Trans-Tasman Trophy (NZ in Australia), December 2011/12

Are the new Australian bowlers really good or is NZ playing horribly?? :(

Without their specialist batsman (Vettori) I think NZ are not gonna reach 100:mad

Australia won the toss, and they chose to bowl, which gives you an idea of how bowler friendly the conditions are.

Australia have bowled well, but at the same time New Zealand haven't played well. They haven't played as bad as they did at The Gabba, but still they're a long way off the pace of the top sides.

Brownlie has stood out quite clearly. His experience in Australia would have helped.

No idea what we are going to do with Starc but he will be easy meat for India.

The heart rate thing is new I believe, never seen it before.

But Brownlie up the order in the second innings, number four will do him good I think. Taylor and whoever else can bugger off down the order if they're not going to score any runs.

I suspect Hughes will make runs but like all the players under pressure unless it is done against India it will mean very little.

Runs on this track count, IMO.

So do chances. Stop trying to edge through the slips, Hughes!

Why isn't Daniel Vettori playing??Is there an injury?
And take a look at NZ's condition.150 and all pins down.Guptill,McCullum,Ryder,Taylor look strong on paper but look how they perform in the match!!!!They faced the same bowlers in the Australia A match and played brilliantly but now they fall one by one like a row of bicycles. If one falls on another all will fall down.

Pattinson another 5-fer.. Hes going to have some mean stats for his first two ever tests!

Clarke, Ponting and Hussey are the only ones who are going to make runs this first innings... It could be over in 2 days this test (if rain doesnt do to much damage)! What a green pitch..

I remember a few years ago when aussie ben was in everyone's faces about how good Hughes and Pomersbach were going to be...

Aussie Ben is on a different planet.. hes lost it!

Pommers aint dedicated enough and Hughes is... just Hughes.

Did something with his hamstring last night they were saying. It's bad luck but if ever NZ didn't need a spinner it's probably this pitch.

Channel Nine's had it for a couple of years now. First time I remember seeing it was when they had it on Dwayne Bravo showing what his heart rate was in the dressing room compared to when he was walking out to bat. I think it went from about 60 to about 140 :p

I don't think NZ did too much wrong to be honest. Good balls and a bit of bad luck and VERY helpful conditions is all it takes. The ball was seaming around like crazy and most of the dismissals reflected that. Guptill was done by seam movement despite the commentary team being adamant he should have been playing straighter...which was not accurate IMO, he still would have edged it no matter how straight his bat was. And he was only looking to play through wide mid on for goodness sake - should he aim at the stumps with every drive!! :mad Ryder's ball swung in pretty late, Taylor's ball seamed in a lot. McCullum could be excused for going for a ball that full, he'd certainly done the hard work to deserve an attacking shot. Then Williamson, Brownlie, Young and Southee were fairly unlucky to chop on and get caught down leg. On another day, none of those hit the stumps or get nicked.

But yeah bowling was pretty solid. It's amazing how much better Siddle is when the ball is moving around. He's cranking up the pace too, touching 150 again today. Starc again looked pretty ordinary.

And Hughes...oh my goodness he's a frustrating guy. I really don't see why we should owe him anything. Sure he had a good debut, the odd century since and a good late season surge for NSW last season. But I don't think that qualifies him for the chauffeur treatment in the team, especially with so many choices at the top. I think he should go play county cricket again this winter, test his technique in different conditions than the typical Shield pitch.
