Frizzel County Championship Division 2:

Old Trafford
Day 3

Lancashire Vs Somerset

Somerset: 302/6dec

Lancashire: 137/0

M Chilton: 65*
I Sutcliffe: 54*

Lancashire openers turn on the style for half century?s!

-----------------------

The Lancashire opening pairing of Sutcliffe and Chilton have been niggling the ball around extremely well, picking up ones and two?s. No runs have been scored down the ground due to clever field placing but gaps have opened up in the covers and on the leg side. The ball has been easily worked around, mainly due to ragged lines from the bowlers, this could be down to the fact that the numbers 1 and 2 are a right and left handed partnership. The Bowlers have been straying leg side far to often when an off side field has been set including, four slips, a gully, a cover point and short mid off. On the leg side only a deep backward square and a short leg are present meaning that anything clipped leg side is going to get at least two.

Chilton gets in on the act and majestically pierces the field for a boundary

Both batsmen have reached the 50 mark with a healthy strike rate and both look settles and ready to make a big score, Lancashire cant really afford the time to get another man in now if they are to challenge and win this match, they need to knock off the total and the declare before the evening session is over and take a few wickets before the day is done, that should leave them some time to bowl the rest out on day 4 and chase down the total in the last one and a half to two sessions.

It is possible for Lancashire to win but a draw seems more likely due to a whole days play being washed out, if it had only been a session they might have stood a better chance, the opening pairing need to get there skates on and knock of that total as soon as possible so they can declare and start to bowl, the quickies will need to get into a better rhythm and take wickets, especially Flintoff and Anderson. Stay tuned to see if they can do it

Captain Marvel Hammers Home and Sets Up A Tense Last Session!

-----------------------

Lancashire captain Mark Chilton pulled one out of the bag, hammering 143 runs from 193 balls including four 4's. The top singluar score in an innings so far this season was hardly a slog fest, Chilton played himself in allongside Ian Sutcliffe and reached his 50 in 79 balls at a healthy strike rate, both batsmen wanted to let loose but this idea went down the drain when Ian Sutcliffe prodded a medium pace delivery to Francis at cover point who said "thank you very much" as he threw the ball high into the air in jubilant celebrations, the opening partnership was finally broken and it was Johnson who got the breakthrough, Sutcliffe failed to make a further impact after scoring a half century and went for 57.

Brad Hodge perishes trying to drive Andy Caddick through the covers

cricket200520050705215558206th.png

A new batsmen in meant slowing down the pace for Mark Chilton which is why he scored so few boundarys during his time at the crease, he couldnt afford two new men in as that would have meant Lancashire hardly had any chance of winning the match, as it happened the man at the other end should have taken a leaf out of the captains book, Brad Hodge lasted 6 deliveries and scored five runs, after scoring a single form the last ball of the previous over he was on strike the next, he hammered Andy Caddick to the boundary in Caddick's second ball and tried to do so the delivery after, Caddick was to smart however, he dropped his pace and it worked, Hodge edged straight to Parsons at third slip.

Flintoff hammers a six .......

..... but is dismissed almost as softly as Sutcliffe

The "Dangerman" Andrew Flintoff arived at the crease just as Lancashire needed to up the tempo, Somerset had a plan and stuck to it, strategic field placements meant that Flintoff had to go up and over from the start which was to be his undoing, he tried to play himself in but struggled to pierce the field. His only outlet was the paddle down to fine leg, however, this was risky as he was facing Andy Caddick and Johnson, neither are slow bowlers, he was dropped twice attempting this shot, once by Caddick himself who dropped him after a top edge form his own bowling and once by the wicket keeper and a top edge came his way. Flintoff decided that there was only one thing for it and with the run rate slowing he started slogging, Caddick pitched one that was sliding down leg and Flintoff caught it well and sent it sailing out of the ground, the next ball he tried to hammer one through the cover but drove it straight at the area packed with fielders, Burns didnt have to move.

Mark Chilton scores a rare boundary on his way to an unbeaten 143

cricket200520050706172035465bq.png

Stuart Law scored 5 boundarys on his way to 40 but perished to a well placed yorker

cricket200520050706175506840ju.png

The final partnership between Mark Chilton and Stuart Law proved vital, the Aussie gave himself room outside off stump and sprayed the ball all over the place, if it wasnt to the boundary it was at least one, Chilton rotated the strike well and added a few boundarys himself, Law finally met his match when a yoker found ins way under the bat and into off stump, Chilton decided to come off just after Tea when this wicket fell to give themsleves a chance in the field of a few quick wickets before stumps. Good Captaining.

