The New Zealand side made a solid start through topscorer Colin de Grandhomme, who scored 49 off 34 balls, while BJ Watling scored a quickfire 29 and Reece Young an unbeaten 26 off 14.
Test paceman Tim Southee was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers, taking two for 25 off four overs.
