Group B - Bangladesh, Bermuda, India, Sri Lanka

So if Ganguly can take over and captain for a few series and hopefully get India back to winning ways, then Yuvraj can take the mantle over and go from there!

India plays Australia next.
Forget the Banglas...For that we need a captain like Ganguly.
I dont think he'll play after mid-2008.At the most the ICC CT in Pakistan.

Let Saurav take over as captain.Yuvraj tends to go along well with him.Maybe Yuvi can take over once the team is formed.

92% of the TOI readers want Sachin to be dropped. Man, this is gathering momentum. If Sachin somehow retains his spot for the Bangladesh series, he should make use of it to score heavy runs. I hate seeing this great batsman suffering the ignonimy of being dropped. he is the one of those rare Indian players who has not been dropped so far in his whole career!

He should be dropped.
Show him the door. They call him the best bat in the world, then he shuld know how to play the good deliveries as well.

A century against Bang might help him.But he will slip bakc to the origianl against Australia.

To be frank, no one has the guts to drop him !

I seriously though when Kaif was selected he would have been a good contender for the captaincy role.

If he can cement his palce in the team,he definately will be one good captain.Remember,he led us to our WC victory in the U-19 in Sri Lanka.

yup i remember, and who can forget his Natwest performance, he was sure to be in the team. :happy

Everyone has been saying, "Give the captaincy to Yuvraj." You cannot just give it to him and expect him to perform. You need to want to be captain if you are going to get anywhere close to being it. As for captaincy being the issue in our failure, I've said it before, but when you are doing well, you're going to continue doing well. It's not like we've not had torrid times under Ganguly's captaincy. The start of the 2005 (I believe) season was a good example. The only teams we were able to beat in the Asia Cup were Hong Kong and UAE.

So it's simple to say "his captaincy sucks--that's why we're losing". It's a morale thing. It's easy to get people pumped up if you're doing well. It's also easy to take a cut-throat attitude when you aren't.

As for the discussion of certain players:

Agarkar - he's inconsistent--but which Indian fast bowler has been consistent? The answer is no one because if that were the case, he would regularly feature in our XI. We have had so many fast bowlers, none of whom have been able to cement their space in the team but Agarkar--Munaf, Irfan, Sreesanth, VRV, RP, etc. So claiming we should drop Agarkar because he's inconsistent is not right, because we cannot replace him with someone more consistent.

Harbhajan - Again--one good tournament and he's bad/must go back to domestic cricket? I think it's very unfair to the man. We saw Australia stick by Brad Hogg for a long, wicketless period, and it is/will be paying dividends for them in the coming future.

Dravid - If we seriously drop Dravid, we're only moving in one direct: backwards.

Uthappa - I still believe the guy should be given more chances. He's had, what, 7 games to prove his potential? He looked good in India, then we thrust him out of the country for 3 games, and now we decide he's not good enough? Adaptation is not instant.

I think we've got a good crop to work with. When things don't gel together, we won't get results. But there is no guarantee that chopping the line-up around will change that, either.

sohum, you left out your take on Tendulkar; what do you think about his place?

manee, can you link your article as well?

I'm indecisive about Sachin. I actually believe it is time for him to concentrate on just Test cricket. I don't think his current position fits him. If he plays ODI's, he must open, because he just looks a tad vulnerable coming in the middle order, usually because a few quick wickets have gone down and he has to play within himself.

Then again, I would also give him the benefit of the doubt seeing that he hasn't had a long run of matches without injury. I don't know. I'm on the fence, which is why I had conveniently left it out the first time. :p

How long he can play like this and escape??

If the team score is 100/1 he might come and score a century, but if it's 25/3 he will make it 30/5. It is so sad that even after playing so may years of International cricket he doesn't have the mental strength to play in crunch matches. IMO, he should retire from ODI and concentrate more on Test matches.

Pretty much sums up Tendulkar for me although when opening, he has done well on few occasions.

No! Amarnath might turn out to be someone like Javed Miandad. His refusal to adopt technology points out to that!

Sandeep Patil can be a better coach. A good aggressive player, and has been a successful coach too for Kenya. If they go for an Indian, Sandeep Patil should be the top contender. If they go for a foreigner, I might go for Steve Waugh.

i think we should go for a Indian coach.Sandip Patil has been impressive

Viv Richards was asked direcly what he wud do if BCCI calls & ask for help to coach the team.. He replied that he has done many help to many teams and he wud be happy to help!

Richards also told about Indian team that, the batting order which they have is so strong.. They have played all shots in book.. Tendulkar can play all shots in book.. Dhoni can play all shots in book.. Only thing which was missing is mental toughness.. They have to work this out in future. Something strong must be there( pointing his head )!

Also, they showed sms of Chappel which stated that, he was not happy with the teamIndia's composition for WCup with selectors. He wanted to play youngsters but Vengsagar refused. It seems some issues are going on regarding this.

Vengsarkar said, that he always wanted to back up the Indian captain.. and it was captain who backed up Sehwag in WCup squad and hence Viru was selected in squad.
