India's Tour Of Sri Lanka Jul-Aug 2012

The article makes it very clear that the doosra and the carrom ball are not the same thing. Ashwin claims to have developed the latter and to be working on the former. Personally I think we could benefit from having a better name for the "carrom ball", and I would also prefer it not to be 'teesra'. Perhaps a Sri Lankan word this time (in honour of Mendis).

Carrom ball is when bowlers bowls with the flicking of the thumb and the bent middle finger as stated in the article and doosra is without the flicking of the thumb and the bent middle finger.

The only difference is that carrom ball bounces much more then the doosra.

Here is a link I found of Ashwin's carrom ball:

Atleast SriLanka have been in the groove as they have played matches offlate....but I wonder the form of our boys....:( though we can say Indian team will be a fresh team when they take the field....hopefully they are refreshed and not rusted as they have been fooling around with some 'waaku doki' moments....:p

Ha ha ha !
Waku-doki...:p

As history has it, whenever we have been out of touch for a long time,we have always been rusty. MSDs's claim of knowing the SL conditions well and all can be seriosuly put to the test here. SL,coming off a strong series against Pakistan, will be looking forth to thumping the Boys in Blue.

And for a change, I am eagelry looking forth to this series. Probably cauze it a break from the usual tradition of playing them every fortnight. :D

If you have played the board game of carrom, it is the same but with a cricket ball. The doosra is the ball that comes out the back of the hand and spins the other way to the offspinner

Despite popular belief Ashwin hasnt proved himself at the international level as yet, hopefully we get a good look at him for this series. The SL side have some excellent players of spin bowling so it should be a good test for him in what may most likely be spinner friendly conditions.

Why isnt Harbhajan not playing?

Faking an abdominal injury, yeah, don't need him.

Ashwin is almost playing in his home ground- we cannot expect huge crowds to make the things look like we are away, and the conditions to be absolutely similar to that of Chennai. Ashwin will have a key role to play, I predict that he will be included in all 6 matches.

My XI will be:

Virender Sehwag
Gautam Gambhir
Virat Kohli
Rohit Sharma
Suresh Raina
MS Dhoni
Irfan Pathan
Ravichandran Ashwin
Zaheer Khan
Umesh Yadav
Ashoke Dinda/Pragyan Ojha

We have over the recent past had an aversion to left-arm spinners, especially in ODIs. Pragyan will be a better bet here. The poor chap has not even played since donkeys months. Ashwin, as an all-rounder does score enough brownie points to warrant a place in the XI, howeer, with the inclusion of Irfan, we can totally rule out that angle.

Inclusion of Irfan might affect the chances of Ojha playing, but nothing will affect the chances of Ashwin playing because he plays for CSK, under Dhoni. So definitely, he will be more believed than anyone else. And also, as mentioned earlier, the tracks and atmosphere will be almost same, which will give his selection a 90% assurance.

If some batsman would have been picked in place of Rahul Sharma, it'd have looked perfect because I don't see Rahul getting a game anywhere.

I'd go with 2 spinners tbh, 4 seamers is overdoing it a bit.

Ashwin will continue to be castigated and his every non-performance will be scrutinised hard because he is a CSK player. Its been the fashion these days. Ojha has never been an attacking bowler from what I've seen him. In T20's, he picks wickets because the batsmen have to attack him and they perish in the process. And this is only in IPL. In international cricket, Ojha hasn't been a big success because intl batsmen play him better than in IPL.

Absolutely. 4 seamers in Sri Lankan conditions is overkill. We are not playing in Australia or South Africa.

One thing: I didn't use CSK term for what you thought (:p), I was like Dhoni's belief on Ashwin will be greater than anyone else. And I never criticize Ashwin, he is someone who belongs to the international cricket.

Yes, Dinda will be benched. I kept him as an option, there are few grounds at Sri Lanka (like Galle) where pacers get fair amount of advantage as the breeze enters the ground (especially the ones located at the sea shore). In those venues, going with 4 pacers is fair enough IMO.

First up, yes- because the captain has been defending the wrong players. A Jadeja still finds solace in the team. When you have an in-form Manoj Tiwary, he still does not get a game due to Raina's presence in the side.

Ojha has not gotten a game since long. In fact, I really dont recall the last time Prgayan played for India in an ODI. As for the claim of international batsmen playing him better- dont see it- he hasnt gotten many games.

For his IPL performance, he has been amongst the leading Indian spinners to have taken wickets in the IPL. Even though ,it should not be considered as a criterion for selection to the Indian XI.

Frankly, there is no need to take a squad of 15 to the island. Take 12 players, if need be fly in one out of Bangalore. It hardly takes 3.5 hours to reach Colombo.

That's the selectors fault for not picking him.
