South Africa in England

He has a role with the ball and has currently not performed well in it. 18 wickets at 44.88 with an economy of 3.18 is not very good at all. He has done well with the bat, averaging 35.87 with the bat - but at eight, is batting really that important when you haved a bowler who is pretty much a waste at this point in time at Test cricket.

That stats don't reflect how wel he bowled though, when you have taken as few wickets as he has so far then he 2 or 3 drops make a massive difference. He is not the finished article at all but I'm hoping and I believe he will come good at some point. It took a while for his ODI career to get going then after he got some wickets against the windies everything seemed to go right. The main thing is that he shows the improvement before the ashes because that is a series where we can't afford to carry him.

I wouldn't drop Ambrose. Well in ODI's but then why they picked him is beyond me.

Fred is an interesting one, he is not at his best, especially with the bat, the 2 innings he did play well were extremely lucky. Having said that I would give him a better chance than Colly of scoring runs. Jones is very good however I think they are trying to ease him back in whilst with Fred they'll just throw him in at the deep end because of the presence and the fact it's Fred. Whilst i like the idea of an agressive attack with Ambrose at 6 it is a move that would be far too bold for a selection comitee who have kept the same side for 6 games. Realistically Fred is the only man in with a shout. If Jones maintains his fitness though Worcester will use him a lot more when they are really pushing for promotion so he has a good chance of getting on a tour imo.

According to the commentators its might have something to do with the hovercraft being used to cover the pitch.

What is that meant to do? Suck all the moisture out or something? I know they want 5 day tests at Lords but this is ridculous, the amount of draws there makes it boring.

He has always been a very good ODI bowler though and his List A record supports that, but he has never been more than average at the four or five day game.

In the first 2 seasons he was pretty avrage but by last season he was averaging 25 which is pretty good although nnot test match form.

It is a very complicated situation, but I'd go with...

6. Ambrose
7. Broad
8. Jones
9. Sidebottom
10. Anderson
11. Panesar

England's 1st innings aside. They don't have the strongest line-up going around and now you want Ambrose at 6? On a decent/bowler-friendly track, that lineup would be suicide.

Man alot of overs bowled thus far, the 3rd new ball of SA second innings is available, will England take it? Its been some time since I have heard of this, in fact maybe never, don't or can't recall, one team facing 3 new balls in an inning.

Pretty poor from England.
I thought they would have won till now before I went at work.
Amla is in best touch.

Crap Bowling and poor Captaincy from Vaughn.

Did you watch the game Vaib? Good to have you back but that is a ridiculous comment. England have actually bwoled quite well but the pitch was dead on the 1st day its even worse today. Ball is coming through at around 3-5 mph slower. An easy batting track! England put the balls in the right areas but the pitch did nothing and the ball did nothing!

Ya Ollie.I also have missed PC so much.Trust me after spending so much time on PC,its hard to leave.
I have not watched whole game again due to busy schedule though was lucky that I watched KP's class inning.I'll try to see highlights.Fair enough reason regarding to pitch but at least England would have got couple of more wickets.
Anyway all set to catch future Matches.:)

Freds in :D Collys batting form can't be carried, let's blow away the saffies.

Well Played S Africa, really happy to see H Amla hit his 100. will like to see highlights on channel fie tonight, i heard it was like bodyline bowling and field setting. lol

Next text could be a cracker and i think a result is possible, flintoff will definate play would like to see who he comes in for, but looks like to me it will be for collingwood.

86 overs. Those are the games which shorten a player's career.

I hate the follow-on. It has so little value. The side made to follow on must be significantly weaker for it to be effective.

It would have been worth not enforcing the follow on, just to give their bowlers a break. Get 200 quick runs. there's 550, chase that in 5 sessions. I think Sidebottom and Anderson bowled quite well, the latter in particular, the former in regards to his back problems. I think it is between Broad and Collingwood. I think Colly will be dropped. Flintoff won't be 12th man.

I thought that the South African fightback was an enthralling one and would have been a good advertisement for Test cricket, with the accurate, lively bowling from both spin and pace and gutsy batting if not for the stupendously flat pitch which diluted the contest in the third innings. Nonetheless, Smith and McKenzie batted extremely well with the former surely taking a large step to prove his opening credentials to the English media who seem inable to watch any cricket other than that either involving or taking place in England. Amla also batted with some dogged determination after being targeted with the short ball.

England's bowling was a mixture of good, lively bowling with unnerving stamina, especially from Anderson and Sidebottom, fighting through some back stiffness to regain some good form in the bowling action despite obvious discomfort, and some sloppy and thoughtless bowling from Broad and Monty respectively. Broad, once more, showed his inadequacies as a Test bowler by going for 3.00 runs per over without picking up a wicket. He let the pressure go far too often by bowling straight long hops rather than the outswinging, rising length ball which will be his main tool of destruction if he is to one day spearhead the Test attack. The Skysports commentators were all too keen to praise the superb intelligence of Broad for using the cross seam rather than the thoughtlessness of not sticking to a threatening line and lengths. Speaking of thoughtless bowling, I think Monty was highly disappointing on a track on which he should have been a potent wicket taking threat. It was not good thinking to bowl at his usual 55-57mph speed when it became obvious early that good ol' fashion 'f and g' (flight and guile) was the more intelligent path on a slow pitch which aided spin and batsmen not willing to take undue risks such as play a cut shot to a bouncing delivery or lunge either forward or back. The excuse that 'he is learning' cannot be used forever and Monty needs to become a bowler who could write novels about his thinking at the crease, not just his quirky appeals, celebrations and personality.

On to the next Test at Headingley, I think that England should, perhaps controversially, drop Stuart Broad for Andrew Flintoff. Broad's batting has been an asset for England as of late and his swing will no doubt be useful, but I simply think that a good performance from Flintoff with the ball > one from Broad, with the former also more likely. I also think that the runs which Broad leaks in Test cricket could prove vital in what I predict to be quite a low scoring contest in which each innings only has a couple of top order partnerships of note. I think that Simon Jones needs to be given notification by the ECB that his performances have not gone unnnoticed, lest he loses motivation, as he did at Glamorgan. All else aside, 29 wickets at 13.27 is worthy of selection for someone who has proved himself at Test level in England and I hope he keeps it up. Perhaps he should be brought to train with the team, if Worcestershire don't have a game, as with Flintoff before this Test.

He doesn't play ODI cricket and is a spinner. 86 overs will not do Monty harm, especially if he has learnt from the experience.

I don't think England could have predicted that the pitch would 'die' after its liveliness in South Africa's first innings. England went for the quick kill and despite it not paying off, I felt that it was the correct option. As Nasser pointed out on commentary, bowlers have got used to back to back Tests and although this particular turnover will be of slightly increased stress; it was a calculated risk due to the situation.
