West Indies in England

Yeah, Stuart Broad is Chris Broad son.

Chanderpaul has really stepped into the breech since Lara retired. Chanderpaul wa always a fantastic player and consistant performer, but he was always over-shadowed, perhaps Lara's retirement could be the making of Chanderpaul?

Chanderpaul's inning today was genius. It reminded me of how Hussey played in the Ashes series. Start off slow and quicken up your innings. England allowed Shiv to do that. Instead of getting him out for 40 off 90, we allowed him to reach 100+ off 110 odd.

I can;t understand the English selectors. Honestly i'm out of words.

They just bowled a team out in the last ODI, all 5 front liners looked good and were taking wickets and causing chances. So of course, they go and drop 2 of them, for a player who hasn't played in years and has only 3 games experiance and apart timer spinner who they rekon can bat, but really he's hardly an all-rounder, again who has hardly played.

I feel sorry for Plunkett. How is this helping him. He's 21, young and has some talent. He just needs some more experiance and he will become more dependable. Dumping him after bowling pretty decent in the last ODI isn't helping his confidance.

As for Panesar, he also has a lot to learn in ODI cricket. England are better off keeping him against an opponant like the West Indies so he can learn. It'll be better then throwing him up against the Australians overseas. He needs the experiance now. If England want part time spin, use Pietersen. Yardy doesn't look wicket taking, at least Panesar has that knack for wickets.

England need to stick to a winning combination. Why change a side after a faultless loss? Ridiculous. Yardy was hardly used with the ball anyway, they may as well have brought in Trott or another batsman.

Fully agreed irottev.
It would be good to get Bopara in because he had a good twenty20 game for Essex the other night.

Having said all that, Chanderpauls innings was pretty damned good. He paced it really well. He's really good at summing up the wicket. Played himself in, got the West Indies in a good position, kept Samuels happy at the other end and then they unleashed after doing the hard yards. Good signs for them. They also bowled pretty well, though it seems a few of the English players got themselves out again, including Cook. Cook needs to look to play that Chanderpaul role. He can afford to bat slower if he's going to be there through the innings.

Chandepaul lookedgood at 3, good inititive from the West Indies.

It's good to see the series at 1-1. Both teams have looked really good at times.

Apart from the twenty20 games which coming in at 5 is no easy task, Chanderpaul has had at least 50 in each innings he has played in.

England can't find away through him, the only man to get him out convincing was Panesar who should always play since we have seen him in tests take wickets on unhelpful surfaces when people say he shouldn't play, he needs that to now go into the ODI's because England are desperate for a wicket taker.

If Panesar plays, he will take wickets.
If he takes wickets, he will gain confidence.
If he gains confidence, he will bowl better.
If he bowls better, he will take more wickets and so forth.

His and Liam Plunkett's situation reminds me of Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.

The top two needs are self-esteem and self-actualisation. Monty needs to feel needed in England's ODI set-up and that will not happen if he is keeps getting dropped. He knows he is needed in Test matches thus, he has the confidence to bowl well and we have seen that once he is full of confidence, he can bowl very well.

These needs apply to any cricketer and Liam Plunkett is no exception. The only way he can gain confidence is by bowling well and the only way he can bowl well is if he plays. Being dropped even after playing well doesn't help. It will only damage his confidence. What message does that convey? 'We know you did well but we still prefer someone else'?

Wow.
Chander's hit some bradmanesque form.
Even though i havn't seen the game, the numbers speak for themselves.
Next Lara (at least for Windies) anyone?
Hope is form continues :)

Chander has been phenomenal. Agree with the gripes about selection. I think the England camp took Windies a little too much for granted and thought this would be a good time to experiment. Not really intelligent seeing they hardly have one of the best XI's in the world atm, so they should really not be looking at their bench as their higher priority.

i agree with that...being dropped every other game does not help the player's confidence at all....plus, i think monty may be a bit more useful in the ODI set-up....for example, bringing in Yardy instead of Monty was a bad decison. What did yardy really bring into the line up with his batting? 19 runs?

yardy could have got more runs and was out to a pretty good shot, i dont agree with the selectors dropping panesar for yardy though, panesar was great in the first odi, bowled alot of wicket taking deliveries

Yardy should go to County cricket and work on his bowling then come back in a few years to see if he's learned anything, if not forget him.

Will - Nail, Head, Hammer etc.

Your absolutely right, both of them are confidence bowlers, Monty in particular. If he doesn't feel support Monty reverts to bowling darts, which just doesn't work for him and won't take wickets. He needs to play OD Cricket and be encouraged to bowl how he usually does in it.

I think he should always have a slip and a silly point, if he goes for runs it doesn't matter because that will give him the best possible chance of taking wickets.
It would put the batsmen under pressure and make him think whether he should stick or twist.

I would like to see England try that with him.
