Pakistan Tour of Australia 2009/10

Better than Sunny saying:

"Goood shot!"

When even a better shot is played he says:

"Goooooooooooooooooood shot!"

or sometimes:

"G'd shot!" with a sudden pause.

Not really, I'd rather have that than pseudo-Santa.

McKay needs to get the boot, a bit useless in the team. I would like to get some youngsters in the team, like the "wicked 3" of Pattison-Hazelwood-Starc :p

We've already tried about 17 different bowlers in the last year, lets give the chap some time. OK maybe a slight exaggeration (it's only been 15!), but here's the list of pace bowlers Australia has played in ODIs in the last 12 months:
Dirk Nannes
Ryan Harris
Brett Geeves
Shane Harwood
Stuart Clark
Ben Laughlin
Shaun Tait
Ben Hilfenhaus
Brett Lee
Nathan Bracken
James Hopes (playing at #8, I'd count him a specialist bowler)

And our current gang:
Clint McKay
Doug Bollinger
Peter Siddle
Mitchell Johnson

There's probably guys who've been named in the squads too, but never got a game: Burt Cockley being one.

And as for picking young guys, that will be a good strategy after the 2011 World Cup. Unless you think they will be excellent international bowlers in a years time, they should be avoided.

We need to stop picking guys because of their FC experience or performances.

What did McGrath do in FC before he was picked?

Tum you obviously werent around back in 93 when McGrath came into the team, different team different circumstances. We had a real shortage of quality bowlers back then, and had some dreadful failures in the years preceeding. McGrath was literally the ONLY young quick worth giving a go to. Fleming would be around soon, so to Reiffel ( who had a stellar 93 ashes but was injury prone), McDermott was about to hit some form ( also injury prone), but in state cricket it was pretty bare. Julian, Angel, Reid, Alderman, P Taylor, C Matthews, G Matthews, Dodemaide, Lawson, Merv Hughes had all either been tried or were almost at the end of their career at international level. McGrath stood out like a sore thumb with his teriffic bowling in key matches including the 92/93 shield final where really caused the batsmen trouble, including a young Hayden and Law, we were struggling to keep McDermott on the park ( like Lee now), Merv was just about finished, we had to punt on someone.

Go stick that up your harmonica Cameron White nay sayers! What a champion, what a knock!

And a pretty good game.

Well at least pick bowlers that get some movement with the ball.

Surely everybody knew in FC level that both Siddle and McKay bowl dead straight?

I hear ya man. The difference in our new ball work compared to the Pakistani's has been blatant. Last night and in the Tests. Even Roach and Rampaul had the ball working much more than Bollinger and Siddle.

Makes Hilfenhaus and Lee more valuable and it makes Troy Cooley look like a bit of a loser. Siddle has potential to be a good bowler, as does Johnson but neither of them can swing the ball if their life depended on it. Any swing and those 2 would be awesome bowlers. As it is, they are STILL quite acceptable-to-good.

Then again, Australia hasn't really produced many decent swing bowlers. Terry Alderman, Damien Fleming and Hilfenhaus (possibly). McDermott could swing it with the new ball as could Lee and Kasprowicz. But the other big name bowlers weren't really swing bowlers, they were hit and deck and get seam movement bowlers: Merv, Paul Reiffel, Jason Gillespie, Glenn McGrath, Stuart Clark and now Mitchell Johnson. None of those guys could swing it much.

To be honest I'd prefer guys who can get wickets without assistance from the ball/atmosphere because that is what happens in Australia - conditions are tough. But it means that having a swing bowler to use of any type will be very valuable for variety and to let us attack with a new ball. And if we can't get wickets with the new ball, we at least need to keep it tight. THAT is where Siddle and Bollinger look like failing to me. Hit the right areas, keep it tight and hope for some movement. Neither of them are great at that task at present IMO.

Siddle has NEVER got the ball to do anything, even if he did well against SA, I was very surprised to see him picked ICC young cricketer of the year.

Johnson can produce "unplayable" spells and Bollinger gets good swing with the new ball.

McKay has always been line and length with that extra bounce which he showed at times during the match.

Siddle is all about seam movement, isn't doing it atm but during his purple patch that was how he got all those wickets. Bollinger was a bit loose with the new ball but that is what happens when you try to swing it. He came back well something which Hilfy struggled to do.

The only good performance he made was those 5 wickets on debut against SA in Sydeny. Couple of good balls in it but most of those were tail-enders that played all around the straight deliveries.

I loved Siddle because he could get the crowd involved and intimidate like Merv, but he isn't doing that anymore :(

Is Hilfy injured or is he dropped?

Injured but I wouldn't have him anywhere near the ODI side. Like Siddle he needs to work on his OD game.

His 4 fer in the Boxing Day Test against SA was the best I've seen him bowl. He bowled consistently in the 150s, got swing, seam movement and bounce. 2nd Test: Australia v South Africa at Melbourne, Dec 26-30, 2008 | Cricket Scorecard | Cricinfo.com
