New Zealand in England May - June 2013

NZ certainly have the capability to collapse at some point in this game, but when I loaded up the sky stream and saw NZ batting first I didn't even consider we had won the toss until someone mentioned it!

Pre-purchase tickets, otherwise they rip you off hard at the gate (apparently it's like $45 or $20 for just the last session). If you buy in advance it's only $22 for us students plus a transaction fee. I don't have uni on Friday so I could've headed down today myself (since everyone else does or has work etc), but I'll be going tomorrow and Sunday so I didn't bother.

I'm definitely looking forward to tomorrow, and there should be a pretty good crowd there.

Thinking about going tomorrow and taking some law readings lol

Good day for NZ. Worst ever decision by England to make the NZers bat first. Fulton has really impressed after his selection and I really like him as an opening batsman. Very high potential, very less used.

Richardson was saying that McCullum might have been playing mind games before the game by repeatedly saying that he would choose to bowl first if he won the toss which made Cook put them in to bat lol

That's more like it take advantage of being a uni student!

Rutherford looks like he will be handy in India going by the ease he is playing the spinners even though it is only against these minnows.

These minnows who beat India in India rather than got whitewashed you mean? Talk me through 153/7.
I'm fed up with this series; it's also making me worry that one of the bowlers will get injured and be out the Ashes.

Last time we drew a series 0-0, anyone?

----------

He is out.

He just hit a four.

Pathetic pitch again. I can see us losing this.

I wouldn't say it's normal for pitches to be this batter friendly here, normally conditions are like England if anything but this season has been different... lots of runs all around the country.

What made the ODI pitch different in Auckland? England bowled well there, and it did a bit... hmm.

Wahey.

Nice delivery from Jimmy that. England need a massive collapse here though.

Can't help but feel a good deck like this with the sun out might get a bit up and down by days 4/5. Just can't believe England didn't bat first.

----------

Oh, and bit harsh for everyone to slate the wickets. As was pointed out, without rain, both the first two tests would probably have produced a result, and at least edges will carry.

Fair play to Monty. He has actually bowled ok this morning. Mixed up his pace a little bit more and earned his wicket nicely.

Last time we drew a series 0-0, anyone?

The only/;ast one I could think of, for England, was against Zimbabwe and in fact when I checked that is England's last 0-0.

Before that was New Zealand away in 87/88 which was our last 0-0 in a three Test series, Zimbabwe being only two. New Zealand last drew 0-0 in 08/09 against West Indies, that a two Test series.

England haven't really pulled it back much, makes me laugh the BBC describing Finn as "shining" which makes it sound like he ripped through the kwikfit batsmen. Key day tomorrow, England need to get to 300+ or they could be in trouble, the decision to bowl looking dafter day by day. I think England can write off much chance of a win, not without Pietersen and on this pitch, unless Bell decides to weigh in with a biggy and cement his place for the next decade.

You could say England errors have blown any chance of the series, batting errors in the 1st Test although we may not have won that Test anyway, and choosing to bowl when you should bat 99% of the time on tour. If England captains think bowling is the "safe" option they are badly mistaken

I think england are in a bit of trouble here, compton has been pretty good this series but with pietersen injured and cook and trott already out england's batting is looking a bit threadbare. they're batting too slowly again which always seems to end up causing them problems. NZ aren't a brilliant side but they've caused problems for a number of teams recently and aren't pushovers.

They are indeed. Root hasn't looked test standard yet and Bairstow hasn't batted for a while. Will be interesting though to see how they react. Bell needs to bat like the senior batsman he should be by now. As for Cook, this really has been a shockingly bad series in every sense. Hopefully he'll put it right come the summer.

Yeah, our two best batsmen already being out is worrying. Plus we're relying on Compton getting a 3rd century in a row, which is asking a lot. Bell really needs to live up to his hype here, with Bairstow and Root also needing to show what they can do. If we can get within 100 at the very least, we're still in this I think.

Fully agree. I think England are due a big performance. By which I mean if there's enough time I think they could chase anything up to 350 for victory...they could of course lose this test comfortably mind.

Awful pitch, 4 slips and a 2 gullies, must be a real road out there

:p
