South Africa in England

That's at Bumbles blog right? Haha that was funny. Not the first time SA have talked themselves up and failed to perform either.

England managed to make hard work early on, but despite some being critical of the approach of the openers - Strauss in particular - that partnership saw off the new ball and made the innings of Pietersen and Bell easier.

Vaughan's place has to be in question, England have not scored 400 1st innings in any of the last twelve Tests and won only four Tests - all against New Zealand. His own personal performance as captain is as below

Vaughan as captain

vs BAN/WIN : 1,198 runs @ 54.45
vs the rest : 1,934 runs @ 30.70

30.70 is not a good enough average and Strauss is better captaincy material having beaten Pakistan which is one more (decent) Asian country than Vaughan has beaten since Vaughan has failed to beat Sri Lanka, Pakistan or India in a single Test - and he's had eleven goes at it!

His recent batting record is pretty poor too, 350 runs in 13 inns at 26.92 which includes his 106 vs New Zealand. Even if you only take his 10 inns against New Zealand it is 323 runs @ 32.30

If England do win this Test it will be down to the batting, so far everyone but Vaughan has made a contribution. Vaughan's only contribution thus far is to be part of a collapse which fortunately didn't cost England - largely because the saffers are still working out how to bowl on the pitch

Just the first day of the first test match. England have played well but its way too early to predict the failure of the Saffers. They have the best pace bowling attack in the world currently. Ntini and Steyn all underperformed yesterday which is understandable as they havent played a test match before this for a decently long period.

I said this before the series though despite the fact that SA have got all the pace, England's bowlers will use the conditions better and Monty will outplay Harris.

That's exactly what SA camp has been saying, yet they haven't backed it up. I'm not writing them off yet. They have a lot to prove though. When you say that kinda thing you should back it up instantly or else not say it at all.

The problem for SA is, that unlike a side like NZ, they have heaps of talented players and big names. However, they come into the game looking under-prepared. They seem to lack bowling plans and field plans and backup plans. The bowlers can't land the ball in the right areas. Very strange.

Wow, Pietersen destroyed Steyn.

This is why Mohammad Asif is better then Dale Steyn, he doesn't seem anywhere near as dangerous when his bowling to a world-class batsman like Kevin Pietersen and he has been dispatched.

Asif has gotten more world-class batsman out then Steyn and Steyn has played twice as many Test Matches. Destroying feeble teams like New Zealand, the West Indies and India's lower order doesn't make you a great bowler if you can't trouble the top class batsman aswell.

Nevertheless, no shame in being made look silly by KP. His probably the best batsman to ever play for England.

I wouldn't go as far as him being the best batsmen ever to play for England. Although he would be up there even at this early stage in his career!

Calm down, this is a slow pitch and it is the first innings of the entire series. Steyn still has seven more innings in this tour to prove himself, and this innings isn't over either.

This is very positive by England, 62 runs in just 3/4 of an hour. They've not been slogging those runs either.

250 partnership up.

If it were me, I'd be looking to bat most of the day.

Not at all. The bowling has been loose though. Even worse than yesterday. I've been saying it for about a year. Ntini is no where near as good as he was. He's not looked threatening at all and leaked runs.

Bell and Pietersen are looking fantastic.

This is enjoyable to watch i have to say. I'm with Sureshot, bat most of the day, and consider putting the saffies in for the last 40-60 minutes.

what the hell is going on, Morkel has bowled 1 over in the first hour with the new ball, and they have taken him off and brought on Harris!!! they really should of given morkel more than 1 over this morning!

Even though the bowlers have been poor, Smith has been equally poor in his captaincy. I knew he wasn't the best but blimey....

Smith has been shocking, but give him the benefit of the doubt, it is just one bad innings - he has been captaining for a while and if he'd captained like that more often, I'm sure he wouldn't have kept the captaincy.

KP out for 152 off 181, with 20 4's and one 6! morkel gets the wicket after finally being given the ball, not sure what happenes in KP's head after he passes 150, hes gone past 150 5 times, and 4 of thoses hes been out before hes got to 160, 3 tims on 158, maby he relaxes to much when he gets past 150
