West Indies in England

I still think he has a future in Test Cricket. However, if he can't perform against the Windies Test team then there really isn't much hope for him. This is a big summer for Michael Vaughan.

I think he's still a class Test Batsman. At least he looks like he knows what he's doing

Looks like he knows what he is doing? He is shocking!!

Everyone can say as much as they want he's batting well in nets, bla bla bla. But he isn't doing a good job for England. You can't hold a place in the team because your captain. He needs to get runs, and he isn't doing it. Now I know you will say that's in ODI's and not tests. However, what has he done in tests since the Ashes 2002/2003? Absolute didly squat!! One score I remember (at Old Trafford against the Aussies).

Cook has also done nothing wrong so they won't drop him. The way I see it is it'll be this team that lines up for the first test:

Andrew Strauss
Alaistair Cook
Michael Vaughan
Kevin Pietersen
Ian Bell
Paul Collingwood
Andrew Flintoff
James Foster
Matthew Hoggard
Stephen Harmisson
Monty Panesar

This is what I expect. Not want.

What do you want even if you think it's irrelevant?

Ok, well this is what I would go with:

Marcus Trescothick
Andrew Strauss
Alaistair Cook
Kevin Pietersen
Ian Bell
Paul Collingwood
Andrew Flintoff
James Foster
Matthew Hoggard
James Anderson
Monty Panesar

Would Simon Jones play a part in that series?

Not for me. He isn't going to be quite to standard in my opinion after a long period off. He would be better at least preparing for India's visit, if not till the winter when he would be required in New Zealand!

You only reckon 4 bowlers James? (obviously Colly and KP can roll their owns over).

Yes. That is what we needed to do in the Ashes, but we didn't. Otherwise we have a stinking long tail. Also Flintoff is No.7 which I think suits his batting ability.

I would go with James' team, just swap Bell and Collingwood, and maybe Harmision in for Jimmy.

Vaughans Test career summary btw.

Ok, maybe I was a little harsh on Vaughan with the "he's done nothing since 02/03" comment. However, I just don't rate him as one of the best batsmen available to us, and I think he's holding a place based on his captaincy rather than a combination of that and his batting talent.

I would Sureshot yes. Maybe if Vaughan wasn't selected I would re-consider that slightly, but seeing as England are strugling for that seam bowler that can bat and average about 20, I think 4 front-line bowlers is what we have to go in with.

Plunkett?

I'd like to see Shah in there, but Vaughan will be playing. It depends upon his form, if the early games suggest we could got with Flintoff at 6, keeper at 7, etc. then maybe we could revert to a 5 man attack.

Plunkett maybe yes. He hasn't done it in his test match career thus far with the bat but he is definately capable.

I would take Shah over Vaughan. Played in India, got a score, never seen since!

Yes and his two modes of dismissals in that match was one of the catches of the year and a run out that was Collingwood's fault. When you look at the patience given to players like Giles and Jones it's amazing that someone who makes an early impression as good as what Shah did are instantly cast aside.

Vaughan wont be dropped and has no chance of being dropped, unless he performs attrociously in the Windies series. Michael Vaughan has always been a test match player, has never been seen as an odi batsman. SO therefore you cannot drop him just because of a poor world cup. Also, he is an amazing captain, that sets unorthodox and challenging fields. IMO he is definetly worthy of a place.

Heres the team that I want after reading the rest of the thread:
Tresco
Strauss
Vaughan
Pietersen
Bell
Flintoff
Prior
Hoggard
Harmison
Jones/collingwood (obviously moved up the order)
Panesar

Thats the best team we have tbh, but only if Tresco and Jones are fit and if Vaughan starts scoring runs, if not, Cook back in at 3 tbh, with Strauss as captain, not flintoff. Then the ODi team:
Tresco
Bell
Pietersen
Collingwood
Flintoff
Strauss
Yardy/Shah/Dalrymple
Nixon/Prior
Mahmood
Anderson
Panesar

They imo are the best teams, not sure about no. 7 though, any ideas ?

I'm sorry guys but Tres won't be playing Tests for England within 4/5 weeks of the county season. I hope he plays for us again but we have to test him out a bit more at Somerset. In Cook we have a good enough replacements, Cooks a brilliant player who should make mincemeat of an attack lacking a quality spinner.

Jones? It really depends on how many overs, 1st test? No, maybe 3rd or 4th.
