The thing I don't get, is if he could play on without a finger, then why can he not just pack his body full of painkillers and play with a broken one?

I know it's his ring finger, so he could easily get a splint on it when batting, which hand is it on? I appreciate it could be difficult with his right hand.

It's an odd one MUFC. Amputations shouldn't be taken lightly and I doubt it'll happen because it takes time to heal, for the body to get used to it, etc.

Would it heal quicker than a broken finger? Doubt it.

Nasty, he should look after his ring finger.

Fleming is the longest staying captain i beieve.
Stephs took over from Lee Germon in 1996,therafter he has led his side in 3 World Cups.
This I believe would be his last.
Maybe he can pull off yet another Martin Crowe here.

Yea he took over when he was quite young where they threw him in the deep end. Definitely wont go on to another WC as his form has been a bit in different of late.

That's the thing, I appreciate I'm looking at it simply, but if he's prepared to have it amputated, then having it broken a couple more times shouldn't matter to him, so it should just be a case of literally if he can play without any flexibility.

That is called Commitment. If this was Pakistan, he would've been at the President's desk right now. And It was India. He would've been hailed by the Indian Media! :p

It would have something to do with infection if he leaves it as is and keeps on playing.

Medically speaking,I believe in Oram's case, the amputation would help him.
Since he has decided to get his finger amputated,it must be cause the injury to his finger must be really very very bad.

To avoid the injury-infection from spreading into the body, doctors normally suggest amputation.
Yes,it would take some time to get used to,but if the infection spreads he might be required to amputate his entire hand, which neither he nor his fans would want !

Definatly is a strong word. He'd be 37 almost 38. That isn't impossible.

His form hasn't been that bad. He has struggled on a few occasions, it's been more a case of playing a quickfire/good looking 10-20 odd and getting himself out playing in the air. He's still got it. He knows it, I know it by watching. The media are just doing their jobs, interviewing people like Parore who probably only wanted to get his name out there for his real estate making stupid comments.

And on Oram, i'd rather he didn't play in the World Cup and got his finger fixed then he played in it and got it amputated. I honestly don't think he would make a crucial difference. He can be replaced, I mean, when he comes back someone like McMillan, Fulton or Styris is going to miss out. They're all capable. I appreciate his commitment.

I wouldn't give one of my fingers to win the world cup, or play in one. What happens if he gets an injury in the match after to his back and can;t play anyway. What happens if we get eliminated in the pools? Was that worth it?

I say he's best to get his finger fixed and if he's ready by the finals then great.

Not impossible but I wouldn't expect to see him at the next WC given hes going to play in his 4th one this month and if NZ win then he wouldn't have much left to achieve in the ODI game.

I believe this is the best chance for the kiwis to win !
Forgive me for the lack of knowledge of Kiwi domestic cicket though-but,the heavy weights are cetainly not going to be there the next time round.Say Vettori,Fleming,Astle[he's gone],McMillan and maybe Bond[injury niggles].

Vettori should be there next time round as he only 28 right now but he feels like hes been around forever. Bond if he can stay injury free he may want to finish off at the next WC.

Actually I disagree, I rekon we have one of the younger teams around. I rekon a high percentage of the team will still be playing next World Cup.

Bond will depend on injury. If he comes back, he won;t be bowling at 150km's. Hopefully he can turn into a McGrath type bowler for us. Vettori should be fine, McMillan is only 30, he seems to have been around ages as well. Fleming could still be there. Possibly not captain but if he's still keen.

Chris Harris said recently it;s only 4 years til the next one when he wasn't selected. Gotta love him. Infact I kinda hope Oram decides to pull out so Harry can get over there. Seriously, every second I think about it I get annoyed. We don't need a player out there with a broken finger all tournament. That WON'T help our chances. If he can't do it, send him home. We have players here keen to take part. he can play in the next World Cup, i'm sure.

EDIT:
Never mimd about the finger. He was joking. Was on the news. Typical bloody media. They're even making it out to be worse then it is.

Oram missing from the NZ Team turns it from World Class to average for me though. The struggles with McMillan/Vincent/Styris bowling 10 overs was apparent in the Chappel-Hadlee series. If NZ let a team like Sri Lanka make 350 due to that last bowler, then it's almost game over.
