Auckland v England XI - 3 day match - at Eden Park, Auckland - 1991/2

Pitch:
79 - A pitch prepared with the batsmen in mind.
Likely to play easily after a bit of early pace, but the intensive preparation that has gone into this pitch could cause it to begin to break up on the final day.

Day 1 Starting Pitch: 7A - Fast Paced Wicket

Day 1 Weather: 1 - Hot and Humid (bonus to Swing deliveries)

Toss: Auckland

Not wanting to bat last on a wicket which may break up on Day 3 Auckland batted first after winning the Toss but were bundled out in Humid conditions for 158 before Tea on Day 1 to hand the England XI the advantage.
Allrounder Steve Brown offered the main resistance for the home side as Glamorgan seamer Steve Watkin took 5 wickets.
Angus Fraser also bowled well to take 3-40 as he replaced the injured Devon Malcolm while allrounder Chris Lewis snapped up the other 2.
With conditions aiding Swing the home side now need some early wickets to get back in the game.

Watkin getting harder and harder to not pick for the first test.
The conditions in New Zealand probably suit Watkin, the pitches are often Green on Day 1 and the ball Swings.
His only weakness is he bowls a few too many loose balls.

Auckland v England XI - 3 day match - at Eden Park, Auckland - 1991/2

Brilliant bowling by Fast Medium bowler Danny Morrison kept Auckland in the game as the England XI were kept to a lead of just 30.
Morrison took 7-58 and received good support from the accurate Willy Watson as the ball continued to Swing in the Humid conditions.
Mike Atherton and Robin Smith were the best of the England XI batsmen.

Auckland v England XI - 3 day match - at Eden Park, Auckland - 1991/2

Solid batting by Auckland took them to 236/4 in their 2nd innings before a declaration at Lunch on Day 3 made a game of it.
The innings featured half centuries to John Wright and Jeff Crowe before the England XI were set a target of 207 to win in a minimum of 58 overs.
With the pitch still a Good Batting Wicket it seems a gettable target should the weather hold but the Humid conditions will keep the Auckland seamers in the game.

New Zealand Emerging Players XI v England XI - 3 day match - at Hamilton - 1991/2

Pitch:
An underprepared wicket, not the best advertisement for the groundsman's skills.
There are patches of green at both endsaround a length, and batting is likely to be difficult against the quickies on the first day.
After the spite wears off there will be runs to be had, but by day 3 the spinners should come into their own and this could be a match dominated by the bowlers.

Day 1 Starting Pitch: 6 - Green Wicket

Day 1 Weather: 8 - Overcast

Sent in on a Green Wicket in Overcast conditions the New Zealand Emerging Players XI made a decent fist of it between breaks for bad light and rain.
Young opener Blair Pocock went close to his 2nd hundred against the England XI before being out for 93 in 3 and a half hours of solid batting.
The home side were wary of a 2nd innings collapse so prolonged their innings until after Lunch on Day 2, eventually being bowled out for 276.
Left arm spinner Richard Illingworth bowled well for the visitors to take 4-50 at under 2 an over and Devon Malcolm and Martin Bicknell also looked good with 2 wickets each.

Fast Medium bowler Mike Pawson was the pick of the home side's attack with 2 wickets.

New Zealand U-Bix XI v England XI - 3 day match - at Dunedin - 1991/2

Pitch:
54 - Rather green looking and the seamers should be assisted until the wicket dries out.
Should play easily in the middle days of the match but there could be help for the spinners on the final day.

Day 1 Starting Pitch: Green Wicket

Day 1 Weather: Cloudy, some sunny intervals

A dominant unbeaten 170* to Graham Gooch was the highlight of an England XI 1st innings total of 280/4 declared at Dunedin.
Derek Pringle also made an unbeaten half century before the declaration late on Day 1.

New Zealand U-Bix XI v England XI - 3 day match - at Dunedin - 1991/2

The openers put on 146 with Trevor Franklin making 75 and Kyle Welleans making an unbeaten century before a declaration 68 runs behind on 1st innings late on Day 2.
The pitch remains Good For Batting and will be no worse than Normal on the final day so a run chase was thought the only way to get a positive result.
The England XI attack bowled poorly but a flat pitch didn't help them as only Medium pacer Derek Pringle's Swing troubled the batsmen.

New Zealand U-Bix XI v England XI - 3 day match - at Dunedin - 1991/2

Half centuries to Mark Ramprakash and Neil Fairbrother set up a declaration to set the home side a target of 202 off roughly 50 overs.
Alec Stewart and Matthew Maynard both fell cheaply for the 2nd time in the match but after 4 three day games every England top order batsman has had at least one good outing.
The England XI bowlers will now be hoping for a better performance than the first innings on a pitch that has eased to Normal.
