New Zealand in England May - June 2013

That innings from McCullum is why I have always said over the last several years that he should be batting down the order in ODIs. I know his average is better opening, but that's just a reflection of how he's become a better player over time. When he bats at 5/6 he's a genuine match winner when we're chasing, because his ability to pace an innings is world class like we also saw in the T20I that we won.

It's so refreshing to have the Sky commentators at the ground and mingling with the New Zealand representatives. The India tour got a bit stale with all the Sky guys stuck in a studio in London commentating from a screen.

England in a decent position to win this one thanks to Anderson's 5wi and a good platform from Cook and Bell. My only worry is the ability of Trott to push his innings on, Root looks to have settled well but 105 from 15 overs is quite a pace to sustain.

We've seen this lower order collapse, not sure why England think this is a good balanced side, after Morgan and Buttler we're down to five bowlers who can bat and ODI records which are nothing special and certainly do not equate to their current positions in the order.

Woakes : HS 33no. 89 runs in 7 ODI innings, ave 22.25 thanks to 3/7 not out
Broad : HS 45no. 416 runs in 51 ODI innings, ave 12.24 thanks to 17/51 not out
Swann : HS 34. 484 runs in 46 ODI innings, ave 14.24 thanks to 12/46 not out
Finn : HS 35. 80 runs in 12 ODI innings, ave 13.33 thanks to 6/12 not out
Anderson : HS 20no. 204 runs in 66 ODI innings, ave 6.58 thanks to 35/66 not out

Boosted averages thanks to not outs, although I still maintain Swann has enough about him to be higher than he is batting. Most worrying is their aggregate 1273 runs at a paltry runs per innings of 6.99 between them. Woakes, Broad and Swann may be capable of scoring runs in Tests, quick cameos or scores when the game is up, but that is a weak lower order. I trust Woakes isn't England's 'answer' to the number seven spot, he'd make a decent number nine, eight maybe even, but he and Broad are no number sevens.

Joe Root officially becomes the first player ever to pass over 30 in his first 6 innings in ODI cricket. Special talent.

A brilliant innings from Joe Root! :) And a fantastic run chase by England.

Good innings, well paced and just when needed. Wouldn't have been clever to lose from such a strong position.

Got to love the way Root bats. Really busy at the crease, can score all round the ground, and for a small lad, he doesn't half time the ball. Some of his drives and pulls were absolutely rocketing off his bat. Got a couple of lives, but otherwise a very intelligently constructed innings. Looks the real deal, and hopefully he'll carry on cementing his place.

Fairly comfortable win for England allround. Jimmy the clear difference with the ball and every batsman getting in.

Really liking the look of this England XI barring of course the #7 slot, with the Champions Trophy in mind:

Cook
Pietersen
Bell/Trott
Root (6)
Morgan
Buttler
Woakes/Wright/Stokes (5)
Swann (4)
Broad (2)
Anderson (1)
Finn (3)

Top six a real dilemma for the selectors. Could so easily be Bell, Trott and Root starting with Morgan out; or Bell, Trott and Morgan starting with Root out; or the XI I have mentioned above. Interesting times ahead.

Do you guys get any of the New Zealand commentators, or do they just use the English ones for your coverage? Like do you ever get Doull/Smith etc. popping into your box?

I'm really not sure on bringing Rutherford in. Sure he did good in the T20Is, but a 50 over domestic average of 14 shows that he has no idea how to build a 50 over innings. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh because Anderson and Finn did bowl well, but Rutherford and Watling were just poor. You've got to be able to create stuff against good length bowling when you're opening the batting, and neither of them could. You just can't block out 20ish balls and then get out, because then the new batsmen coming out also need to get set, and you get a situation like we had yesterday. I'd just be telling Rutherford to go out and have a slog in the third ODI. If it doesn't work then Williamson can just come out because he is much more likely to go on after wasting those 20ish balls to get set.

We do get the New Zealand commentators, yes. I can't remember which ones off the top of my head but we certain get Doull. The graphics we see on screen are also the Sky Sport NZ ones.

We get your ones as well, like Botham, Knight, Lloyd, and Allot, so it seems a bit strange having two different commentaries since they're just jumping between boxes. I guess both counties want it like 75 - 25 in their favour, at least that's probably the NZ - Eng ratio for us, and I assume your one would be about the same.

I like Nick Knight as a cricketer and an analyst, but he's an awful excuse for a commentator - extremely annoying to listen to. Pietersen was right.

Heard commentators debating over whether it'll be compton or root in the test side. surely it'll be both, with compton opening and bairstow missing out. i think the biggest selection dilemma is what they do about the third seamer. I hope they go for onions ahead of broad. but they won't as they're worried about a long tail.

Well with the one day nonsense out the way the real cricket can begin. Obviously NZ are expected to go down 3-0 but it's always been a tough series in recent years and weather can play a part as well. I'd prob go with 2-0 with NZ having periods on top but never being able to sustain it.
