Pro Evolution 2008!

Well obviously it needs to progress, but not to the same degree FIFA does

Looks like someone made a mix up at the printers! :p

PES has been renowned for its realism, now people are saying FIFA is the more realistic.

FIFA has been renowned for its arcadey style of play, now people are saying PES has an arcadey feel!

I'll have to make up my mind when play the PES demo. Although, in recent years I have played the PES demo, being impressed, bought the game and found it to be five times better.

But this year, things are all over the place :S

Fair enough but sticking to a tweaked PES6 seems the smarter idea, adding a few things and sorting a few bugs isn't enough frankley speaking, I really expected more after hearing KONAMI saying how this might be the greatest football game ever.....not.

As I said it'll be a fun game multiplayer or whatever but it's another lazy effort and a few tweaks won't make it a great game unfortunantly, I reckon this will be a good buy for PC though seeing as theres no other football game on current-gen worth playing...

Farout no ones talkin about PES08 here! BUMPAGE!

The games out in parts of Europe and things aren't looking all that good for us PS2 users - read this post from Evo Web:

First of all:excuse my spelling. I'm Dutch, i'm tired, and I did not have a single cup of coffee yet.

I've had a good solid 8 hours of gameplay (prof. level) in my system so here goes:

After popping it in the old ps2 the first thing you see is, ofcourse, the 'arty-farty' intro. Me, being 31, am more of a 'give me some nice shots of some good footy action' man, but instead I see a man with orange bubbles for hair running around. 'To everyone his own' I think and click the 'X'.

First thing you notice is that they removed the menu list for a more stylish option. You see all the options one at a time, and you can scroll through down. You'll never need glasses again...

Then I went straight for an exhibition match:

Real Madrid vs Fiorentina (they put my team FC Groningen out of the UEFA so I had some hard feelings there)

You see the usual options, only now it's a blue-star world.

I make some changes in the line-up. Put Robben, the old one-baller who falls to the ground if you shake your set, up there and commence.

I watch the entrance seen with special interest to see... yeah... to see what? They changed absolutely nothing! You see the same stadium views, the same shots of the tunnel, players going up there, side-scrolling the line-ups, two players at the kick-off, zoom-out, that's a wrap, play.

Oke... a little dissapointing, but it's all about the gameplay, isnt it?

I kick the ball around the park and I feel right at home. The speed seems fine, the player tackle like i'm used to, the passing is oke...

Then it hits me. I've not seen anything NEW here what so ever! Not a single animation! Not a single handgesture, nothing. All the same shots are in there: the ref not giving a card, but a warning, you falling over when you mist a good change, the same reaction after a off-side goal, everything. Absolutely nothing new!

So, then I thought, well I go for a dive. That is something new! But guess what? It is not in the ps2 version! I checked the manual: nothing, checked the inplay commandlist: nothing. Tried all the r1, r2, l1, l2 combination out there , and all I got was ruud van nistelrooy going insane. But did he fall? Then again, Ruud is a standup guy... (If any of you did pull it off, then please correct me!)

What is different is the shooting. You know when the shooting in pes6 was changed and you had to press it very slightly in the box, otherwise it would cannonball over. We all had to get used to that didnt we? And there were a lot of angry people here. Well, they 'fixed' it... Now it's kinda random! Can't really explain it. Just play it and see what I mean.

The keepers are a whole different story. When you shoot from a distance the are well placed and seem to now what they are doing. Then, every so often, you see them become 'butterfingers' and it'll slip through their fingers and stumble in.

And on a long shot that hit the bar and the was going to the ground, i've seen van der Sar turning and diving, in a 45 angle, to the ball. He tipped in straight in. No attacker in sight.

But when it comes to scrimmages this game has it all. Because they made it so that not every high ball is automaticly for the keeper (you can give him a hard time) you see a lot of them.

It is also very difficult to take it past the goalkeeper when attacking. The keeper just waits and when you go for the fake-shot he dives and mostly gets the ball.

A good thing is that you can now take free-kicks that go into the box where you go and try to get a header on there. It actually worked a couple of times. Also, the lofted through balls seem to be more precise.

I did not notice anything of the new teamvision, but that could just be me.

When I turned the season to winter and the weather to snow, all I got was a nice orange ball, but no snowy park. Again, this could be me, missing a setting because of the tears in my eyes, but could also be a bug.

When I tried the training mode (all unaltered in any way), I noticed that the only thing they changed was that they removed the 'rest' option from the menu. So there is no chance to start from midfield, with full 'stamina', in mid-training. Why, o why, you ask yourself.

