does become any good anyway.
Therefore lets find someone with the potential to be that good who will then have 7/8 years before him.

Part of this comes from my view that ODI cricket is a waste of time as anything other than a way of blooding players for the test team.

Re: Blackwell - stick Collingwood in instead then.

At this moment in time, I'd go with:

Tresothcik
Prior
Strauss
Pietersen
Collingwood
Joyce
Dalrymple
Masceranhas (Sp?)
Johnson
Broad
Tremlett

Richard Johnson?
Interesting choice if so.
Apparently Shane Warne is always wondering why Dimi Mascarenhas isn't in the England team.

hmmmmm.......

So it's OK to pick old players who are going to retire in two seasons from counties other than Lancashire is it?

Touch? :D
I actually feel the situation is different for batsmen and bowlers.
Someone like Gough has not only played for England before and is a proven performer but can really help some of the younger newer bowlers with his enormous experience. Not the same for a batsman especially one who would be making his debut.

you should play darren gough. he has been selected in the champions trophy 30, so why not see how it goes with him before the champions trophy

But in the past you said you wouldn't pick Chapple because of age.

I'm not sure if this should continue be discussed in this thread or should move away to its own thread, but one of the news channels in India, Times Now, has ignited controversy farther by having an exclusive interview with Shahid Afridi.

While I haven't watched the interview myself, Afridi has been quoted as saying, "You cannot win without ball tampering." and that "it should be allowed to a certain degree by the ICC"; both statements have left me... speechless. :P

And international experience. The situation is different once the player has been in the England team for a long time as Gough has (plus as you noticed he doesn't play for Lancs!!! :p)

Yup, if you can find the article, link it and start a new thread.
If he really did say that then I think Afridi may just have signed his international cricket death warrant.

Either Johnson or Kirtley really would suffice for the bowling. I like Mascarenhas though, if we have him in the team, with the keeper standing upto the stumps, then I think he could do a good job. Plus he's a decent striker of a cricket ball if we're in trouble by then. Best pace allrounder in the country after Flintoff and maybe Collingwood, imo.
