South Africa in England

Ok, that seems strange to me that it would actually be a RULE, could someone quote it for me. I find it very strange. There was no doubt at all that that ball was going to hit the stumps, I think its rediculous it cant be given out on a technicality. If it pitches outside off its got to do a hell of a lot more to be an LBW chance :what

Wikipedia said:
If the ball hits the batsman (without first hitting his bat or a hand holding the bat) when it was otherwise going to hit the wicket, then it is judged out LBW, unless:

* (1) the ball pitched (bounced) on the leg side or
* (2) the ball hit the batsman outside the off stump and the umpire adjudged that the batsman was genuinely attempting to play the ball.

Yes it is a rule, It has been around for some while.

Thanks, just looked it up myself as well. I apologise then. But still I find it very strange.

If I am a right arm bowler bowling to a left hand batter (as in this case) do I have more of a chance of hitting the wicket if I pitch it outside line of leg or off? Leg of course because natural angle takes it towards the stumps. I think the rule is very bleak and doesn't consider at all left to right, right to left etc etc. But anyway thats just my opinion and I still don't have a problem with the dismissal because simply, the ball was definately hitting the stumps. :)

In most games, Morkel has got a yard on Steyn but Steyn has hit 97.4mph in the past and so he has the ability to bowl quicker.

Bowling one ball at 97 miles does not make steyn quicker, morkel bowls
consistently around 90 miles so has a greater average speed

Yes, I already accepted that, stop intentionally being argumentative.

Well played, KP! Another fantastic century and England in great shape at 289-3!

Edit: And then he nearly played on the very next ball! Hold on until close, KP!

Well played KP, Innings was a pleasure to watch :clap

great innings by KP, and good on bell for giving him the support.

Wonder why Smith doesn't give the ball to Ntini.

Great innings Pietersen, must have meant a lot to him, 100 against them in ODI's and now tests. Excellent partnership this, much needed too, well done to Bell, proved the doubters wrong, this was a pressure situation when he came to the crease, and he's still there now. Needs to get to the hundred, as he's got out between 50 and 100 far too many times.

Only about an over to go, but barring a catastrophic last over, been a very satisfying day for England.:)

Just to finish with this. I believe the rule was brought in to discourage defensive bowling lines.

Really didn't expect to see England at 300+ for 3 at the end of the day, following being 117-3 after that collapse of sorts. Excellent innings from KP. Good supporting role from Bell too. I think Steyn and Morkel stand out as the best bowlers, with Morkel pipping Steyn. It's a very good pitch, I think if we can get to around 500 tomorrow, we are in a good position. We need at least 450 from this first innings. I can't see why we can't get there though. Colly, Ambrose and Broad to come.
