My mum is a book editor so we were never allowed to get away with the slightest grammatical inconsistency in our house. Oh the arguments over less and fewer and whether it's now okay to split infinitives.

Sometimes splitting them is necessary to avoid sounding like a twat.

The same goes for 'whom', which when used correctly often makes you sound like a dick.

I have gone off, on behalf of all of us, and compared the sound of a twat to the the sound being made by someone splitting infinitives.....I was shocked to indeed be able to make out the similarities.....