I will not even mention the master league or the editing etc. If you have pes6 you see what I see...

And I could go on and on, but I wont. I really need my coffee now.

Last thing:

THIS IS A VERY GOOD FOOTBALL GAME, but it's not a new version. It is really not. And then i'm only talking about the Playstation 2 version as that is the only version i've played (oke, and the 360 demo that did not impressed me very much).

After playing for a few more days, I will get used to the shooting and the keepers...

But a new game/version? No sir.

This is pes 6.2...

That ladies and gentleman is why everyone should own a next gen console.

Four days! OMFG!

Its what everyone has been waiting for! The review by the Pro Evo master...yours truly! ;)

I came home in excitement from work and immediately put the game on. I never usually watch the introduction movies to a game, but come on, its Pro Evo, you have to watch it the first time! The music sounded familiar, sounded like the Kaiser Chiefs but someone will have to clear that up for me when they hear it. Overall impressive introduction, very nicely done. So, onto the game play. I decided I wanted to have a test run first with a club team, so my dear Arsenal were the choice, and the opponents, Roy Keane's own; Sunderland.

The stadium selection looked quite like the Emirates, but I dont think it was, still, impressive. Its also dissapointing to see that only Newcastle seem to have their real name, although all teams do have real player names (i think) just fake team names, im not familiar with updates on the Xbox so not sure if the game can be patched up like it can with the PC to put some proper kits and team names in etc, but I guess the names can always be edited. So, onto the match. The passing and movement of the players was good, but I noticed the computer was quick to close you down. Impressed with the fact you can now actually use your players strength and momentum to barge another player off the ball, and it looks realistic too, which was very good to see.

Keano's men were holding out, I threw everything at them but to no avail. I must also point out that I am very impressed with the new shooting system, its so much better than the previous games where you could tap the shoot button and the ball would go into orbit, but, in this one you can really hammer the ball full whack and have it go on target, which I for one am relieved to see.

I eventually won the game 2-1, Rosicky scored a screamer and Van Persie grabbed the winner after Murphy equalised on the counter for them. It was nice to see that even Sunderland could cause problems and were not predictable at all, they attacked from all quarters using different flanks and players the majority of the times, and they were far from obvious. So far so good.

Impressed with the computer AI, I moved on to Xbox Live to see what the small number of people fortunate to have the game could offer. I made the fatal mistake of sticking my neck in straight at the deep end, playing a ranked match first up. Needless to say I was comfortably dispatched 6-0, the closest I got was a Van Persie free kick tipped over the bar by a diving Van der Saar. Understandably the game is very laggy, tackles dont always register straight away, and shots sometimes appear to have been saved but then you see the ball in the net. It is early days so hopefully this will be sorted once the game and network is in full flow.

Dissapointed with my first efforts, I decided to take a step down and just play a couple of unranked games. I played as Chelski and met a bloke playing as Madrid. The first game was pretty much one sided, I was eagar to get stuck in and his slick passing pretty much saw me off as he won 4-2. The rematch was a corker though, I was now feeling comfortable and playing some lovely football. 2-2 at the end of normal time, it was left to Fat Frank himself to score an absolute belter from 20 yards past Casillas to send me into raptures and give us the win. The decider as it was, was yet again one sided, just this time for me :) My talent was showing and I ran out 4-0 winners, chants of "Easy, Easy" could be heard from my bedroom, before I realised Eastenders was about to start and quickly changed channels ;)

Overall though, impressive, it is a step up from last year. Gameplay has been improved, I think we will all have a much tougher time getting to grips with the AI this season and the thrashings of yesteryear we could hand out to the comp may very well be a thing of the past. Im going to get stuck into the League action later, see how that goes, before eventually getting stuck in with the Master League boys.

Oh and an added bonus for those of you without Xbox Live Subscription, you get 48 hours free in the box! Just like you did with Halo 3!

My overall score: 8/10 - However, if it can be patched to bring the teams up to date etc, then that would go up to 9.5 because for me, its a pain editing it all single handedly!

BRIGGS DON'T TELL ME YOU'RE STRUGGLING :p If you can't get to grips with the A.I yet no-one has a chance.

I'm glad it's meeting expectations then. Roll on Christmas!!!

The A.I is much more complex, I only had to play the first 10 minutes of the game to notice that! Will take some adjusting to as im used to Pro Evo 6, but the change over wont take very long!

I'm off catching the bus into town to go and purchase it now. If it's sold out i'm bricking the windows...
