New Zealand in England May - June 2013

This was such a joke - Fans evicted for paper darts - Sport - NZ Herald News

I was sitting in the east stand/terraces (traditionally the cheap rowdy area) where most of this happened, and some of the security guards are total douchebags. We had a beach ball going around the stand and it kind of hit one of the security guards so he took it and put it over the boards at the front of the stand. Next over Southee who was fielding on the boundary at point/square leg reaches over the boardings and chucks the ball back into the crowd, what a legend, and needless to say there was a lot of cheering that proceeded that. A few overs later a security lady comes along and just takes it away, what a bitch. People getting kicked out for trying to start Mexican Waves is beyond ridiculous. They only start when the game starts to get boring, and what do they expect when our batsmen perform like they did.

Just something I noticed was how sour the England players were compared to the New Zealanders fielding on the boundary. Maybe it was just because we were getting wasted, but the likes of Taylor, Elliott, and Southee were all happy to interact with the crowd and sign autographs etc, while Root, Bairstow etc all just stood their ignoring the English fans chanting like Yorkshire etc. I'm not sure if it was just because they were told not to interact with the crowd or something, but some of them just came across as real tosses.

Or, being young players, they're trying as hard as possible to take it all as seriously as possible? Most players don't even hear the crowd, it's just background nice they ignore.

----------

The security guards are tossers though. On the one hand cricket is fighting dwindling viewing figures, and knobs like that don't help.

They're from Yorkshire, they're like that there. ;)

England should be winning this 3-0, barring the weather causing too much time to be lost of course. I think NZ could get on top, but we should have enough to see them off over the 5 days. I mean, I can't see them knocking us over cheaply twice in one match for example. Especially when Anderson should be in his element with the ball, to keep their scores down.

lol typical Kiwis doing some bat ---- crazy things to provide some entertainment. Someone should tell them its not rugby where they allows a couch next to the field. Cricket is too stuck up of a game for students to have fun.

The thing is that everyone knows that the east stand/terraces is where everyone goes for a good time, no one sits there if they want to watch the game in silence. At the end of the game the police/security there probably totals the other three stands combined. Tbh the people getting kicked out for throwing stuff provided some good entertainment, because the whole stand just started chanting "You tweaked up" when it happened. It's just stupid though, like beach balls going around the crowd happen in Aussie as well, and it's impossible for anyone to get hurt for one. Mexican waves happen all around the world, so it's like a 1% of socially retarded people that the security are trying to cater who should just stay at home and watch the game if they don't want to get disturbed.

That performance should all but certainly rule out any hopes of an Onions comeback into the national side's playing xi. First defeat for England in a practice match since 2006.

Not a great effort.

I notice Swann is batting below Woakes and Broad, Swann making 68 runs for once out whereas Woakes and Broad made 49 runs between them. Of course the main batting problem is when Compton, Trott and Pietersen make 65 runs between them across two innings, 81/3 and 67/4 (with Cook out cheaply 2nd innings) doesn't get you off to a good start and leaves you on the back foot.

Had England not declared they would probably have drawn, but they should have been able to bowl out a warm up kiwi opponent needing over 300 to win batting last. Onions could be on his last tour, injuries and performances like this perhaps will make the selectors look at different and/or younger options. Still not sure about Woakes, England have Broad, Swann and Bresnan in the mix already, whether they'll bat Woakes too high or he is necessary at all is a question I'd ask. Assuming Anderson is the lead bowler, Onions or Broad being in the side are we going to try five bowlers :noway again? Are they trying to make him into the number seven/all-rounder England don't have? Square pegs time like in ODIs?

For a while now I have been worried about England's back up bowlers, behind Finn and Anderson. I think Broad should have been dropped from the squad a few months back, Woakes hasn't got what it takes yet to be part of a four man test attack, and Onions has had an absolute stinker. I'm surprised by Onions as I would have had him in for the first test ahead of Broad for his performances during the English summer for Durham. However, perhaps all of the injuries have had a lasting effect.

As for Swann, I am starting to get a little worried that he is on the down slope towards the end of his career. I have defended him for a few months, believing that he was just rusty from lack of cricket. But I think we need to start seriously considering other options when it comes to spin. Monty isn't young either. Simon Kerrigan seems to be the only bowler that can leave his head held high on return from the lions tour of Australia.

What really worries me is the lack of class in the England lions squad. Coles, Meaker, Dernbach, Wright ect... look fairly average to me when it comes to 4 day cricket. I hope the Topley gets fast tracked into the squad reasonably soon, as I think he could be up there with the best in a few years. Although, given what the Aussies have done to their best young quicks by playing them too early, perhaps that's not the best idea.

Nah the back-up for behind Anderson & Finn is fine. Broad & Bresnan has been poor for a while now. Bresnan has been axed & Braod is still being picked on sentiment.

But Meaker is big talent, ENG wasted some good opportunities during the ODIs & T20s vs IND & NZ not to give him more game time. Plus Onions is solid in the right conditions, Boyd Rankin is around & of course Tremlett once fit will always be in the reckoning.

Plus also i don't think we should place too much emphasis on this warm up defeat. Essentially it was just that - a warm up. The team just won in India.

Unless ENG bowling collapses in first test vs NZ - only then should alarm bells start ringing.

Boyd rankin is terrible. I'm sad he has left Ireland in a hole as he really could have offered them something. As for Chris tremlett, i said he'd never play again after the injury first appeared and i stick to that now.

If you look at australia's young second string bowlers, they look a lot more impressive than ours. I hope meaker does have what it takes, but having seen him down at the oval regularly, i doubt he has.

I'm not just worried because of the warm up, because i know our best two bowlers will come back in and we will win. but it seems that whenever we give anyone else a try in the lions or full side they mess it up.

the english players for the most part were getting mobbed by the east stand as you'd expect ofcourse, so its understandable that they weren't happy fielding at square leg/point.

England news : Onions' lack of form worrying for England | Cricket Features | Global | ESPN Cricinfo

You know what mr big red, reading that cricinfo article and thinking about what you said, on second thought they probably is a problem with the bowling attack depth.

Plus yea AUS pace bowling stocks have been very good for a while. Only South Africa is comparable.

This is only good thing about AUS these days, too bad the dumb selectors they have don't know how to utilize it.

However its a bit harsh to say Rankin is trash. Based on what i've seen of him for Ireland & in county cricket, i certainly think he could be a useful test bowler for England in certain conditions if ever given a chance.

It was only the English fans that were chanting their counties etc though... I was waiting for the "Root is a ------" chant to start up, but it never did.

Does anyone know what stand the Barmy Army will be sitting in at the Eden Park test?

The NZ Selection beating England is pretty funny as well.

So what team do you reckon cook will go for? i think the obvious route is the one he'll go dow, with compo opening, root at 6 and unfortunately broad at 8.
