India tour of England 2018

But Kohli has always been suspect in that area.

And the first 3 dismissals would be quite worrisome. Dhawan, Pujara, Rahane were beaten and beaten good

Not like this. He was in commanding form, and had got a bit bored. There was a medium pacer left armer who bowled it 1 metre outside off and he wanted to smash him to extra cover and nicked it. Not quite fishing out to defend against an outswinger which is where he's usually been vulnerable.

I think they are trying to avoid exposing Ashwin and Kuldeep in this game. Kuldeep has played enough cricket in the country (England) in the past few weeks and Ashwin has recent county experience. The team management is trying to fool the hosts (and probably the fans too) by trying to pass off Jadeja as a possible candidate for a spot in the XI. I have a feeling Ishant Sharma could turn out a revelation on this tour and might even return back to being India's spearhead quick in test cricket. He has had tremendous amount of exposure in county and he has a fantastic hang of the conditions and its showing in this county game too. Him and Yadav should hopefully have a great test series if India have to win it and I am expecting both of them to fire in unison. In that case, Hardik can be the third seamer with Ashwin/Kuldeep as the 2 spinners. And the batting should look good with Hardik and Ashwin in the lower order.

I feel India should push Pujara down the order and have either Rahane or Karthik bat at No. 3. Pujara needs confidence as he is a long term option and a bad series could seal his career up here. Rahane is a good conventional choice for No. 3 considering he is technically solid. Or a more bold and out of the box move will be to play Karthik at No. 3. Karthik has opened the batting for India in a test series in the same country (England) before and has had decent success in that endeavor. Pujara in the form/mindset he is in, desperately needs a good start from the batting order so that he can come in with less pressure and try to resurrect his career around.

I wouldn't worry too much about Pujara. And to be honest, nobody's place is secure in this side bar Kohli. He's capable of dropping anyone. We don't need to overcomplicate and overthink. Let everyone bat where they do. I am 100% not playing Pandya in the test. Our biggest loss is BK. He was the perfect bowler for England and his runs at 8 were crucial.

Even if England beat india 5/0
We (ind)will remains number 1 by ICC ranking (test)

Adil Rashid picked once again. What a disgraceful decision.
Adil red ball debut test In Asia were he was given 140 plus for 0 wickets vs pakistan but second innings slog gave him 5 Fer in 2016.

Since than he not even considered for red ball for 4 day county cricket, root wants to take chance.

Pujara down the order? That's an awful decision. India have maintained the same top 6 consistently for the last 4-5 years, why would you bring Pujara down? Despite not scoring a ton of runs he played the new ball well and wore the bowlers down, while putting pressure off the other batsmen. That's been his role mostly, and it's proved effective for India over the years. Rahane should stay at 5. He scored the bulk of his runs there there's absolutely no need to bring him to 3. Unless it's a case of dropping Pujara and bringing Karun Nair for him whilst putting Rahane at 3, it's not needed. There has long been a discussion of dropping Pujara since the start of the county season. Even so, conditions for batting were very difficult in May and June, being cold in May batsmen struggled, not just Pujara. In SA, he looked in good nick but his running was horrendous. #5 is too low for Pujara, who has been used to play at #3. No need for chopping in the batting order, unless there's a change of openers.

It's not so easy to drop Pandya. A seam bowling allrounder is valuable in England. Only problem is he isn't good enough to be the 5th bowler. But since the Test series starts in August with dry, hot conditions, Ashwin should play ahead of him.

Hard to disagree with that. Bhuvi would've been a HUGE difference in terms of adding at 30-40 runs to the team's total. And add to that England is a place that suits his bowling. Big loss for India.

In fairness you cannot speak for everybody, sometimes it’s easier to get your information all in one place: PlanetCricket :)
Of course Zim, PlanetCricket is an excellent site... we have great and respectful people here who actually have meaningful debates and we get instant reactions from users to every wicket, boundary and sixes! :yes :cheers

Agree, Ashwin has to play. He will even get handy runs down the order and it's important as we are missing Bhuvi. Hardik's bowling is not test standard but he batted well yesterday even if the bowlers were not mainstream international bowlers. So, they will be tempted to play him. And I feel Kohli won't drop Dhawan for Rahul.

As abhi_jacko mentioned, fit and form Shami is lethal. I would give a go for Shami too but not in place of in form Umesh and Ishant. Maybe one of the two spinner has to make way for Shami and it's very difficult to choose.

This is a very important point actually. I would rather have a player at no.3 who can grind out 50-100 deliveries consistently even if scoring at a SR of 30, than have a stroke maker. Seeing out the new ball attack from England is going to be the key to our success. This is why Vijay and Pujara are critical for this line up. And Rahul would be a great addition as an opener, but as everyone has mentioned, they will end up going for Dhawan.

That is the actual role of any number 3 and it has been for so many years till Kohli the captain started talking about intent and BS and we lost Pujara the grinder!

I think let Pujara play at least 3 tests. If he doesn't make at least two fifties or soaks at least 70 to 100 balls in two or three innings then we need to replace him! But the problem is Rahane has not played at 3 and Kohli is too vulnerable with the ball swinging. So we don't really have a replacement. Unless we bat KL Rahul/ Dhawan at 3 and the other batsman will open (Dhawan should not open cause he will edgeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee............ it!!!!!!!!)

Rahane can bat at 3. He can negotiate the new ball when he is in good form, which he isn't lately.
