Sri Lanka in Australia Dec-Jan 2012/13

I can see Starc driving me nuts shortly, far too much like Johnson. His only upside is a much natural action and ball release so he only really needs to work on the consistency.

So Wade is proving me wrong :)

Why don't Sri Lanka use Samaraweera as a bowler? He's got an awesome FC record.

Yeah I put him as an allrounder based on his million FC wickets in the last fantasy cricket game.. then realised, oh wait they never use him for some reason.

He was originally seen as a bowler. A lot of his games in the late 90s were played in the lower order. When he made the Test side, it was still pretty much as an allrounder; he made 100 on Test debut coming in at 8 (behind a nightwatchman).

However, he hasn't really bowled seriously since about 2002. Staggeringly, he took nearly 300 first class wickets by the age of about 25 and then turned part-time.

How long has it been?
More than 2 years. He has scored only 2 centuries in test matches till now first against Pakistan in 2009 and second against India in 2010

mathews needs to kick on, not just for the match situation (which is all but lost anyway) but as someone looking to be in sri lanka's top order very soon these starts must become hundreds on a more regular basis.

good series here would set him up we for the future.

erm, just started watching, I take it watson broke down as his stats have an incomplete over.

No, Hilfy broke down with a side strain so Watson had to complete his over. :facepalm
Who will come in for Hilfy now...:rolleyes This injury thing is like a joke.

dunno what most shield pitches are like but on this one there is no sideways movement, the only way to trouble a batsman is to bend your back and hit the ground as hard as you can. that's just going to mess bowlers up. probably worse than indian pitches even, as there is an incentive for doing it whereas if I was in india I'd probably just get fed up and start medium pacing it in.

I would've had Mitchell Johnson in the team on that pretext; he was hitting the wicket well in Perth and if it was going to be another dull wicket, then relying on swing was going to be a bit tedious.

It's been a bit of a hopeless Test summer, pitch wise. Brisbane looked a bit soft and Perth was not as exciting after the initial moisture wore out. Adelaide actually seemed the best, a nice hard wicket for a couple of days, at least, but the unquestionable even pace of the pitch probably put too much in the favour of the batsmen.

Perhaps it's a backlash to what has been said in recent times about "result pitches" and favouring bowlers too much, particularly in domestic cricket. The board got really worried that the precious batsmen weren't getting enough featherbeds, so I guess they got their wish now.

Watson when you will score a century in test :(

Maybe when they stop dicking around with him...Watson seems to be the new target of the commentators/media now that Ponting has retired. His 30 the other day was apparently 'listless', 'lacking energy' and a lot of other speculative and useless things. Forget that he put on 86 with Phil Hughes and gave Australia that middle order bridge that hadn't been there all series vs SA.

I'm with Ian Chappell actually, they should have left Watson as an opener and told him to focus on his batting. His record as an opener is good - averaging 43, the only weakness being his lack of 100s. If he finds concentration to go with those consistent starts, then that average of 43 would only go higher. But now they have moved him to yet another new spot, they've implied in the press that he couldn't play in the Test side unless he can bowl (ie. implying he's NOT one of the best 6 batsmen in the country), and they pulled him out of a $2 million dollar tournament to rest, and since batsmen don't really need rest they were obviously looking at his bowling workload. Basically Cricket Australia and the selectors want to have their cake and eat it too with Watson. I don't think you can do that. He's paying the price for being in a team with 4 openers, with no good middle order players banging on the door for selection. eg. Doolan and Quiney are openers or #3s as well.

Interestingly poised Test match this. I take it Hilfenhaus won't be bowling second time around? If so, you'd imagine Australia would need longer to bowl Sri Lanka out, so will be interesting to see if Clarke has the guts to set them 400 in 4 sessions to win the test. I hope he does, because if Sanga or Mahela get going, it could be a very good finish.

setting 400 won't rely on guts but on scoring some runs. I don't really think the run rate will get up around 4-5 today, but at the same time I suspect a target over 350 would be enough.

I take that back, Clarke is unstoppable.

----------

Literally unstoppable, he decides the contest is disappointing and walks off with hurt feelings having scored 57 from 46.
