Pro Evolution Soccer 2009

I know you are talking about me, so:

1) I'm not a FIFA fan, I am a football fan who plays video games.
2) I've not labelled anyone a fanboy
3) I didn't start the discussion
4) I don't want the full game as the demo put me off the game completely as it seemed so unrealistic to me, and nobody has said the full game is drastically different to the demo.
5) I know I havn't played the game enough to write a full review.

I was actually talking about Simbazz. He shares the certain superiority Fifa fans feel they have over PES fans. Claiming PES is better than Fifa in a PES thread is by no means the same as going to a Fifa thread, calling the game crap and its supporter's fanboys.

All I have done is reply to posts that are aimed at me, or I have tried to ask people to stop talking about FIFA. I'm not provoking anyone to post about FIFA, far from it in fact.

None of these posts were aimed at before you joined the discussion and how is calling Pro better than Fifa off-topic?

Real Men, and Men who have large Genitals use vertical camera, or at least that's what i keep telling myself. ;):D

Because this is the PES thread, not the PES v FIFA thread and all bringing FIFA into the discussion does is create a pointless argument - this thread should be about discussion of PES, be it positive or negative.

Surely comparing thing with other things is the only way to see what is positive and negative about things.

Just realised that you can play as one player in the Demo. Rooney :D

There's nothing at all wrong with comparisons. You think Fifa is better? fair enough. I don't go to the Fifa thread and try and explain why I think it isn't. I have my opinion and I confine it to the appropriate thread. Maybe you should do the same.

Right, enough of the Fifa-PES chat lads, time for the important stuff, abit of a review from yours truely :p

Right, I was massively hopeful when watching videos for the new PES. Even though 2008 was far from perfect, it was still a very enjoyable football game, realistic? I don't think so, but it was bloody fun to play even with the bugs. I was hopeful that 2009 would be a more ironed out, better play, and in some ways it is, but I still walk away a little dissappointed when I'm finished with a PES 2009 session. It may be because I've not played it enough as of yet, or it could be that I need to change the camera angle, but there's just something about the game that's just not as fluid as previous PES games.

The old fun of Pro Evolution Soccer was the fast, fluid and flowing football, allowing you to play slick, passing football, with pacy wingers creating loads of goals. This game seems to have taken a massive backward step, on the default camera mode anyway. The play is abit glitchy, the player sprints are very strange, and Konami seem to have stolen some of EA's button response issues from the 2008 Fifa title. It's still possible to make mazy runs every now and then, but you can't just run at a defender and beat them with ease anymore. It may make it a far more realistic game, but in terms of fun factor it's greatly reduced.

It's not all bad though, I think the shooting's been tweaked nicely, and now works incredibly well, allowing you to hit some fantastic shots from outside the area once you get used to the game, and manage to find space on the somewhat cramped pitch. The graphics are also simply superb, there's no other word for it. The stadiums look fantastic, the player faces are leagues above Fifa's and the CL graphics really suit the game immensely. The passing is also typical PES, very fluid, very easy to ping cross-field passes and play a nice passing game, again once space is found.

Overall, PES is an improvement in areas, but in some areas I actually think the game's gone backwards. I'm not going to touch on the lack of licensed clubs, the complete lack of German clubs or the poorly out of date roster, as they've already announced a patch to fix this, but there are areas that I definitely feel PES needs to improve. I always thought that PES had to try and make itself more realistic, and that appears to be what Konami have attempted in this version, but I just don't think it suits the game. The game feels slower than it should be, the pitch feels too small, and the game just doesn't flow anywhere near as well as it should, or as well as previous PES games have.

I'm sure i'll get into the game as I play more, and I must point out that this is a review after only playing a small number of games. I just feel that there are areas that aren't as good as previous versions of PES, but as I mentioned at the start, some of these could be to do with the Camera Angle, something I will play around with when I play the game again tonight. To conclude, a decent play, but one that still requires improvement, I'm hopeful for next season, and look forward to what Konami can come up with.

Fair play mate, i respect your review, and i agree with you on a number of points, especially in my first day with the game.

All i can say is, give it time, and try new things with regards to the camera etc and it should open up new avenues within the game.

Although i never posted it, after a few hours of gaming on Pes 09 i was pretty sceptical, it plays and feels so different from PEs 08 which i mastered offline on top player.

But as i slowly adjusted to the game in my old age (not as old as Kev) i have grown to enjoy it probably more than any other Pes EVER.

Now, this may not be the case with you, not everyone has the same tastes, but if you see light at the end of the tunnel (as far as pes 09 is concerned) then stick with it and let us know how you get on.

Well, as I read this I've just loaded my Champions League save but changed the camera angle to "wide" and now that I've got a better perspective of the pitch it does seem to be far easier to play. There does seem to be one major flaw though, no matter who your winger is, be it Ronaldo, Nani, Giggs, Walcott, whoever, the opposing defenders always seem to be quicker and always seem to get across to you before you have chance to do anything on the wing. Slightly frustrating, but I'm sure it's again something that I'll get used to.

Also, is there a way to get forward players to make runs? They don't actually seem to do anything atm :?

Yep this is true, may i ask what level you are playing on? I have a theory that it only affects top player, but i have only used top player so i could be wrong.

It does not always happen, especially if you are using a super quick player. It does however happen sometimes.

I have a theory, i think the game use dribbling speed for the attacker, and pace for the player without the ball, hence more often than not the defender catches the player up.

However, you quickly learn to just run in front of the defender, in effect blocking him off. Now, said defender has two choices, foul you and risk a yellow, and possibly a red (cpu does take this option at times) or just try and shackle you by putting you off, or getting alongside/in front of you and nicking the ball from you.

Providing your player is not a weakling, you learn to just block then off and run in front of them, just don't let them get level or in front of you.