The pressure is on Somerset not to lose wickets, they dont neccesarily need to score many runs but wickets are the key, they are capabale of batting through but the Lancashire bowlers will be hungry, its getting exciting down at Old Trafford!

Brilliant innings there from Chilton. Its now heading towards an interesting end, and Somerset will not want to lose wickets.

Congrats on the century. I still have to score a hundred in tests, my highest being 92 by Ian Bell. I have scored two 100s in ODIs however with Geraint Jones (112) and Andrew Flintoff (100).

Somerset have been bowled out for 81 and its 12:03 on the fourth day, things are hotting up. Report Later.

Lancashire Bowlers Run Riot As The Red Roses Look Set For A Dramatic Win!

-----------------------

Lancashire have done the unthinkable and put themselves in a position to win the match, thanks in most part go to Muttiah Muralitharan who took four wickets, the last three in the space of just four runs. Lancashire now need just 79 runs in six hours of play to seal the win, it would be harder to lose from this position. The first wicket fell in the first over, the fifth ball of the over was edged with soft hands and didn?t carry to Freddie at 1st slip, the sixth did though and he made no mistake second time around. James Anderson dismissed Graham Smith the following over and Somerset found themselves at 2/2 as the captain went fishing outside the off stump and caught the edge which Warren Hegg caught with ease.

James Anderson skittled Smith and Burns in quick succession

Cork carried on where he left off by taking the fourth wicket. Ian Blackwell made a lowly 1 before an inswinger saw the left hander thin edge to keeper Hegg who was being kept busy In this match. Andrew Flintoff replaced James Anderson in the attack and made an instant impression, he trapped Parsons LBW for just six, the ball seamed back into the batsmen and caught him dead centre as he played on the backfoot, the umpire had no decision to make. Muttiah Muralitharan collected his first wicket in the last ball of day three, Francis was bamboozled by the doosra delivery, Murali was bowling ove the wicket to the left hander and the batsman expected the ball to turn away from him so he played straight, however, the ball turned into him and crached into his leg stump rocking it backwards and sending the bails flying, bad batting, great bowling.

Somerset tried to fight back.....

cricket200520050707153106477ny.png

..... but Magic Murali and Fantastic Freddie were having none of it

cricket200520050706154818782ow.png

Flintoff was given the ball at the start of day four and what a good decision it turned out to be, he collected another wicket son after, giving the first innings centurian Chilton a dolly at third slip after inducing the edge from Turner. After that it turned into the Muttiah Muralitharan show, the off spinner twisted and turned his way to three more wickets in the space of four runs and ended with figures of 7.2 overs, two maidens, 4/17. The first wicket to fall was that of Johnson, LBW?s are hard to come by for spinners, especially for off spinners bowling around the wicket to a right hander, however, the umpire was given no choice but to raise the finger, the batsmen left a delivery that straightened and hit him very low on the pads and in line with middle and off.

Brad Hodge takes a screamer off the bowling of Muralitharan to dismiss McLean

Durston sweeps on his way to 23 not out

cricket200520050707160010047ly.png

Murali got his second of the spell when he slowed the pace down, the ball was bouncing of the bat in all direction but nowhere near any fielders until Brad Hodge dived the whole width of the pitch to take an outstanding one handed catch to see off McLean. The third and final wicket of the innings was Andrew Caddick, he tried to play defensively but lashed out late on and it proved to be his downfall, he flisked one to the legside, straight at short leg who just happened to be the best paor of hands on the field, Andrew Flintoff. And that was the end of that,

Durston continues his onslaught but to no avail

So, needing just 79 runs from 6 hours worth of play it looks like Lancashire have it in the bag but going on what we have seen over the last four days this season is going to get better and better and with two Totesport League games coming up expect fireworks because everyone loves being at the top of the Sky Sport Sixes League.

So should Warne be out of the game for doping then, a far worse offence?

Well done S Harmison.

Haha, very good come back.
But Warnie is my second favourite player though, so... :)

The score reads wrong on your 1st batting innings, like with Somersets 1st innings.
